the difference:

1966: five or six major record labels run by people who had been around since days of al bowlly/glenn miller, didn't really have a clue about what the kids liked so were happy to throw anything into the mixer to see what came out.

2006: three or four multinational shareholder-driven organisations relying on instant returns, usually run by people who weren't even around in days of cobain, decided by committee what the kids should like so unhappy to throw anything into any mixer which doesn't sound like something that already came out, and therefore will make immediate money.

That sounds painfully true. Which is why there are still plenty of Phil Spectors, but almost no Brian Wilsons.

in the case of coldplay it's just that they aren't very talented.

i've still never heard an arctic monkeys song. am v happy and proud of this.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 08:25 (eighteen years ago) link

You get the feeling with Coldplay that the record company is so desperate for them to be massive that the records themselves are almost irrelevant.

i'm pretty sure i've heard 'i bet that you look good...'. i've def heard the sugababes version.

I notice everyone who raved over XY&Z six months ago now universally deem it a "disappointment."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 08:29 (eighteen years ago) link

or X&Y, or whatever the third Coldplay album was called (£4 in Berwick Street MVE!).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 08:29 (eighteen years ago) link

or BOTH

perhaps i should have been more specific... lets say... the dark side of the moon period, the meddle period.. NOT the wall period

i hate dark side of the moon!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 08:54 (eighteen years ago) link

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 08:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Heard all of the new album, too. Didn't really relight my fire, I'm sorry to say.

seven months pass...
this album isn't too bad.

some of it is kinda boring, but they're just kids n' all.

i like the song "riot van" the best, the slow number.

I'm really not proud of a lot of what I said (ESPECIALLY the 'saviours of British rock', whoops), not to mention the manner in which I said it, but hey, a rant's a rant!

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Friday, 12 January 2007 22:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I prefer the Arctic Monkeys to MUSE ffs

//// (fandango), Friday, 12 January 2007 22:43 (seventeen years ago) link

today is the first time i've heard the record. i'd only heard the look good on the dancefloor song before.

i guess i had low expectations.

a lot of it sounds like pretty typical u.s. indie rock w/english accents, but the best songs are pretty good. the lead dude has a good way about him sometimes.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 January 2007 22:48 (seventeen years ago) link

like maybe he could be the paul weller for kids that play playstation or someting someday.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 January 2007 22:49 (seventeen years ago) link

They do have a pinch of charm about them, despite the cliches and hackneyed subject matter. Especially in comparison to their competition (ok maybe I doo need to hear the Long Blondes & Gossip albums too... ), enthusiasm though, is something that they don't quite spark in me.

//// (fandango), Friday, 12 January 2007 22:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Look (on Metacritic) at which publications'/reviewers' end-of-the-year lists they topped. Bit of an Atlantic divide, whatwhat?

M. V. (M.V.), Friday, 12 January 2007 23:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Ive only heard a few songs and i think they're above alright, but not half as stunning as the hype suggests. My point is a dry one though. The 'working lads and lasses' et al who apparently will love this record, probably won't. The middle class fans (rock is pretty middle class these days, admit it!) who wish the proles would dig t'monkeys are missing one thing. Youth proles dig Mc'ing, rap, and other such genres, not rock! Round my area they don't anyway. Im afraid that the belief in, and empathy with the modern; 'gawd bless em workin' claas' which may give t'monkey's added cred, is a lie! Rock aint these kids main thing at all. Its just t'middle class kids hoping that a few kitchen sink lyrical snippets and regional accents might make it such. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. So there.

it seems like you could have any opinion of this band, depending on how charitable you feel like being and how much credit yr willing to give them cuz of how young they are.

i guess my default position is that every new "buzz band" of the UK is going to be a big huge pile of shit, so when something's kinda decent i'm all like "oh that's kinda nice, good for them!"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 13 January 2007 15:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Lucky you, Lex!

Srsly, are these losers still around?

DavidM* (unreal), Saturday, 13 January 2007 20:35 (seventeen years ago) link

that's a good one, but for nuclear holocaust in ABOUT ZERO SECONDS:

had to laugh at the reviewer here..what a shoddy review. Of course nothing in guitar based music is groundbreaking anymore,,its just impossible, its all been done before. However as someone who has not been particularly touched by anything musically since the Stone Roses debut this album is phenomenal, as good as you can get.

does the british press shorthand their name to "the arctics in glasto dust-up" or "the monkeys in glasto dust-up?"

three months pass...
Wow, that's odd, when I bought a cheapo DVD player recently, there was a CD already in it when I took it out of the box... I played a bit of it and then put it away 'cos I thought it'd be some crappy compilation being given away as a freebie. However when I put it into iTunes just now it turns out it's the first Arctic Monkeys album... what gives?

Tom D., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago) link

must be an evil dvd player.

funny farm, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

they can't give 'em away! except in this case obv.

blueski, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Was somebody listening to it in the DVD factory and forgot to take it out?

Tom D., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

love the idea of the Arctic Monkeys album being used as a Reference cd to check the DVD player works ok with audio cds.

mark e, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 18:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Someone probably returned it and forgot to take their CD out. Bummer!
