totally psyched, hope it's somewhat de-ferrellized

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 13:50 (thirteen years ago) link

love this show so much

delanie griffith (s1ocki), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 13:54 (thirteen years ago) link

afaict McBride gets half his moves from the Ferrell playbook regardless of whether WF is actually involved in the project at hand

some dude, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 13:54 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah :(

the first season felt to me like they had a movie script and padded it out into enough episodes for a mini-season, so i'm hoping for the second season the writers start really digging into things a little more. mcbride is a really good actor i think, he can handle it.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 14:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I am concerned that the supporting cast from s1 won't be around but prob I will never get tired of hearing Danny McBride swear

A B C, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Totally fascinating interview with John Hawkes (Deadwood and a million other things, including playing Kenny Powers' brother) - he says he won't be in Season 2 :(

Some interesting stuff (he seems to have pretty mixed feelings about the experience): http://www.avclub.com/articles/john-hawkes,41960/

RIP Tombot's older doppelganger

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:22 (thirteen years ago) link

he seems more ambivalent about lost

delanie griffith (s1ocki), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

it's interesting that he says he was on the fence about being the straight man or riffing; for my money he was totally written as the straight man and he basically played it that way - but you could tell there was something a little bit tentative about it - his eyes were searching for things, looking for openings, which as a straight man he really wouldn't be doing

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:28 (thirteen years ago) link

but i really liked that they didn't go with a big stereotypical construction dude - there are actually quite a few nice guy, gentle contractors out there like that

love how skinny and pale he was next to danny mcbride... them drinking beer in the pool...

I can't wait.

master of retardment (ENBB), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Anyone watch this then? They may have been fairly cheap lolz but i did find Kenny's midget sidekick pretty funny. Could maybe do with dialing back on the amount of slow-mo sequences set to music though.

Number None, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 02:14 (thirteen years ago) link

unless said sequences are ana de la reguera's ass accompanied by spanish 'night moves'. could maybe do w/ like 3 episodes of just that.

balls, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 02:36 (thirteen years ago) link

great episode though - that speech on the mound was beautiful. kenny fucking powers.

balls, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 02:38 (thirteen years ago) link

It was fun, glad it's back, but if this season is only 7 episodes, i wish twice as much had happened in that one.

The A.V. Club: Are you following the British-TV formula again this season for your episode count?

Danny McBride: Yeah, we follow the same formula. We liked how many episodes there were of The Office, Spaced, Alan Partridge, a lot of the British shows that we found we like. As fans, we like to watch multiple episodes, week after week, but as the creators… It’s really just written by Jody [Hill, co-creator], myself, and another writer, Shawn Harwell. We chose seven this year. That was about how many we felt like we needed to get our story across this year, and how many we felt like we could comfortably write without having to start to farm the work out to other people. It was important for us to have our hands on every part of the script.

In the same interview he maintains there's be a three-season cap. Wonder where that third one's headed. (xp)

I think people weren’t sure—especially with the main character, who’s an asshole...

I'm glad he cleared this up.

laughed all the way through. the speech was brilliant and actually, cheap lol, but him wanking while the noise of the clint eastwood film was on in the background actually made me laugh out loud, the expression on his face.

This article from Vice rather tragically reveals that Ana de la Reguera was wearing a "Booty Pop" for her scenes.

i've only watched the first ep and i already love this so i can't wait to see what comic wonders the beloved fifth ep holds in store

capybara picture show (another al3x), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 18:03 (thirteen years ago) link

danny mcbride is awesome obviously but god almighty i am tired of this mode of ferrell-esque storytelling where the main character is Really Good at Something, runs away from it, hits rock bottom, then has an epiphany (which is both mocked AND heavily leaned on to provide an emotional charge) and returns to glory - if not as successfully as before, then at least it's making him happy. this is the plot of Elf, of Anchorman, etc etc

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 30 September 2010 12:21 (thirteen years ago) link

at bottom it's an incredibly conservative worldview, i.e. you can't - and probably shouldn't - run away from your Authentic Self. this show is conservative in other respects too, i.e. the corny gentle family scene around the table which we are supposed to be in awe of or something. i guess that's mexico though - it's either crazy assholes or soulful natives with whom one can reconnect to the Authentic Vibes that Matter

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 30 September 2010 12:24 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess that's north carolina though - it's either crazy assholes or soulful natives

Kerm, Thursday, 30 September 2010 12:42 (thirteen years ago) link

ugh authentic vibes that matter are the worst

capybara picture show (another al3x), Thursday, 30 September 2010 13:12 (thirteen years ago) link

there were no 'authentic vibes that matter' in this episode, gimme a fuckin break tracer

you mean that one nice-seeming neighbour he had a conversation with?

http://tinyurl.com/tittyblam (s1ocki), Thursday, 30 September 2010 13:52 (thirteen years ago) link

btw in case u didnt notice dude emphatically did not 'return to glory'

http://tinyurl.com/tittyblam (s1ocki), Thursday, 30 September 2010 13:52 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean the family that he sat down and had a soulful dinner with, who helped him wash off his burro and remind him who he was

(i have only seen ep1)

btw i DID notice that he didn't return to glory but "if not as successfully as before, then at least it's making him happy"

i just wish this show didn't have to have these moments-of-shit™ that are both played for laughs and actually relied on to provide narrative heft. but without these there's actually nothing happening. still big <3 for danny mcbride though

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 30 September 2010 14:07 (thirteen years ago) link

i actually thought ep1 was pretty weak (foul-mouthed little person? really?)

im not sure he's... happy?

http://tinyurl.com/tittyblam (s1ocki), Thursday, 30 September 2010 14:12 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, he made it big young, failed spectacularly, and has failed at everything ever since

http://tinyurl.com/tittyblam (s1ocki), Thursday, 30 September 2010 14:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Great thing about season 1 was that his 'comeback' was knocking a dude's eye out. Then that went nowhere and he ran.
