name one HBO show besides Sopranos that didn't/doesn't do a new season every year

actually, I'll name another, Curb Your Enthusiasm, but i think that's it

fantast (ico) (some dude), Sunday, 20 June 2010 14:06 (thirteen years ago) link

The Wire had a significant gap between seasons 3 and 4, but that was partly because they weren't sure if they were going to renew it.

Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Sunday, 20 June 2010 14:25 (thirteen years ago) link

at this point, I am wondering if it might not be better if some talented cable TV writers finished this thing for him. I am losing faith that he has any idea where he is going with these books.

I hope this starts a trend of classy TV fantasy adaptations. Someone should do Perdido Street Station (though would be fucking expensive). Do these books have monsters and magic and shit, or is it just guys fighting with swords?

rhythm fixated member (chap), Monday, 13 September 2010 15:44 (thirteen years ago) link

They have dragons and undead.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 13 September 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

only in the first and last episodes of this season though, that saves you some money right there

thomp, Monday, 13 September 2010 16:13 (thirteen years ago) link

perdido street station feels basically like a miniseries already! which is unfortunate in that the other bas-lag stuff wouldn't really work as further series of.

Looks nice and wintry

Number None, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 01:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Wasn't the guy in the first scene of the trailer also in the Lord of the Ring movies? I guess all "serious" fantasy movies/series now have to look kinda murky with muted colours, since LotR did that. Will anyone make a colourful fantasy movie anymore?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:41 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah thats sean bean... ive been reading the first book and im not a fantasy guy at all but its p. good... a lot of the early parts of the story take place in a wintery shithole, which limits your color choices... plus its kind of 'gritty' fantasy and they wanna convey that style/mood...

lotr movies were pretty colorful imo, like that part where they're in elfburg and the dwarf goes AND U HAVE MY AXE... lots of stuff actually... its just the color palette changes depending on context... i mean what do you want dude, rainbows over mount doom..

Well, not necessarily, of course it depends on the story... It's just that every recent live action fantasy seems to have had a similar muted colour palette as LotR, as if gritty fantasy was suddenly the only choice. For example, based on the trailer the Avatar The Las

It's just that every recent live action fantasy seems to have had a similar muted colour palette as LotR, as if gritty fantasy was suddenly the only choice. For example, based on the trailer the Avatar The Last Airbender movie has the same kind of look even though the source material is actually quite colourful and fun.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 12:10 (thirteen years ago) link

have you read the books? if there is one story that needs to look "gritty", it's this one.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 17:45 (thirteen years ago) link

So is each season going to be one book?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

God, I hope not. To me the best way to do it would be to break it down and rearrange in a linear timeline. Jump around between characters, like any good television drama with a ton of characters tends to do.

yes because there have been so, so many live action fantasy movies recently

A decent little write-up about the 10-minute making of that premiered and also the branding of the show.

this looks so awful. the throne of swords is a pretty stupid idea for a visual and this is not executed in any way that'd serve to redeem that

holy crap @ the wall, that is impressive. is the 2nd one supposed to be winterfell? don't remember things well enough to ID the first one, maybe the lannisters' castle? that was by the ocean iirc

i'm real tempted to reread the books now that the 5th one finally has a release date and i don't remember most of the plot details, but that's like...4000 pages of pulp fantasy when i already have a long list of new and probably better things to read, damn. i'll probably do it anyway

ciderpress, Thursday, 24 March 2011 23:34 (thirteen years ago) link

whatever you do Jon, DON'T TOUCH THE BOOK AT ALL, EVER.

So weird that from this point forward the show and books will be telling different stories. But then:

"So much of what we’re doing diverges from the books at this point .... People are going to be very surprised when they read the books after the show. They’re quite divergent in so many respects for the remainder of the show."

How the fuck do they know what Martin will or won't include in future unwritten books?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 23 March 2016 21:09 (eight years ago) link

I imagine they're in contact with him enough to know the outlines of what he's going to do.

Jenny Ondioleeene (Leee), Wednesday, 23 March 2016 21:10 (eight years ago) link

Sure, no doubt. But ... he's got hundreds, thousands of pages to write over the course of several years. There is no way the guy is going to stick to whatever script he has in mind and equally hard to believe he won't crib from theirs.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 23 March 2016 21:31 (eight years ago) link

I mean maybe the show won't exactly spoil the books, but I find it hard to believe that the show will vary so greatly from the endgame of the books or answers to big questions like "who are Jon snow's parents?"
