can't remember the dude, it was on the undercard of the PPV where brock lesner won and then freaked out and did some WWE heel style rant after and got in trouble for shitting on the beer sponser on air

Hey, if he writes melodies like 'Ye does on 808s, I would happily.

I think they're pretty great; really primal melodies that just smack you across the face. For me, at least.
― rennavate, Friday, 14 May 2010 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link
"primal melodies that just smack you across the face" and "stilted melodies that don't go anywhere" don't really seem like mutually exclusive descriptions, just ones that come with different value judgements.

yeah, thinking something is melodically inept makes me geir! you got it! gold star for you!

i never much cared about kanye being a "dick" -- we listen to rap music right? i mean
― contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:27 (thirteen years ago) link
never bothered me but it's pretty clear kanye is a different kind of dick than most other rappers
― samosa gibreel, Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:30 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah idk -- i kinda skimmed this thread cuz i'm tired of this discussion anyway so i have nothing to respond to
― contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:32 (thirteen years ago) link
anyway i still dig "find your love"
on 808s, kanye is a dick in the way that the dashboard confessional is a dick. fuck outta here.
― i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:33 (thirteen years ago) link
dashboard confessional dude
i like 808s and heartbreak and i do not like this new drake song
― samosa gibreel, Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:36 (thirteen years ago) link
mostly i just think 808s has great music -- the basis of the songs is an afterthought to me anyway because it's emotionally infantile, undercooked & full of platitudes -- again, that doesn't bother me but i see how it could turn others off -- i believe i've said this before but my view of 808s is def colored in a positive way because of how it fits into kanye's career -- it's much more interesting to me as a major pop album -- eventually it hit me on as base a musical level as possible, but there's def a different element to it that i dig
― contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:58 (thirteen years ago) link
tbh tho like, personally i find myself being affected by dudes off-record personas more than their on record -- like, 50 cent being a dick irl kinda made me not want to listen to his music, regardless of what he was saying on record -- i can deal with kanye's "dickishness" (even tho it comes off to me in a rather normal & non-offensive way) because i find him to be a compelling off-record persona/pop star -- i don't judge it based on "he's annoying on this record"
― contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 04:01 (thirteen years ago) link
J0rdan ridiculously OTM re: 808s.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 15 May 2010 04:49 (thirteen years ago) link
I don't like it musically, though.
― i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Saturday, 15 May 2010 06:01 (thirteen years ago) link
Fair play, R. I think it's musically really engaging for me, even if I sort of agree with J0rdan on the bit about 'Ye's songwriting. But I think it's strong on the record too, and I've explained why in the past. I just think it's a great record. I like College Dropout and Graduation better, but I like 808s more than Late Registration.
― rennavate, Saturday, 15 May 2010 07:44 (thirteen years ago) link
kanye seems like way more of a dick IRL than 50

thank me later version of "shut it down" -- http://hulkshare.com/vqmrw64rpuf8 -- has a full dream verse apparently, also some other different flourishes

dream's actual verse is lame & this adds a drake rap verse, which...
glad the one drake song i actually liked has been ruined

is there ANY enthusiasm for this dude amongst people we know? i don't think i knew anyone who particularly rated him but i'm seeing a lot more annoyance that his career appears to still be going strong these days. i don't understand why one would actively be a fan of him.

I like Drake a lot, actually, but I'm no Caramanica and Fennessey so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. I don't think he's the BEST RAPPER ALIVE!! or that his album will be a classic (far from it) but I think he's fun. Although, really, he's no "fun" at all. He doesn't seem like he knows how to have a good time, you know?
― rennavate, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:16 (thirteen years ago) link
there are definitely a lot of people who are on the "he's not bad, Best I Ever Had is a great pop song" tip, but i think we're talking about hardcore acolytes who think he's A Big Deal For Good Reason
― Truollmas (some dude), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:18 (thirteen years ago) link
I think Drake' kind of a big deal (no Clipse) but not necessarily for the reason that he's a stud rapper.
― rennavate, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link
well yeah, i'm talking about people that don't have to stifle a laugh at lines like ALL HAIL MR. LYRICAL

listening to the leaked joint with jay... dude just has a really unlistenable voice -- shit is so whiny

Because you are a Pop Music Critic, and Drake is an Important Pop Music Artist, you are supposed to Listen To Popular Artists, in order to Have Informed Opinions On Important Albums In The Pop Music Landscape?

didn't even make it to "find your love" which i actually like

obv everyone is talking about the "i planted a money tree/ which is ironic/ because my mom was a florist" line
That's the first I've heard of it. Hopefully the last, also.
