Have you explored Go-Go yet? I fucking love it. Check out TroubleFunk, Rare Essence, and all that Chuck Brown shizznit. Come to DC, there are clubs that have kickass GoGo acts as house bands and play a few times a week.

there's a "Pure Funk" series with lots of hits (available on amazon) that is VERY well-compiled (Gap Band, Dazz Band, Rick James, this kind of thing)... and then if you wanna get deep, the Rhino Records Phat Trax series is unbelievable.

That first Pure Funk compilation might be more pop than nasty, but it's so damn exhilirating everybody should have it. It has killer sound. I've seen it in many a used bin. I was less than thrilled by Rhino's In Yo Face! History of Funk series. I found the sequencing and song selections a bit unimaginative.

Hang your heads in shame! Right up there with George Clinton and James Brown, but no one has mentioned the magnificent Dyke & The Blazers, maybe the funkiest band of all time! There's a good comp called Funky Broadway (actually there's more than one comp called that, but they're all great).

I cannot second this enough. When Lionel Ritchie held a sax, and the band was all over the moogs and bass, shit was the phonk!

A very easy primer on funk is to find those "Paul's Boutique's Crates" that people have made on slsk...which is ironic, because if you look closely at the cover of Paul's Boutique, you'll see that the store was actiually selling a Young Marble Ginats album. Well, that and Grover Washington Jr.'s Mr. Magic.
