i'm loving umm hmm actually, tho all this talk about samples makes me feel a little guilty about it -gulp!-

forgotten funk-uncle (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:14 (fourteen years ago) link

someone please explain to me why it's okay for, say, every other R&B/soul singer under the sun to sing over samples but when Erykah Badu does it, ppl start rending their garments

HI DERE, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:15 (fourteen years ago) link

because the stuff without obvious samples feels so original and homemade i guess? tbh most modern R&B doesn't have a lot of samples anymore anyway, and when it does it's more like a 2 bar loop with hard drums, hip hop-style, than the kind of vamping she's doing, but yeah we might be getting into a silly double standard here.

the ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:25 (fourteen years ago) link

if anything "Get Munny" has to get past a wall of "this just reminds me of that Biggie song and you're not adding that much to it" resistance from me because of Ashanti type jacks.

the ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (some dude), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:26 (fourteen years ago) link

because people hold Erykah to a higher standard and regard her as an artiste? cause she seems like one of the few RnBers capable of--and willing to--creating something fresh and new?

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:32 (fourteen years ago) link

it's 2010 this argument is retarded i'm pretty sure the people who are bothered by badu's use of samples are aware of how silly they're being and will just will themselves into getting over it

tmi finney (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:35 (fourteen years ago) link

This self-integration into her own favorite tunes has been going on since the Live disc. Not sure why it would be treated as anything new here.

+ she sampled Wings and jacked David Sancious. Not exactly business as usual move.

yeah, "umm hmm" is great!

original bgm, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I gotta be honest though...this album is not quite as good as Mama's gun or 4WW...I love that it's funkier, but Out My Mind Just In Time clinches it... it kinda pales in comparison to Green Eyes...I still love you Erykah!!!

forgotten funk-uncle (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:26 (fourteen years ago) link

i never feel like listening to 'out my mind', it's nice but kinda boring. i'll give it some more shots but i was hoping for more since i've really liked what i've heard from georgia ann muldrow, beat-wise.

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:30 (fourteen years ago) link

So weird. It's one of the two tracks on the album I can't skip over when listening on random.

(The other being "Love," obv.)

i still like the album though...half awesome + half okay = very good. Just like everybody's been saying...

forgotten funk-uncle (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:38 (fourteen years ago) link

tell you what would be a great compilation - one of all the original songs badu's sampled

wow this album is a dissapointment. so half hearted. sounds like shes barely bothered. nice grooves but NO songs. not even the green eyes-ish closer is that good. this is like an album of outtakes. is she trying to get out of her contract or something? cos this seems like one of those albums.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 10:47 (fourteen years ago) link

theres some nice moments, some cool lines here and there, some nice melodies, but she sounds like she can barely be arsed to get through this.

Badu/N*E*R*D/Monae sounds like an awesome show, but no way I'm paying that much money.

jaymc, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 20:09 (fourteen years ago) link

No MTL, Toronto or any East Coast of Canada shows. New York or Boston are my best (not good at all) options.

I think "Turn Me Away" is so bubbly and happy that it will be one of those songs that can never NOT put me in a good mood.

and wait for the whingeing (too long/where's the review? etc)!

‘This Ain't A Love Song’? Too fucking right. You cunts couldn't write a love song. It's too serious for you.

what did bon jovi ever do to you?!

Greatest contributor: (history mayne), Monday, 10 May 2010 11:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I was referring to Scouting For Girls. On a sidetrack - Bon Jovi's Greatest Hits was the only CD (apart from The Best Of Sting) that my local poolhall used to play so consequently in the 2 years where I pretty much did nothing else with my time I picked up a fascination, then fatigue, then finally detestation of The Jovi. A process that happened alot quicker with Sting i might add.

"20 Ft Tall" and Damian Marley/Nas's "Strong Will Continue" are my big inspirational songs this year.

Mordy, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 15:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i love "20 feet tall" but "jump up in the air" is my go-get-em inspirational-motivational erykah track of choice this year.
