Also Alex was much better when he was on BBC2 ruining the film for you before it started than that clueless Irish bloke who took over from him.

"What Scorcese's is tryin' ta say in this scene is..."

... repeat ad nauseum in N. Irish accent

You also got the feeling that Alex liked more movies than were in The Lads' Mag Guide to Films with Swearing and Gangsters.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Didn't Cox quit because the BBC told him that in future they wouldn't show subtitled films on BBC2 anymore? And I don't think they do.

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:03 (eighteen years ago) link

(British television - best in the world etc)

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:04 (eighteen years ago) link

This is why I got Sky. Fuck a BBC, the dumbing down BASTODS.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:06 (eighteen years ago) link

So when was the last time a Syberberg movie was shown on Sky then?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:08 (eighteen years ago) link

you can't have Syberberg w/o Skyberberg

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Not that I'm especially interested in seeing a Syberberg movie but I'd least I'd like the opportunity to turn my nose up at it once in a while

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Sky got a whole Arts channel, dude. Plus 2 movie channels showing foreign/classic/arthouse stuff. Plus TCM and the Horror Channel.

(NB I am not a shill.)

Cox by a mile. He occasionally pops up with bits of journalism in the Guardian and more obscure places - very sharp politically. His website is worth checking out.

search: Highway Patrolman

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:46 (eighteen years ago) link

is highway patrolman "like" repo man in any way, morbius? i want to see it anyway but i've always been kind of intrigued that cox didn't seem to be able to get what worked in RM to work again

(the best thing abt sid and nancy = the entire future cast of eastenders w. mohawks and/or green hair)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Quadrophenia = the entire future cast of The Bill in Parkas.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah! But:

The entire cast of Eastenders = the entire future cast of The Bill

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Feck I forgot all about that. What did he film?

xpost

I think they have an exchange scheme. That ginger alcoholic who was nobbing Joss Ackland is on Beastenders now.

Hang on, that's the wrong song isn't it?

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Back to Alex Cox. I imdb'd him. He did "Death and the Compass"! I rilly rilly need to see this.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Is that about that schoolgirl who got attacked by one of her classmates?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Or was that "Death and the Protractor"?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:13 (eighteen years ago) link

My favourite Bill line ever (from back in the day when it was half an hour and good): "We need somebody to go deep undercover. And I don't mean June Ackland blacked up."

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I just saw it for the first time in 18 years... It is not, save for one surreal moment in a psychiatric session. Still holds up nicely, probably the best thing he's done that I've seen.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 17 November 2011 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

i shall track it down: i remember the village voice liked it at the time, and always wanted to see it

Someone should commission Alex Cox's 'A Story of Film'.

also Cox's UCLA thesis film is on the HP DVD; it's not bad even though he plays the lead.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 17 November 2011 17:57 (twelve years ago) link

still haven't seen Death and the Compass, keep vaguely mixing up the memory of it existing with The Spider's Stratagem and then forgetting it exists

Ridin' Skyrims (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 November 2011 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

two years pass...

Love a bunch of Cox's movies. I own Repo Man, Straight to Hell, Walker and Revengers Tragedy on DVD. Revengers Tragedy is really fucked up.
