paid (but still ad-supported, grrrrr) version of Hulu coming to PS3 next month - anyone know if you'll need a separate $10/month account for each device or if one subscription covers all your digital gewgaws?

TOM SHITTYBISSELL (jamescobo), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I saw earlier today that apparently you also have to subscribe to PSN+ for the Hulu thing

whatttt

pass le corbusier (s1ocki), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 19:37 (thirteen years ago) link

so you have to pay two services, and it's still ad-supported.

ya, that's really gonna save them from people downloading shows from bittorrent sites.

not surprised that they locked it into the premium services (like Netflix did with Xbox Live) but the fact that it's still ad-supported did surprise me

why do I have spend 45 minutes downloading a system update that will "allow me to share photos and videos with my friends" before I can play RDR online?

The mandatory update also includes some video editing crap and all the necessary widgets for Move support, so there's that too.

I'm kind of surprised to find myslef coming around to the idea of Move. It's not a terribly inspiring idea, but "high precision Wiimote" isn't a bad thing, really. And there look to be a few decent titles at launch (Dead Space Extraction, Echochrome 2, Killzone 3 if that's your thing- kind of curious about FPS controls since I never really got used to playing them with a pad) and the potential for quick & dirty HD updates of the good third-party Wii games (No More Heroes, Madworld, Resident Evil 4, etc). And while everyone's raving about Child of Eden looking awesome with Kinect, possibly being the one title so far that justifies its existence, etc, I have the sneaking suspicion that performing the exact same actions while clutching a couple of Sony robodildos will be more or less indistinguishable.

Definitely not paying anywhere near full launch price, though, I'm not that easy of a mark. And the promo video they released for Heavy Rain with Move controls is spectacularly awful at advertising both the game and the control system. Yes, your girlfriend will be enchanted by creepy scenes of threatened sexual violence as she watches you punch at your TV! FUN FOR WHOLE FAMILY

For some types of games, Wii controls are great, especially with Motion+ (except that it gets out of sync sometimes), being able to do the same types of games, but in HD could be pretty nice. Like, I love Tiger Woods on Wii, especially chip shots and putting (drives kind of wear me out), but the crappy Wii graphics for the title take it down a notch... would love to have the same gameplay controls, but in beautiful HD - that one game could almost be worth the price of admission on Move for me.

Now I've heard some rumors, that like Motion+, the PS Move also goes out of sync and has to be re-synced fairly often - kind of a drag if true. The ergonomics of the Wii remote also isn't the best and the Move does look like it could be a slightly more comfortable / natural device to use.

But the main problems for me with Move remain the price, and so far, lack of compelling games (if, as I expect, the adoption rate remains low, we probably won't see a lot of games coming out designed specifically to take advantage of the controls, so it'll end up as a tacked on option at best, which is very bad). In regards to shooters, aiming and pointing at the screen with a remote is definitely better than using a joystick - however moving your character and viewpoint with the nunchuck (PS Sub-contoller?) plus the remote isn't as good as two analogue sticks, so it kind of evens out.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 1 July 2010 16:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm sure there will be a reasonable selection of Move games (during the first year of its release) but I would bet that they're going to be driving sales at first by patching in support for older games rather than releasing new software so that the Move looks like a value-add to preexisting PS3 diehards instead of a whole new set of gewgaws you "have" to buy.

TOM SHITTYBISSELL (jamescobo), Thursday, 1 July 2010 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link

PSN+ *NOT* required for Hulu Plus after all (at least not once they've rolled the service out fully):

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/110/1103974p1.html

two things:

1. lolololololol, looks like PSN+ is shitting the bed if Hulu's running scared from exclusivity already
2. looks like I'll be signing up for H+ after all! $120/year for all the TV entertainment you can stomach is a hell of good deal.

(also I'll ax again - does anyone know whether you can use the same H+ account on multiple devices, or would I have to get separate accounts for my iPhone and my PS3?)

TOM SHITTYBISSELL (jamescobo), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 19:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Hopefully they'll follow Netflix's lead and allow multiple devices, they'd be crazy not to.

On a side note, I just got an email from Joystiq telling me I've won a copy of Modnation Racers from a drawing I forgot I'd entered. The demo was fairly impressive, hopefully the full game will be worth my hard-earned $0.00.

obvious and old and bannable (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 23:08 (thirteen years ago) link

PSN+ is $50/year, not $20/month; Hulu+ is $10/month (and totally worth it if, like me, you decided to shear $80/month off your Time Warner bill by getting rid of cable and don't own a set of rabbit ears [though with The Football starting up again in a couple of months I should probably get on that last one])

TOM SHITTYBISSELL (jamescobo), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Here's why I opted in on PS+:

* the "only play while you're a member" codicil that almost frightened me off looks a lot less annoying when you're paying for a fifteen month membership; I don't think I've returned to a year old game in forever.
* following my 30gig xbox hd filling up, i bought the 120 gig PS3 and it's mostly empty and it chafes my chaps that I'm not getting to utilize it.
* i was gonna buy wipeout sooner or later anyway so that defrays the cost somewhat.
* I'm a real magpie with games and like the idea of having a selection of monthly things to choose from; if they give me an hour a pop of funtime and/or nostalgia, it's worth it.
* i REALLY REALLY needed the instadownload and instainstall option; I fucking hate constantly finding new things and waiting twenty minutes while the goddamn PS3 has to defragment or whatever the hell it is that it does.

I'm just waiting until they add cloud storage for saves

TOM SHITTYBISSELL (jamescobo), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 05:50 (thirteen years ago) link

why

young werther's originals (s1ocki), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 14:42 (thirteen years ago) link

bc when I gave my hard drive an upgrayedd last year I lost all my saves and was A Very Sad Jamescobo

TOM SHITTYBISSELL (jamescobo), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

that's avoidable u know just back it up

young werther's originals (s1ocki), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

u can copy them to a thumb drive, which would be like, a one-time payment of $5 instead of $10/mo

young werther's originals (s1ocki), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I did a full backup to a thumb drive before making the switch and then when I plugged it back in to restore everything it said the file was corrupt.

also cloud saves would let you go over to other ppls houses and load up your saves on their PS3s without having to bring over the aforementioned thumb drive

also thumbdrives ain't baller

TOM SHITTYBISSELL (jamescobo), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 21:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Anyone with Modnation Racers who wants some free DLC? I don't know what it is, but Joystiq emailed me a couple of download voucher codes and seeing as how I don't know anyone with the game I figured I'd ask around ILG.

Yeah I'll take it, thanks!

nate woolls, Friday, 9 July 2010 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link

OK, I'll get it mailed out as soon as I'm done with work. Apparently it's good for an extra character that's not available on PSN (no idea if that means "yet" or if it's OMG EXCLUSIVE or whatever).

Pleasure doing business with you. Just out of curiosity (my copy hasn't arrived yet and probably won't for another week or so)- how many of the user-created tracks are just enormous dicks?
