Also notice it has a disco beat, which is very gay for an Eminem record...

But Eminem is such a great gay icon, so why not go disco?

It's not that safe is it?

"I know that you got a job Miss Cheney but you're husbands heart problem is complicated".

And I like the part that leads into the first chorus "get ready-cos this is about to get heavy-i just settled all my lawsuits FUCK YOU DEBBIE". Cheeky scamp.

I like it. Lots. Lack of controversy? I'm not sure. Pete's NYLPM review mentions Eminem likens himself to Elvis, but he didn't say exactly how Em articulates the parallels: he's the worst since the King to "do black music so selfishly and use it to get myself wealthy".

Is there a "Billie Jean" sample in there? Or is it just very very similar?

Ronan, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i quite like it,don't see the billie jean connection but it kind of reminds me of got your money...i didn't bother to read the article, but i know there was something about how the whole new album was being kept under wraps in the nme, more so than usual, yet it seems to be up on soulseek..has anyone got any of it? is it the real thing?

I dig the Malcolm Maclaren (sp.?) reference.

there's a bit in the video where Eminem is dressed as Osama in his cave and him and D12 do the running man

Did any other beat Eminem produced even come close to this one?

Evan R, Monday, 27 June 2016 18:54 (seven years ago) link

oh i think it's woeful. catchy though. uncomfortably catch.

i remember when it came out thinking "what the hell dr dre" - being under the assumption that he produced the majority of Eminem beats - but he had no involvement in the production, which seems obvious in retrospect

Well of course. He was dead, locked in Eminem's basement.

MarkoP, Monday, 27 June 2016 19:15 (seven years ago) link

I remember aged 13 writing all the lyrics to this (paraphrased from memory) in the goodbye card for the coolest girl in school and her absolute disgust on reading it, which in retrospect is obviously the only appropriate response.

All-time favorite song to do at karaoke.

This stretch of the video is the best part, see also Em dressed as Elvis having a bathroom heart attack

This was the best thing Eminem ever did.

^ man it's a good tune but I'll take "Bitch Please II", "Who Knew?", "Soldier", "Rock Bottom", "Brain Damage", "Kill You", "Just Don't Give a Fuck" over this one. was a good single and better than the rest of the way-too-serious album but this ain't even his fifth best single in my eyes.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 28 June 2016 02:09 (seven years ago) link

okay, but of singles that aren't even his fifth best single, it's really good

oculus lump (contenderizer), Tuesday, 28 June 2016 04:12 (seven years ago) link

it is a catchy song, and I did enjoy hearing it every day that summer on the radio, tis true. boy, though, did he pick on easy targets....
