don't forget the APRIL2 code for another £2 off!

cozen, Monday, 26 April 2010 13:26 (fourteen years ago) link

£22.95 = a steal for a new game that's been getting good reviews.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Monday, 26 April 2010 15:29 (fourteen years ago) link

JimD - that's a big list that will keep you bust for a while, but if you're looking for more I wouldn't ignore Little Big Planet (GOTY Edition), which is only around £15 these days. Everybody's Golf is a fun, cartoony golf game - very solid. PixelJunk Eden & Monsters also usually get recommended. Superstardust is a pretty awesome twin stick shooter.

Oh totally forgot LBP, yep, will grab.

I tried some random Katamari demo and it was really terrible...? Like, "why the hell do people like this series"-terrible?

Hi Dere only the two PS2 katamari games were any good, the rest were lazy followups made after the guy who had designed the original games had quit. and now i've got 'lonely rolling star' in my head.

I rate them somewhat equally, though SuperStardust probably gives one more bang for their buck, as it's visually a ps3 showpiece, features more modes and variety (though you have to pay extra for some of the extra modes) and has longer gameplay (sometimes almost too long though). That said, I rate both a star less than Geometry Wars and its sequels.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 26 April 2010 22:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I still feel like I've got unfinished business with GWRE2, so maybe it's best not to dilute that impulse.

Think my blu-ray lens might just be dirty, any cleaning tips? Is attacking it with the hoover a good idea or a REALLY BAD ONE?

some people say not to use the brushes and some people say to.. I know you will get stung for a blu ray specific cleaner.... Is it reading the discs or just stuttering?

my opinionation (Hamildan), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 09:12 (fourteen years ago) link

it shows the disc on the, er, xmb, but says (after some whirring) 'unable to play disc' or somesuch, when you try to play it.

Are you still under warranty? Because if you crack open the case and the problem is more serious than a little dust, your warranty will be voided. Maybe better just to contact Sony or wherever you picked up the ps3 if it's still covered. If you're out of warranty you could try cracking that thing open and using a precision / valve duster (a can of which you can buy for around the price of a sandwich).

Tracer - me too! The great thing about the Powerful Pro series is that the game is very deep, and very much feels like baseball, but at the same time, it's very fast and arcadey fun. Games usually take about twenty minutes (as opposed to over an hour in a more "sim" title). Of course, the bummer is, unless you can read Japanese, there's a lot you're going to miss out on. I also happen to really enjoy the different atmosphere of Japanese baseball, so getting a peek into that world is another plus.

Totally didn't expect this to be the case, but the PS3 is working much better as a kids' console than the 360 has. Little Big Planet, Noby Noby Boy, Flower and even Wipeout are all big hits with the littlun. Still not in love with it myself, there are plenty of little annoyances (like not being able to have different profiles signed in on different controllers), but I felt this way about the 360 for the first 3 months.

floaty jumps still suck

abanana, Monday, 10 May 2010 13:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, if they didn't retune the platforming - which sucked - I have no interest. Still a pretty game to look at; hope it's fun to play this time.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 10 May 2010 13:41 (fourteen years ago) link

floaty jumping wasn't great, but the moving in & out of the screen was beyond frustrating at times

zappi, Monday, 10 May 2010 13:50 (fourteen years ago) link

That too! Shameful play made me glad I rented the first one instead of buying it.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 10 May 2010 14:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Pretty much disagree with you dudes - I had a blast with the included levels, playing them solo and with friends. I do vaguely agree that moving through the 3 planes could sometimes be a bit tricky, but overall, if anything, the game was too easy until the last couple of levels, and a bit on the short side. Where I personally would find fault with LBP1 is that the create & share aspects of the game didn't really draw me in - too complicated to do myself, too much shit by other people to wade through in a horrible menu system. The fact that that's the area they seem to be emphasizing for version 2 makes me less interested. Also, it doesn't exactly feel like the game needs another sequel already (maybe next gen).

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 10 May 2010 14:33 (fourteen years ago) link

My problem wasn't with the difficulty, but the imprecision of the controls. I liked watching other people play it though - an absolute beauty of a game.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 10 May 2010 14:38 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm kind of with Jeff, I'm only just playing it now and it's fine and fun, if no mario. And yeah, v pretty.

JimD, Monday, 10 May 2010 14:41 (fourteen years ago) link

every now & then i pick it back up cos its so pretty & well made - i'll be running through a level against the clock & have to move a block or something & then the 3 planes controls start acting up and ... back on the shelf the game goes.

zappi, Monday, 10 May 2010 15:00 (fourteen years ago) link

apparently it at least has m&kb support this time out

щ(゚Д゚щ) srs face (cozen), Monday, 10 May 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link

apparently it at least has m&kb support this time out

That's interesting - also move support, right (though at this point I don't see myself plunking down the cash for that)?

Sure the jump is floaty, but it goes with the style of the game perfectly. It's also absolutely precise. I don't know, I didn't have a problem with it at all. But then again, the best non-Mario platform game of all time, N/N+ has an even more floaty jump.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 10 May 2010 15:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I think on some level it didn't have enough of a story or mythos or something to make me want to play more than just one or two levels and then move on to something else, and unlike most platformers I didn't feel like there was an incentive to improve at it. It was more like walking through a funhouse or something. Actually, that Super Mario Brothers game from last year with all the bounciness issues felt like a superior example of the same sort of gameplay.

anyone else experienced any blacking out / screen flickering with their PS3? I'm connected via HDMI (and have tried several cables) and running at 1080p. only seemed to be happening on the dashboard, my PS3 was on for a while downloading demos so maybe it was a heat issue

not good either way

there's this thread w/similar reports from 2009
http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-General/PS3-Slim-quot-blacks-out-quot-every-once-in-a-while/td-p/43865748/page/2

cozen, Sunday, 16 May 2010 22:50 (fourteen years ago) link

just random black outs? I've noticed when going over hdmi now and then it will go black / then full of static for less than half a second (also makes a static popping sound), but I've only seen it happen when switching between a game and the dashboard, or going from the dashboard to a game. I believe it has something to do with the hdmi handshake - has been happening for three years to me, so no biggie. But maybe you're descibing something else?

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 16 May 2010 23:03 (fourteen years ago) link

I've had what you described before since I've had it, I just figured that was the machine's idiosyncrasies

today I was getting random black outs or flickering staticky screens (no popping sound though); and even an audio drop out in-game

switching tv inputs to antenna back to HDMI seems to sort it

hmm; I hope these come w/a manufacturer's warranty
