they sound like Atari Teenage Riot doing soulless pop

its not like im saying they use guitars so they are rock, they use an instrument in a way that is contiguous w. standard chillwave practice to make a sound that is basically like an slightly bitcrushed vers. of same

i dunno the songs i've heard have way more slammin beats and distorted guitars than some chillwave bullshit but whatev

i think they violate the central tenant of chillwave, which would be "chill"

if glo fi had stuck none of u would b arguing w. me except for ksh

yeah i mean plax you're hearing them structurally not viscerally which is fine i guess but wouldn't be my go-to move in this particular discussion

btw why have i never heard of these ppl before? is this one of those things that i've slept on but rly their whole catalog is great or something?

also feel like there is a certain inherent disssonance in chillwave, left over from its spiritual forefathers of like ariel pink, panda bear, that these guys are just more explicit abt.

I think they're alright. Novelty wears off after repeated exposure. Marnie/Deerhoof/Ponytail comparisons are otm, plus I guess they seem to me like the next step in indie interpolations of modern R+B, following from the Dirty Projectors, The XX, Hot Chip, Discovery etc.

"the ting tings it's ok to like" still the most otm statement about this band

so what puts them in the "ok to like" category & the Ting Tings in the "not ok to like" category

i'm always interested in looking at the factors that lead to the acceptance or rejection of a band by a given group

Bummer that we don't get a 'proper' version of Ring Ring on the album.

I'm with plax on them not being the antithesis of chillwave or all about the 'in yr face'ness of it all. Beach Girls and Ring Ring etc. have a pretty summertime chill vibe in the vocals. I forget who described it as like...bike riding music, but that seems pretty apt to my ears.

(I mean, not A/B Machines or Treats clearly but some of their stuff has a pretty chill vibe to it.)
