Wow indeed. That's great. Gonna have to order that CD. Are the rest of the tracks good quality?

sorry, that's a terrible sounding video (and why didn't he edit out the 30 seconds of fumbling to put the record on in the beginning?)

Delroy Wilson - "I'll Do Anything For You"

Aaaargh...meant Denroy Morgan obviously. (See "Performers With Names That Practically Rhyme" thread. Whenever I think of this song, "White Man In Hammersmith Palais" accidentally sneaks into my head.)

Never thought of Belle Epoque's "Miss Broadway" as reggae. I always buy Beckett 12 inches in the hopes that they will be disco-reggae.

omg yes. a friend was playing that steel an skin album in his car a few months ago and i had forgotten what it was until now!

this is one of my favorite genres of music as well, fwiw

Thinking lots of British pop-funk stuff from the early '80s (not just Linx, who I mentioned above, but also Junior, the Quick, Imagination, David Grant solo) could fit here as well. (Hot Chocolate obviously a major inspiration for that whole scene.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 20 May 2010 19:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Y'all should check out the Joe Gibbs 12" Reggae Discomix Showcase compilation discs which have come out the past couple years. Volumes 4 and 5 just came out this year, and the tracklisting are full of this extended play disco/dubby/reggae stuff.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:11 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't really get how junior is reggae, tbh, nor imagination - aren't they just funk?

obv there's a lot of crossover with punk and new wave with this style of music. but then that's going to happen, ethnomusicologically

This too... I'm always looking out for tracks that have this bass'n'keys sloping melty groovy euro-jamaican-funk thing going on. In fact it's a growing obsession, so much so I'd love to start a band that pulls off this trick as a standard rule.

This is not really Reggae Disco, but it is the most magnificent Boney M track ever recorded by a million miles and couldn't be posted too many times. Seriously, one of my favourite tunes in the world.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 21 May 2010 00:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Stevie, you may be right about Junior and Imagination lacking reggae, though I wouldn't call them "just funk" -- Imagination were more disco I'd say, and Junior obviously had a pop Stevie Wonder thing going on. I definitely remember reggae rhythms on that Linx LP, though, and I'm pretty sure in a couple Quick tracks. Sooner or later I'll put all those LPs out and doublecheck. (Should doublecheck Gibson Bros and Johnny Chingas, too; I may be imagining their Jamaicanisms as well.)

Dog Latin -- Just out of curiosity, if "Name of The Game" counts, how about Ace Of Base? They definitely qualified as Swedish reggae sometimes. Maybe not disco enough though?

xhuxk, Friday, 21 May 2010 00:50 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost ps it's all about the piano chord solo at 4:30-ish.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 21 May 2010 00:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Ace Of Base - especially The Sign and All That She Wants count. Absolutely.

And if we're going to take things to an extreme here (and hey. that's what this thread is about:

i'm trying to think of an example from the Ze Records bands, but struggling. Surely Was Not Was, or James White did a reggae disco track?

this is the closest thing i can think of:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au8XQriJRV4

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 21 May 2010 01:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry if someone mentioned it (I didn't see it), but the ultimate one for me here is probably Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved." Sick of most of the Marley standards, but this one holds up very well for me. Rhythm track is fantastic. (And though I don't have my BPMs book handy, I'm guessing it's somewhere in the 114-116 range? Maybe even faster... which certainly adds to its disconess.)

aw yeah, definitely. and apologies if it seems i'm playing genre cop here. imagination were *weird, and brilliantly so. and 'mama useta say' is a genius single, i've always wanted to search and see if Junior had any other such greatness in his discography.

Nah, I don't discern much reggae there. Same for Hot Chocolate, I don't think they had any reggae influence at all.

Atmosfear's Dancing in Outer Space has a couple of moments when it becomes almost reggae - the laser-ska bit between 2:17 and 2:52, and that liquidy dub bit between about 5:25-6:25 which sounds like the dubwise equivalent of paddling a canoe in choppy waters.
