yeah Marx's early rockers weren't bad at all. "Don't Mean Nothing" actually has Joe Walsh (which makes sense: it's a "Long Run" rewrite).

and it must be pointed out:

Not to mention his songwriting/production credits.

I dunno, seems p much straight ballad to me. I hear the Hysteria connection but I'd never go as far as hair metal.

Yeah, I guess the way the guitar sounds reminds me of Hysteria a bit. His voice kills any metal aspect. Hair Ballad.

A: So, this has nothing to do with your music, but I'm gonna ask you about it. Are you familiar with—there's a short film that your lovely wife, Donna, has been asked to be in that I have also been asked to be in. Are you familiar with this?

F: Sure. I told her never in a million years to even approach you because you would be uninterested, but it sounds like there's a possibility you could do it.

A: Well, what happened is—it's a short film about a Twitter beef between a writer and a musical celebrity, let's say a slightly passe musical celebrity along the lines of a Richard Marx.

A: When I read about that original Twitter beef, my initial reaction was that the writer guy, who was all incensed about how cheap Richard Marx was—my initial reaction was that that guy was a cock and a half, and I hoped that Richard Marx punched him square in the nose. He and a couple of other people from the show have a podcast, where it's more related to music. Anyway. They taped it at the Hideout, Chicago's friendliest tavern, and they had me and Richard Marx as guests. So I actually met Richard Marx.

F: And he wasn't a cock—he was a nice guy.

A: Well, you know, he seemed like he was a little out of touch and maybe a little full of his own dump. But I find it really hard to think ill of a guy who's self-aware enough to come down to a thing where he knows he might get picked on. I thought that was, relatively speaking, big of him.

i heard "endless summer nights" on a radio and god help me i liked it. i probably heard it back in the 1980s but don't remember if so.

the problem w/ the blogger discussed above is that he can't imagine a person who could make the sort of music marx makes (and continues to make) doing so in earnest. i see no reason to doubt marx's commitment to even the dreck-iest of his music.

meaning, i don't see evidence of bad faith on his part.

Anyway it made me go back and find some of the later-period albums I hadn't heard, like Flesh & Bone & that red Avalon one that I can't remember the name of and the most recent album and they're pretty good imo! Though I will admit to a deep abiding bias, lol.

It occurred to me that his catalog would hold up well against a listening thread if enough ppl were on board.

oh that would be fun. i legit loved 'hazard' when i was 9 or 10 and when i go back to those songs now they really are quite decent and defensible.

He was a guest recently on a podcast I listen to; he had some fairly interesting stuff to talk about, mainly his early days in the biz.

he was on Chelsea Peretti’s podcast randomly a number of years ago, and he was great - even when all of her caller/listeners had no idea who he was!

he was also on the low times podcast with tom scharpling a while back, he seems like a bro for sure
