i use the word 'hipsters' beacuse there's currently not a better word to describe what was known as "alt-culture" in the 90s and "punk culture" in the 80s. you're the boner who wants to get all Merriam Webstar about it

in hug-it-out spirit, i'm gonna say that whenever you read the word "hipster" coming from one of my posts, just replace it with, "the wide spectrum of people currently into alternative culture that are both consuming and creating a huge part of the internet discourse we are currently involved in--including certain alt-weeklies, magazines, indie music review sites, music blogs and message board much like our beloved ilx"

i think to be a lil less personal in my annoyance & more fair to whiney, i do think that the constant focus on 'hipsters' does a really good job of obscuring actual existing communities that exist out there & reduces it all to an 'us' vs 'them' reductive mentality that gives one extremely vague subculture an overwhelming weight ... why when i said the sade single was dope on pfork did it become '''hipsters love sade now, huh''' instead of, this one dude likes sade? because it could just as easily have gone the other way, in some sense -- there are plenty of culturally-aware young ppl who uhh i dont know dig 'the wire' or post on williamsboard & dont like sade. & with music it gets super annoying because its like, if im identifying as a 'hipster' do i suddenly have an obligation to care about joanna newsome? or like, i dont know, animal collective? & its not about me saying "yo animal collective sucks!" its about the idea that i should feel obligated to enter into that discussion at all, when i (and im sure some people here) know plenty of cool, reasonably hip people who've never heard animal collective in their lives.

its like, either hipsters are one kind of person or they are multitudes, but a lot of times engaging w/ whiney about this stuff feels like hes trying to have his cake & eat it too

'have his cake and eat it too' meaning 'everyone is basically a hipster' while saying 'gucci is such hipster music' & meanwhile i know 0.0 'hipsters' who give a toss about the dude ... & of course there are some who do, because 'alt culture' covers this huge amount of ground. 'hipsters love making fun of icp' -- well duh, so do lots of people of all walks of life

not all icp zingers are hipsters, not all hipsters are icp zingers
