That "Faith" is just killing me. It's like it's personal or something.

wow what sad hater put together that fanboyanatomy.jpg

feel bad for that guy

These "discarded" rarities have me p stoked for the box - £11.99 on Amazon UK is top value for me as I don't have Disintegration in anything other than vinyl & downlooted mp3.

Disintegration has really grown on me in recent years, despite my hissy fit about it beating Faith, Pornography & Seventeen Seconds in the albums poll. I think it might be second behind Pornography for me now.

oh did u say disintegration was better than faith? funny that I can still hear you seeing as how you are DEAD TO ME

Yeah, I'd take Faith over Pornography I think.

Faith for me as well as the album above all the others. I never tire of it.

So I assume these outtake, er, outtakes will get officially released at some point, right? Stream-only is like a sucker punch tease.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 15 May 2010 13:46 (fourteen years ago) link

lol no Stan I put Pornography over Faith but to say Faith < Disintegration is still madness to me

tbh though I think I've listened to the Cure exactly once in the past 10 years and am mainly just memory-laneing here for lols

xpost -- No I'm figuring this is it for any kind of formal release. There's the download link above that's posted if you want a rip of the stream.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 May 2010 14:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I am still missing the b-sides from those 2 CD Deluxe editions. Yes, I know they are all on "Join The Dots", but they would sort of complete the individual albums had they been included on those second CDs instead of some of those alternative versions or live versions.

Like Ned says. It's been, what, nine years since they last did a similar streaming microsite of unreleased alt versions, and no sign of a release on those.

(it's a huge shame on this one, if they could have just released Entreat Plus as it's own album!)

So.. Delirious Night! I love it! I wonder why they didn't do something proper with that?

They will be streaming a full live show (Dallas) from that era starting May 24th on that site as well, by the way.

Sadly I don't think this is true - looks like it's just going to be the tracks from Disintegration, rather than the whole show :-( Also it's not streaming yet, anyway.

Looks like you're right, I hadn't looked at the setlist before. :-(
Still, I don't expect it to be bad :-)

I'm not trying to be contrary on purpose, but I think I prefer the alternate rarities to the ones on the actual disc and Dallas to this Entreat Plus mix.

nine months pass...

while we wait for Wish, found this incredible piece about the Cure.

http://www.threeimaginarygirls.com/story/2011mar/looking-back-cure-1991

Relating this to The Cure, they were still riding high on the unanticipated success of Disintegration and looking towards the future with an optimistic perspective. They had everything in their favor at this point...

It is a shame, really, because in early 1991, The Cure were well on their way to making a record that was going to be better than Disintegration. If these songs were not tampered with, Wish could have easily topped its predecessor. They likely chose to change directions because of the arrival of grunge and perhaps a desire to shed their gloomy, Goth image a bit - but this decision was truly tragic. If there is some early version of the record out there, I would love to hear it. The "Wendy Time" demo hints at what could have been, while the instrumental version of "The Big Hand" is shimmeringly beautiful. I hope there's a vocal version of this somewhere in the vaults, and the "Wendy Time" demo reminds me that this band, at that point in time, was merely untouchable.

Good article, thanks Bee OK. The change in Wendy Time from demo to album is remarkable.

Interesting. I followed a lot of the links in that article, and I can see why they band sped things up or made the songs more aggressive. Most of the "Wish" tracks benefit from the decision, especially "Cut," IMO. Anyway, looking at clips lead me to this live 1979 version of "A Forest," which is likely, er, "speeded" up, too.

Takes a while for the band to show up.

it is a shame, really, because in early 2011, threeimaginarygirls.com was well on its way to writing an article that didn't assume everyone believes Disintegration is better than Wish. if this article was not so presumptive, it could have easily said some people prefer Wish to Disintegration.

(i can't say it's *better*, hard to say objectively... Disintegration is certainly more of a piece, etc. but i play Wish more often, and that has to mean something... just sayin')

thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Sunday, 13 March 2011 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Of course people can't "objectively" say that but if you're subjectively placing Wish above or beside Disintegration you're in something of a minority.

Best Cure Album (Poll Closes May 25)

1 out of 108 votes, compared with 38 for Disintegration.

not saying it's better/above, but saying i listen to it more often-- maybe i prefer it? dunno.

Apparently planning to do "Mixed Up" at first.

I accidentally bought the reissue of Head On The Door twice. I need Three Imaginary Boys, The Top and Kiss Me reissues. Anybody want to swap?
