oh dude. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJTZoRxpbLE

i always liked how moloko could be pretty and totally fucking creepy at the same time.

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Monday, 12 July 2010 19:56 (thirteen years ago) link

joanna newsom can fuck STRAIGHT OFF btw

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Monday, 12 July 2010 19:56 (thirteen years ago) link

interesting opposite reaction - i liked goldfrapp the most when it was pretty, less so when she got creepy and weird.

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Monday, 12 July 2010 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

"The Flipside" is on the hits compilation, it's a bomb-ass track

^song no one else cares about that seems like it might have been custom designed to make me go O_O :D :D :D xpost

sometimes I think my favorite Moloko track is "Familiar Feeling" or "Indigo"

or "Killa Bunnies"

MOATY I'M HERE (HI DERE), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:03 (thirteen years ago) link

how people can still rate the hold steady albums after the first 2 is just so ficking baffling to me. by the time i heard the third one it was so clear that "BEEN THERE DONE THAT GOIN HERE AND DOIN IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN" was the modus operandi for that fucking band jesus christ

and i really like the first 2!

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:10 (thirteen years ago) link

haha i heard the third one first so

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:12 (thirteen years ago) link

actually that's a lie i had written off separation sunday but the third one seemed to have tighter songs. though the last time i listened to s.s. it was a monster, no doubt.

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:12 (thirteen years ago) link

moloko is in my personal "i don't get it" pile

goole, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the secret to getting Moloko is digging the first album, then discovering that she can sing like that live and is also like amazing beautiful

MOATY I'M HERE (HI DERE), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:24 (thirteen years ago) link

ha even that part is "idgi" and i like redheads :/

they just sounded kind of fakey to me, like someone's textbook example of 'experimental literate pop' come to life

but this is not my thread!

goole, Monday, 12 July 2010 20:25 (thirteen years ago) link

well they definitely started out super theatrical and put on, there's no question about that; you can't do a song like "Fun For Me" or "Where Is the What If the What Is in Why?" and claim 100% earnestness

by the time you get to stuff like "Sing It Back", "Familiar Feeling" and "Forever More" though, the theatricality is less dadaist and more grounded in realistic narrative, and then you have face-meltinginly beautiful things like this:

MOATY I'M HERE (HI DERE), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:30 (thirteen years ago) link

At one point I thought "I Am Not A Doctor" was the finest album ever recorded and those youtubes are making me think I may just have been right

that wobbling bass noise on "Knee Deepen" is a work of art

not sure I ever actually heard all of Things To Make And Do as I felt kinda betrayed by hit Boris Dlugosch remix etc, but Indigo is a pretty rad song, so I probably should get over decade-old kneejerking

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 12 July 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

"Pure Pleasure Seeker" is also rad

― goole, Monday, July 12, 2010 8:25 PM (1 hour ago)

this is a thread for everyone!

i had a negative reaction to things to make and do when i first got it but i just listened to it again on my way back to the shop and it would seem that i was dumb and wrong. way stranger than i recall.

so good. goole some time we will booze up and i have a moloko vs. that weird young lady you were talking about a few weeks ago listening party.

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Monday, 12 July 2010 22:14 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaha wow i just looked over the results list and i could pretty much go ahead and post my "so not going to happen" ballot right here on this thread without spoiling anything, but i suppose i'll wait and be good about it.

SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Monday, 12 July 2010 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

it is a shining example of non-tactical voting. which also only got me 2 albums on the countdown so

despite being one of like 3 Devin Townsend fans on ILM I haven't heard OF that one let alone heard it! also yes, I need to hear Gay Witch Abortion, as has been discussed. FOTL are great and I've seen them live and they were great live too and really funny between songs!

I've heard and liked Psychoscout too, would you believe. I put it on a few times during my stint at that classical and jazz store because the cover looked promising. Sold a few copies! One of the better nu-jazz acts - need to relisten.

That is devin townsends pop masterpiece and no, I am not being at all tongue in cheek

bearotaur say "I am so sorry" to me! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:37 (thirteen years ago) link

I can well believe he made a pop masterpiece! Dude was in The Wildhearts after all. Plus he's one of the great modern producers.

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, and he wrote 'Hide Nowhere' which is nothing if not a mile-wide slab of pure fucking pop genius

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 02:39 (thirteen years ago) link

holy shit

I didn't think it'd be THIS pop!! awesome x20

Yeah that's prob my favorite track, but here is something to appeal to the blood inside voter in you:

Be sure to lock in for the full 9 minutes, things will get good and weird

I just listened to the opening track and yeah this is good shit - about to bed in with yr suggested dementia tho

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:08 (thirteen years ago) link

when that dance-beat takes over I am like O_O

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:19 (thirteen years ago) link

this whole album is massively dope

RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:44 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i know! now of course there are 2 of us who give a shit about it, but man i really wish it had gotten more of a foothold. lady who is singing was in "The Gathering" who i never gave a shit about, but man she works well on here, and the vocal harmonies are just O_O. Really well written, prob too pop pretty for the metal dudes, and too metal for the mainstream so obscurity here we come.

bearotaur say "I am so sorry" to me! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:47 (thirteen years ago) link

thinking i should maybe resurrect the blog w/a youtube laden countdown of stuff i voted for (although some of it will prob not be anywhere, they only pressed 1000 of that Paleo album iirc).

btw just to derail and talk some more about Ellen Allien/Apparat/Modeselektor, this is Apparat's "Arcadia" off of Walls which I think is really awesome:

thought of doing the countdown here and then realized "hey how many threads can i start about me and my fascinating opinions before i become king douche" was a valid question. xpost

Bend It Like Bender! is currently rocking my sweet world like a giant male/female duetted popsharktopus

Really well written, prob too pop pretty for the metal dudes, and too metal for the mainstream so obscurity here we come.

well, speaking of which, have YOU heard...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aK_trE9qdfY

I've been going mental for the record that's on for the past week. Very different production-wise to Devin's work (or anything else ever made), but equally kickass.
