There is a vibe in fashion that only losers or The Worthy complain about the exploitation of people working professionally in the industry, the idea being that successful people have more important things (and people) to worry about. A commenter at Tavi's blog pointed out that such indignities would never befall Anna Wintour's daughter - which is kind of the point Tavi is trying to make, that this is a bully who preys on the powerless on those occasions he can.

He has just been dropped by Target and Vogue because, hey, it turns out he's a rapey creep. Who knew?

I feel like there's a parallel here with Donald Sterling -- "so this is what changed your mind?"

Exactly. Nobody with even the vaguest interest in fashion could have been under any illusion about him being a vile predator but it's good to see the right thing being done, if only for the wrong reasons.

But also, people do things, and then they have regrets, and that’s also nothing to do with me. Then don’t do pictures like that again … I’m okay with myself about everything, and that to me is the most important thing.
that is very fucking far from the most important thing imo

I already (thought that I) thought the worst of this guy, but the nymag article made me think worse.nobody's acting like this is a cool rehabilitating article right?
― chinavision!, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 03:23 (nine years ago) link
Not really "rehabilitating" but certainly overly balanced.

what is 'overly balanced'
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 07:27 (nine years ago) link
nb the article i linked is reading more into the nymag article than i think is reasonable ... but then i came away from reading the ny mag article thinking terry was a bigger scumbag than i thought so idk why it's being seen as esp. forgiving
the headline on the nymag article, though, def sets a really stupid tone

― just sayin, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 07:31 (nine years ago) link
isn't that a projection

like, i see these two paragraphs next to each other:
But he seems either unaware of or unwilling to acknowledge the ways in which coercion can be unspoken and situational. A prominent photography agent identifies the potential for abuse. “Kate Moss wasn’t asked to grab a hard dick,” this person says. “Miley Cyrus wasn’t asked to grab a hard dick. H&M models weren’t asked to grab a hard dick. But these other girls, the 19-year-old girl from Whereverville, should be the one to say, ‘I don’t think this is a good idea’? These girls are told by agents how important he is, and then they show up and it’s a bait and switch. This guy and his friends are literally like, ‘Grab my boner.’ Is this girl going to say no? And go back to the village? That’s not a real choice. It’s a false choice.”
Someone who’s spoken with Richardson about the Kibosh project recalls him describing his feelings with some nuance. “He said, ‘I was really up front about the kind of work I was making, and it came from pain; it was an expression of the pain and trauma I’ve experienced in my life, and I’m not proud of it.’ ” In our conversations, Richardson was less introspective and more defensive. “I don’t have any regrets about the work at all,” he tells me, “but obviously I don’t ever want someone to feel like that. It was never my intention. But also, people do things, and then they have regrets, and that’s also nothing to do with me. Then don’t do pictures like that again … I’m okay with myself about everything, and that to me is the most important thing.”
It's the structure of 'both sides' but not the content. i mean, apparently a lot of people aren't reading it the way i did, so some of that has to fall on the writer—when I read the "Canyons" (lindsey lohan, james deen, etc.) piece in the new york times, it was a lot more dryly humorous. So maybe this piece is sloppier? But nonetheless, I read that last paragraph as pretty damning.

The article does raise some of the concerns but, in my view, makes the ideas that he has 'pushed his art into grey areas that some people are uncomfortable with' and 'he is a rapist and sexual predator' seem like equally defensible positions. Maybe it is projection, i don't know.
― Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 07:49 (nine years ago) link
for an overly balanced article it seems to have made people universally grossed out by terry richardson, so... maybe it's not overly balanced?like you might as well show 'both sides of the story' if one is clearly super damning and then your point is made. maybe I'm misreading though.
― chinavision!, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 12:42 (nine years ago) link

tbf there were rumors ahead of time that NYmag was working on something 100% in his defense and what they actually ran was pretty warts and all beyond the quotes TR gave, and in a way it's more damning for that stuff to appear in a piece that he cooperated with and was interviewed for.

Hah I didn't know his dad was also a famous fashion photog
― 龜, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 13:09 (nine years ago) link
That Dame mag piece is just weird. The prima facie idiocy of the "other side of the story" is all the more damning. It would be a less effective takedown without the stuff from the Richardson camp.
― ugh (lukas), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 15:27 (nine years ago) link
Yeah, the details about his dad are the only new parts of this for me (and that he took up with 17-year-old Anjelica Houston when TR was a kid).

On the one hand, Gavin Mcinnes liked the piece. On the other hand, Ross douthat was opposed.

Yeah this was my line of thinking. I don't need the writer to hold my hand on whose quotes are dumb and whose aren't when it seems self evident to me
