man, the pics really speak for themselves on this thread.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Dude but I am totally getting those first two that I posted on the Dream Theater thread, Speed Kills too. The Petrucci one has a blooper reel where he fucks up his prog-weeny guitar demonstrations!

once in a while they rope a respentable musician into doing these things (I'm getting this too):

see I would consider getting a Wooten DVD, Adrian Belew looks interesting too, though I'd rather get a Robert Fripp one if he ever does it.

I was about to point out as well that with the graphic design on most of these, take away the guitars, the dude's shirts, alter the title slightly, voila: gay porn box art.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Guitar playing IS different for girls: for one, you do not pretend to wank the guitar neck

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

dude that guitar for girls thing is trippy.

I have that Steve Smith dvd.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 23:08 (nineteen years ago) link

One of my friends downloaded some Paul Gilbert videos, they're AWESOME. The background behind him keeps changing from the beach, to chicks cheering him on, etc. He spends 10 minutes on a lick that "isn't exactly in a time signature, but it's great if you want some really fast picking to show off."

I used to buy cheap drum vids from the sale bin at this one music store in high school, like Bobby Rock and Nick McBrain (which is intentionally HILARIOUS, I highly recommend it).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 23:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I've watched it too, Jordan.

Now everytime at practice, I gently remind my drummer to balance the tip of his drumstick to the middle of the snare. Let it drop and bounce, drop and bounce.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 23:16 (nineteen years ago) link

And how many times has your gentle reminder gotten you a drumstick shoved up your ass?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 19 August 2004 01:13 (nineteen years ago) link

yknow, my music teacher once told me i played guitar like a girl.
so, maybe it is different. but he was kinda um, well.. mad.

A Robert Fripp guitar instructional video would r0x0r. Mr Fripp would undoubtedly fix the viewer w/a steely, studious glare, and regale him/her about the history of EG records, mixed in with factual corrections of his critics for 2 1/2 hrs. perhaps he will show you how to play a bit of "21st Century Schizoid man", or, perhaps he will spit on your foot, who knows?

ive been told i play guitar like a girl. like not developing a boston accent, though, i made a conscious decision to not play in a style that remotely resembles wanking or rock stars.

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 20 August 2004 05:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm ordering the Petrucci, Gambale (modes), and BB King DVDs tonight from Amazon, as these all come highly recommended in Guitar World's 75 essential guitar DVDs feature from back in January. I'll let you guys know the verdict: If I learned anything useful or just learned never to listen to Guitar World about anything ever again.
