I do love the Coming Up video, classic Paul. and a nod to the Sparks even

never been a huge fan of this record ... and yet i'm considering downloading the double lp version on the octaner blog ... paul is sometimes at his best when he's at his most tossed off.

I'm just kidding. Mostly. A few years ago he came into the radio station my mom works at and was flirting with her, but she was recently divorced and didn't see the signs. She's got some of it recorded. He sang her happy birthday.

Re: the (incredibly irritating) video for "Comin' Up", could someone please tell me who the drummer is Macca is impersonating? Bugged me for years - he looks like a cross between David Bellamy (Americans are advised to google here) and Levon Helm.

Oh right... Wiki tells me it's supposed to be Ginger Baker but it still looks more like David Bellamy meets Levon Helm to me

I got track 11, but my Temporary Secretary was all glitchy.

Strange that those are both tunes from the official release.

Listened to this for the first time last night - holy shit, this is SICK!!! Why haven't people been drooling over this for years? Completely unlike anything you'd expect from Macca. Reminds me of Ariel Pink somehow... I love "Coming Up" - was it a single or something, cos it sounds very familiar?

So pleased about this thread and this album. Not least because most of these tracks would've most likely been seen as cackhanded garbage in their day, but it's such a surprise to hear Macca doing a kind of electric psychobilly/new wave party record - never thought he had it in him.

The B-side, the live Wings version of "Coming Up", became a #1 U.S. Billboard Hot 100 hit in June 1980. The A-side, the McCartney solo version, reached #2 in the UK.

so someone played the radio slave mix of temporary secretary out a couple weeks ago and it was p much a banger. still cant get into this album but i 'got' it for a second there.

that reissue looks dope EXCEPT it is shiiiiitty to put an edit of Check My Machine on the regular bonus disc and the full-length only on the extra-bonus one, and apparently w/ Band On The Run the 3-disc cost US$20 and the 4-disc cost US$100?!??!??!?!??!?!wtf

amazon lists the deluxe of this at $60 which means it will be less than that. I'm excited, love this album.

I don't care about "Check My Machine" (which is rubbish, frankly), but the album may benefit from the remastering if they do a good job. It doesn't sound very convincing on the current version.

"Darkroom" is so great sounding on the original vinyl! Super hot, warm, great separation.

yeah man there are like 5 records i miss owning and this is absolutely one of them, "Summer's Day" sounded SO good with a beer in hand

X-Post: The aesthetic in 1993, when the album was remastered, and also around the original CD release of the album, was very much pro-little separation. Separation has become more fashionable again lately, and that is one thing I really long forward to. The separation is also one of the most important improvements of the current Queen remasters, and they were originally reissued around the same time as the McCartney ones.

Btw. I suppose these will get the same design as the Lennon remasters and Badfinger remasters, with the Apple logo on the back and all.

Anyhoo, some real nice pix/interviews in this ultra-deluxe book/box. Giant reel box reproductions/multitrack rundown sheets, arrangement lead sheets for "Coming Up" and "Waterfalls", and a little bit of synth pron via shots of his Yamaha CS80 and Jupiter 4.

I've seen it, and it's one heavy duty book to be fair...

The only thing is: Macca1 is 2cds and a dvd, the 'special edition' is the 2cds.

whereas Macca2 has a cd extra for no extra charge on the 'deluxe', but you can't get it anywhere else....

Unless: There is also a 2LP version of both, and a d/l option is provided. Wonder if you get the 'extra' CD with that one? (The deluxe edition provides d/l of all 27 (i.e. specific) tracks)

I'm not rly arsed about the book though! I suppose it could be interesting to read all the stories behind, but
a) I don't need super-thick covers to enjoy that and
b) am not a macca nerd, just like his odder/electronic stuff & love that bootleg double version of the album from upthread and so would like a legit version with more stuff, so the stories are probly 98% boring wank about Linda's pies and Denny Laine's tunings and sheepdogs that I would never read again anyway.

anyway if there's one bloody artist in the world who doesn't need to do post-Radiohead multiple tiers of variously deluxe and boxed versions of a release, in order to monetise their small business in a world of digital piracy, it's Paul McCartney on EMI.

Picked up a vinyl Beach Boys Love You today, and upon revisiting I feel it is the Pet Sounds to McCartney II's Sgt. Pepper.

xp It looks like he played it one time in 2022, but that was during a VIP soundcheck set. Other than that he hasn't played it since 2017. I'm still futilely hoping he'll whip out "Secret Friend" one of these days...
