Wow, logic like this (how to split "gay" from "not gay") almost reminds me of how "gender" is assigned to all nouns in French. (such as the French word for "vagina" is male, etc.)
I say we consult Gaydar the Magnificent

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying it's in the same league as lovesexy, sign o the times, parade, or even around the world but it's still pretty damn great.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Did you just go from the King Missle lyric thing into Tool lyrics? It doesnt't matter anyhoh, because right now I'm smelling kittenshit from my wife's new pet, and it goes well with the GoGos song "Vacation" thats playing on my Winamp now.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Man, I've forgotten the joys of binge drinking in the last 2 weeks.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

there were raised eyebrows and murmurs of 'is he losing it' for 'lovesexy' - this tho, crikey this finished him for me.
wasn't it one of the only albums ever that made number 1
on 'both sides of the atlantic' at the same time as it's lead-off
single was number one 'on both sides' too ?

can't think of anyone else doing that.

it was all hype anyway. muchlike the film.

atention show-offs ! now's the point where you say
"i thought 200 balloons was better than anything off the album anyway"

piscesboy, Monday, 17 February 2003 13:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

But "200 Ballons" wasn't better than "Lemon Crush"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Classic - 'Batdance' was a fantastic melange of funky superhero bombast and op-rock the likes of which we hadnt witnessed since Bo Rap - 'The Future' and 'Partyman' were particularly ace too

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 February 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

but then i liked the film as well - i remember the thrill of going to see a 12 rated film (first film to be rated 12 in the UK) when i was only 11 - woo, blame Public Enemy with all their 'Fight the power' talk if you will

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 February 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Partyman" is the worst song on the album and Prince's worst single by miles: DISCUSS.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

the line 'aint nothin but a muffin, we gotta lotta butter to go!' seems to scream 'Dan Perry is wrong, Dan Perry is wrong' from the rafters ;)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 February 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

'7' is Prince's worst single for me

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 February 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Okay, that's madness. "7" has those fantastic harmonies in the chorus as well as that groovin' bassline. "Partyman" is shrill funk-rock with Prince's annoying traits turned up to 11.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

to be honest i'd probably cringe severely at hearing 'Partyman' now so no need to argue...esp. when i confess i quite liked 'Dolphin' too

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 February 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

but what about 'The Morning Paper'?! (oops, thread hijack i guess, tut tut)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 February 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

That was a single???

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Great record - and completely recorded and mixed in just under 3 weeks. Something in that silly ass movie really inspired him (Kim Basinger?) at the time, and I think this was the last great piece of work from "classic era" Prince. Nobody could touch something like "Lemon Crush" or "Electric Chair" at the time.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 17 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

outrageous self-sampled guitar that is hard to recreate - awesome

As its own album, I'm sure its fine (though far from his finest hour), but I never thought it fit the film in the slightest.

"Partyman" is the worst song on the album and Prince's worst single by miles: DISCUSS.
Well, "Partyman" is to Prince what "Fashion" is to David Bowie. A theoretically dispicable piece of music that for all its flaws is awkwardly catchy and memorably broken. In your saner moments you would hate it (and hit the "skip track" button) but most of the time its like a faintly bad but still compelling smell.
Granted, "Partyman" is better than "Fashion", but thats not saying much.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hey! Don't go cuttin' on "Fashion"!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Where the analogy falls down is that "Fashion" works and "Partyman" doesn't. (I would say that being tied to the most embarrassing scene in the movie works against "Partyman" but I had the soundtrack before I saw the movie and disliked that song from day one, so it was more the movie reinforcing preconception.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

the fact that i listened to this album every day for a year says something about how i ended up

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

one year passes...
I always thought "Trust" was a great song, but only just now did I realize why... he just recycled "Baby I'm a Star" with new lyrics.

also agreed about "Partyman". take it (okay, and maybe "Vikki Waiting" too) out and this album is nigh on perfect.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 15 October 2004 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

actually, hearing "partyman" sounds a hell of a lot like "daddy pop" from diamonds and pearls, another song i always hated.

*splutter* Partyman is a great song! One of the best things on the album! This has really grown on me over the years, it's such a strange and unique artifact, on a par with Sun Ra's "Batman" album for sheer bizarreness.

it wasn't as bad as i remembered it to be, but as i mentioned above, it sure as fuck sounds way too much like "daddy pop".

frankE (frankE), Friday, 15 October 2004 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think I could possibly listen to this now outside of the realm of weird nostalgia/novelty. It's mostly preposterous.
Though the 2nd half of the lyrics to "Batdance" are the work of some kind of lunatic genius:

"Hey Ducky, let me stick the 7-inch
In the computer
HA, HA, HA
Hey, we got the power
Oh, we got the soul
Hey, we got to sho'nuff get off
2 make the devil go, go

"This town needs an enema!"

"I'm gonna kill U"
POWER
"I'm not gonna kill U"
SOUL
"I'm gonna kill U"
POWER
"I'm not gonna kill U"
SOUL
Let's do it
"I'm BATMAN"
BATMAN
Don't stop dancin'
"I'm BATMAN"
BATMAN
Don't stop dancin'
Do it, do it, do it, do it
BATMAN, BATMAN, BATMAN
Don't stop, don't stop
Let's do it
Don't stop dancin'
Let's do it, BATMAN
Let's do it, BATMAN
Don't stop dancin'
Don't stop dancin'
No, damn it! Turn the music back up!
You son of a bitch!

