LOL 5 minutes in it becomes clear the next room is blasting Beyonce

Adam Bruneau, Monday, 12 April 2010 01:05 (fourteen years ago) link

So awesome. At 9 minutes in Bashir reads an example of one of their 'romance' lyrics and starts laughing, and then everyone starts laughing, and he is told by a man wearing clown make up "See, you're laughing, how can you take this shit seriously?"

Adam Bruneau, Monday, 12 April 2010 01:10 (fourteen years ago) link

by mentioning that someone whose mainstream profile peaked in the 90s has enjoyed a devoted following since then i was in no way attributing that to "90s nostalgia" fwiw

fucka washa hat (some dude), Monday, 12 April 2010 01:10 (fourteen years ago) link

They are really pretty down to earth guys who just see their art in the same vein as the lowest-common-denominator entertainment they love (wrestling, horror movies, etc.).

Adam Bruneau, Monday, 12 April 2010 01:14 (fourteen years ago) link

"There are plenty of great, hidden, underlying messages that take years to decipher."

Adam Bruneau, Monday, 12 April 2010 01:20 (fourteen years ago) link

no that's right xp, and of course the nostalgia audience will often increase with time in any case, but the juggalo thing evidently both endures with older gens and speaks to kids with no cultural memory/assocations with that time

not sure i'd liken it to people following 311 or whatever, they may be as numerous but not as committed in most instances, and 311 is more anachronistically nineties whereas the juggalo thing sort of seems to exist outside of normal pop cultural time now?

nakhchivan, Monday, 12 April 2010 01:31 (fourteen years ago) link

oh god bashir is such a tool in this interview

GREAT JOB Mushroom head (gbx), Monday, 12 April 2010 01:34 (fourteen years ago) link

I see hatchetman stickers and ICP shirts on enough cars and people that I never really bat an eyelash, but the other day I saw a huge 311 sticker in the back window of a car and did a huge double take, like the fact that someone was still manufacturing giant window-size 311 stickers is just crazy. I didn't know they were still around.

it's true, 311 is bigger than ever. this is coming to my area soon:
Unity Tour 2010 / 311 & The Offspring with special guests Pepper
(excerpt from gig description: 311 are touring behind their 2009 studio release, Uplifter - the highest charting 311 album ever, debuting at #3. 311’s reputation as a renowned live band has grown steadily along with their catalog of modern rock hits – including ”Down,” “All Mixed Up,” “Amber,” “Come Original,” “Beautiful Disaster” and “Love Song.”)
also coming to my area:
Insane Clown Posse with Kottonmouth Kings, Coolio, Kittie, Necro plus Juggalo Clown Wrestling

The Offspring are currently in the studio working on the follow-up to their heralded Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace album, which featured the alternative and rock radio staples “Hammerhead” and “You¹re Gonna Go Far, Kid.” The band will take a break from the studio to hit the road and debut some new material along with their classic hits. The band are known best for their modern rock anthems including “Self Esteem,” “Come Out And Play (Keep ‘Em Separated)” and “The Kids Aren¹t Alright.”

Musical Style

Various writers and critics define 311 by a number of genres. They are generally known as an alternative rock band, but they are also classified as rap rock, rap metal, funk rock, funk metal, ska punk, reggae and jazz fusion.

ice cr?m, Monday, 12 April 2010 03:31 (fourteen years ago) link

amber is more black metal imo

ksh, Monday, 12 April 2010 03:32 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't really like to hate on bands, but 311's version of "Lovesong" killed a little part of me.

tylerw, Monday, 12 April 2010 03:33 (fourteen years ago) link

don't know if this has been noted but ;_;
"Over the past 30 years, ICP has released more than 23 albums, including more than 10 RIAA certifications and the Billboard Top 200’s longest running hip-hop record."

wasnt this the nature of many whiney arguments i.e. gucci mane, kevin smith, icp etc.

In the last month I ran into someone from the band B00gie Boarder rocking a FREE GUCCI shirt, and saw a house party in Austin where BL1SSED 0UT ran a gucci song through a distortion pedal as partnof his set, so continue to STFU deej

estela artois (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:31 (fourteen years ago) link

ayo whiney do you really consider all the lols "bashing"? ICP 1) know they're funny 2) are being funny on purpose - it's possible to say "this shit is hilarious" and still not be laughing meanspiritedly imo

like that bashir interview afaic dudes come off like enviably together ppl w/their priorities straight, and that's been the word on them for years - at instore signings, they hang around until the last fan's gotten his hand shaken even if it takes 8 hours etc - 100% sincerely think these guys are awesome, also think it's fair to laugh at guys IN CLOWN MAKEUP.

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:32 (fourteen years ago) link

guys who write songs like "I Stab People"

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I could kind of understand Whiney getting his panties in a bunch about some of the other ICP threads that turned into LOLz @ fatjuggalo.jpg for large stretches, but this one is straight up homage.

Fetchboy, Monday, 12 April 2010 06:36 (fourteen years ago) link

i guess its not the bashing its just the overarching vibe that we're definitely "looking down" on a subculture vastly inferior to ours.

I mean can i just

"I spun her around and licked her face/She screamed, hit me with a can of mace"

vs.

"I fell in love with the first cute girl that I met who could appreciate Georges Bataille/Standing at Swedish festival discussing "Story of the Eye"

estela artois (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:37 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not really trying to be capn save a clown and all, but i'm just kind of tired of hearing it from all angles. it's way bigger than just an ilx thread

estela artois (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:38 (fourteen years ago) link

violent j said something on stern like 10 years ago about why they couldn't understand why everyone hates them. they're not on the radio, they're not on MTV, they're not in your face like a backstreet boys or a britney or a beiber. they're a total underground thing that you can ignore like you would ignore a bright eyes album, and yet the internet is picking apart their every move like they're pearl jam.

i'm just pointing it out, i'm not gonna get all super-aggy about it

estela artois (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:44 (fourteen years ago) link

aggy everywhere in this bitch

deejus, get off the whiney weingarten penis, before i sb and bust (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:47 (fourteen years ago) link

anyway, what you say could apply to phish, and i think it's pretty reasonable to hate phish & it has nothing to do with classicism

deejus, get off the whiney weingarten penis, before i sb and bust (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:48 (fourteen years ago) link

or i guess, what violent j said

& people pick apart everything they do because they are transparently & inherently ridiculous

deejus, get off the whiney weingarten penis, before i sb and bust (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:48 (fourteen years ago) link

seriously ppl that whole bashir interview is genuinely inspiring to me. because it's the same situation as in dream deceivers, guys who make music for a niche audience and have a special bond w/that audience, being accused of wanting the hurt the people to whom they owe their careers, and getting a chance to say to clueless dudes "what we do is about love & family & if you can't understand that, that's on you"

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:49 (fourteen years ago) link

not that i don't think there's some element to truth about what you're saying re: "hipsters" or w/e, but it's not like their art isn't asking to be picked apart by internet culture -- i.e. there was no classicism i think in the "picking apart" and rofling at die antwoord -- it's just lol ridiculous rap

deejus, get off the whiney weingarten penis, before i sb and bust (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:54 (fourteen years ago) link

whiney i dont care about how connected you are to what hipsters think, you just have an unbelievably distorted view of the real world, worse than any 'hipsters' i know

my fukkin dad would make fun of these dudes if he saw them on nightline -- must be a hipster!!

The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Monday, 12 April 2010 06:54 (fourteen years ago) link

i think you a have a distorted idea of the argument i'm trying to make
