i've read a fair bit of the articles and threads, haven't listened to the music (or amazingly this video because it sounds amazing!)

(the circular electricity explanation is great, don't get me wrong, but I always thought it might have to do with missing valence electrons or something)

What up, ninja, with facepaint bright
In the Gathering late at night
What miracle hand or eye
Could frame thy clownface symmetry?

In what fucking deeps or skies
Burns fire like Faygo when it gets in thine eyes?
With what miracle that would shock thine eyelids?
Dare not a scientist explain me this fire

When fucking magnets started to work,
And fucking rainbows came after it rained,
Did he smile to be down with the clown?
Did He who made the Juffalo make thee?

d the anti-science element is one that stood out the most for me as far as this particular song goes.

atoms with missing electrons are probably more likely to experience an electrical force than a magnetic force due to the charge imbalance

And ICP, you can get stomped by Moby
You 30-something year old bald headed clowns, blow me
You don't know me, you're too old
Let it go, it's over, nobody cares about Faygo

Leonard Cohen's Violent J of Arc

Now the feathers they circled Violent J,
As he came riding through Frisco Bay;
No juggaloes to keep his Faygo safe,
No ninjas to get him through this very frenzied strafe.
He said, I’m tired of the whores,
I want the kind of naden I had before,
A juggalette or something tight,
To satisfy my swollen appetite.

Well, I’m glad to see you come this way,
And I see that you've brought fish today
But something in me yearns to win
something more from that psycho clown grin.
Who the fuck are you? J fiercely spit
An Angel? A Demon? Some Magical shit?
Why, I’m a pelican, it replied,
And I'd love some of your food, if you'd abide.

A talking bird! That's fukkin sweet!
I’m gonna give you fish to eat,
Saying this he fetched his phone
To get it on film, so Shaggy's brains would be fukkin blown.
And deep into his demon pouch
He took ahold a luscious trout,
While up above, the bird's descent
quickened it t'wards its true intent.

It was deep within his fiery heart
that J received a sudden start,
And thus the truth was clearly shown
Bitch bird was tryin' to eat his phone!
In trembling fear he ran away,
But still ponders such miracles to this day.
Water, Fire, Air and Dirt,
Fuckin magnets, how do they work?

The Connecticut Joint Chapters of the IEEE Microwave Theory & Techniques Society, Antenna & Propagation, Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society and the IEEE Student Branch at UCONN are presenting a lecture on: The Design of Electromagnetic Products by Dr. R@tnajeevan H0ole of RPI’s Graduate Center in Hartford, CT

Abstract:
The design of electromagnetic products has shifted from the guess-make-test-check-revise cycle of the period up to the 1960s, to the guess-analyze-check-revise cycle of the 1980s, to today’s state of the art methods of designing as a one step process. The several months’ long process in creating a device design is today down significantly. These new powerful one-shot design methods apply equally to the design of transistors, waveguides, antennae, electric machinery, recording systems and much more. Optimization remains at the very core of the methodology. However, these elegant methods require an expert who can come up with the starting design that, once postulated, can then be optimized.

will go and report back

i don't think icp were going for a critique of science per se as much as they're decrying the way the language of science (as successful and wonderful as it is) often reduces the beauty of nature to mere words.

Asstral Cheeks (latebloomer), Monday, 26 April 2010 02:10 (fourteen years ago) link

not saying i agree with them, but i think that's where the spirit of their sentiment is coming from.

Asstral Cheeks (latebloomer), Monday, 26 April 2010 02:16 (fourteen years ago) link

well yeah, i think that's a sentiment held by a lot of the "lay public"---like why can't a sunset be a sunset, why can't magnets just be fukkin magnets? why do we need to demystify the mysterious etc

it's still pretty stupid imo, because in my experience, the more you learn about science the weirder and more beautiful it gets

cf dawkins and "unweaving the rainbow," which addresses that sentiment head-on

GREAT JOB Mushroom head (gbx), Monday, 26 April 2010 02:19 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't disagree! though tbh i think that kind of argument is used in a misleading way by dawkins & his ilk.

don't really want to get into that though.

Asstral Cheeks (latebloomer), Monday, 26 April 2010 02:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I agree with you in part, because they spend so much time in awe of the natural world in the song, but the tone is too strongly anti-intellectual to read it as embracing both the worlds of empiricism and imagination. I mean, this is not like Wm. Blake's beef with Newton/Bacon/Locke here.

Walter Melon (Abbott), Monday, 26 April 2010 02:34 (fourteen years ago) link

"embracing both the worlds of empiricism and imagination" isn't exactly right –– in this song, they are spending a lot of time saying "here is some epic shit we think is awesome, and the awe it gives us makes us feel like there is beyond the comprehension of a mere mortal juggalo or jugalette." At the same time, they're not saying "this sense of awe is really dulled by attempts to explain it empirically, which is frustrating" or "science is inadequate at explaining why these feelings of grandeur and the sublime burn in my heart, and therefore it is a limiting worldview." Both of those messages I could understand & maybe even agree with to a certain extent, but I don't think either of those subtleties are captured in "y'all motherfuckers lying," which is a blanket dismissal not only of "the language of science," but of science itself. The dialogue ends there. They are not going to listen to anyone they disagree with, period. It's that "fuck you" that kind of kills whatever sublimity they were going for here.

Walter Melon (Abbott), Monday, 26 April 2010 02:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Not only of science itself, but basically of *thinking* itself. Don't try and figure anything out.

"i don't think icp were going for a critique of science per se as much as they're decrying the way the language of science (as successful and wonderful as it is) often reduces the beauty of nature to mere words"

They say scientists are lyin and shit. Its hard to spin that into "I think they're cheapening miracles by breaking them down with science."

Evan, Monday, 26 April 2010 03:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Oops, was just said. Nevermind.

Well, yeah. It maybe needs a full stanza to elaborate the idea. But then you would end up losing out on shoutouts to ghosts and pyramids, two of the most prominent natural phenomena that science completely fails to explain.

Austrian authorities say druids have been so successful in dealing with motorway accident blackspots in one area that they plan to extend the project nationwide.