"Have you ever heard of the healing power of laughter?"

Who's gonna stop 200 balloons?
Nobody!
Batman
Stop!"

Holy fuck. "Scandalous" sounds a hell of a lot like "The Beautiful Ones". No wonder this album rules so much. He ripped off all his best songs! (er...except for the one where that he ripped off later...or something like that)

frankE (frankE), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks for reviving this thread & reminding me to play this album again! I rarely get it out because I displayed my loyalty at the time by shelling out extra $ for the silly "Batcan" edition, in a round 5-inch tin that sits tucked away collecting dust, because it doesn't file with the other CDs.

Anyway, classic, if only for "Lemon Crush" -- a sublime example of the tossed-off insta-funk that your boy could seemingly do in his sleep back then. Lotsa other good ones, too.

This was one of the first records I truly, truly loved. My family went on holiday to Cyprus and I would sit inside the hotel room and stare out at the ocean and play it to death on my shitty Toshiba walkman. I would grudgingly interrupt listenings to go and play with the other kids at some lame hotel-organized play club thing, wondering which of those pale and geeky 13 year-old girls would be my own Vicki Vale...

Classic moment in Shaun of the Dead where the two roomies realize they can slow zombies by throwing vinyl into their brains -- they go through Purple Rain, Sign o' the Times and another couple of Prince records before they say, "BATMAN SOUNDTRACK?!?" and chuck the thing at his head. Brilliant stuff.

I agree. It has this reputation (put about by Prince himself) of being a dark record when it's not. Same as Batman has this reputation of being throwaway or "commercial" when it's really neither.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 20:45 (six years ago) link

received wisdom about Lovesexy - that it represented a big shift, was inferior, etc. - also inaccurate imo

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link

Yup. If anything, Lovesexy is one of his most focused!

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 21:25 (six years ago) link

The Black Album might be my favourite of the 3... hmmm nah, I think I like Lovesexy and Black Album equally but in a different way.
The former being more "poppy" and the latter more "funky".
A kinda of fight between Anna Stesia and Cindy C. !

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 26 October 2017 13:38 (six years ago) link

The presence of 'Dead On It' on The Black Album pretty much ensures it's his worst album of the '80s for me.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 26 October 2017 13:42 (six years ago) link

I don't hear the self-sabotage in Lovesexy... a lot has been made of the Black Album but I really think that whole situation was as simple as Prince cancelling a project because it wasn't up to standard and replacing it with something superior. It's not like Prince hadn't done that before, just that Black Album got as far as being pressed and the other projects didn't.

― Gholdfish Killah (Turrican)

i was thinking of his insistence on indexing the entire cd as one track.

I'm sure I've said this before but Batman is not just a better album than The Black Album, it's also darker.

― Gholdfish Killah (Turrican)

...and that's _after_ he cut "dance with the devil" for being "too dark"!

three years pass...

This came up in the Graffiti Bridge thread the other day. I just put this on after listening to For You, and it really is a far more enjoyable album, so much that I have to say it's underrated. For You has so little of what made Prince PRINCE that if you remove the title track and "Soft and Wet," what's left is a competent R&B record that's so conventional it's kind of dull. Switched over to Batman and even as a cranked-out job-for-hire, it's loaded with Prince's personality. It may lack ambition, but it feels effortless in the best way.

birdistheword, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 22:18 (three years ago) link

(I should add that "The Arms of Orion" is a gaping hole of crap. Skip that shit or slot in "200 Balloons" instead.)

"The Future" slaps.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 December 2020 22:21 (three years ago) link

Not only ambition, it lacks craft. It sounds like he bashes it out in a few days. But yeah its enjoyable. Batdance is fun :) I'd prob have preferred it if Tim burton used 1999 and baby I'm a star like he planned before prince jumped on board. Dont imagine burton or Nicholson thought they got prince on his best day when they heard the soundtrack.

candyman, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 22:28 (three years ago) link

But yeah, it's a quickie throwaway like the black album. Which is cool, but dont pretend like it isn't :p I mean, half of love sexy sounds throwaway too!

candyman, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 22:31 (three years ago) link

I've seen posted elsewhere, but it's been said that The Black Album (and its replacement, Lovesexy) marked a shift where Prince became less interested in crafting tight, polished songs. So you definitely hear that continue with Batman. Anyway, it's never going to be a major work but it's on par with the Magical Mystery Tour double EP - a highly enjoyable trifle that's more fun than the movie it was made for.

There is a longer version of the "Vicki Vale Mix" on the Batdance maxi single: 6 minutes instead of the 4 minutes on the video you linked. Both that and the "Batmix" version of Batdance (they're both remixed by Mark Moore of S-Express and William Orbit), as well as the technoish remix of The Future on its maxi, are awesome! In general, the maxi versions of the Batman singles + The Scandalous Sex Suite EP are all worth checking out, IMO the B-sides and remixes on them are better some of the tracks on the actual album.
