xpostGood lord, how have I never made the Jem connection? She's working on a new album and it's rumoured to be leaning towards a hip-hop sound...

has she quit music? she hasn't done anything in a while
six months since last tour and you think she's quit, not that she might be recording a second solo?
― oh sh!t a ¯\⎝⏠___⏠⎠/¯ (sic), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 00:59 (thirteen years ago) link
She was one of the worst live performers I have ever seen. No natural charisma whatsoever.

a hip hop sound, really? has she spoken of this in interviews? i caught her UK tour 2 or 3 years ago and yep, she wasn't very good onstage then either. when did you see her, boxedjoy?

weren't there stories of her really suffering badly from stage fright ?
suspect that would account for her lack of presence, and unimpressive shows.
― mark e, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 10:55 (thirteen years ago) link
I saw her on US tv last year and, despite liking the album quite a bit, I found her live performance just left of terrible.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 10:57 (thirteen years ago) link
she caught a Craig Nicholls diagnosis on the road

I think the whole charisma/stage-fright thing must certainly be down to her alleged Aspergers Syndrome.

Ugh, this new album. Such a letdown after her first pretty good one.

Yeah, it's a dud. I do like Cellophane though - M83 with a stronger vocalist.

This is a better new Tegan & Sara album than the new Tegan & Sara album.

Hmm. I think I'll be giving this a miss - I enjoyed one or two tracks on the debut, but not enough to keep following her work.

ah, I had totally forgotten about her !the first album was very good : hooks and hooks and hooks !(a bit in the same category as HAIM for me : very catchy retro pop).never got to listen to the second...

I just went to my local record store to buy either the new Ladyhawke or the Kristin Kontrol album. They didn't have either so I bought the Tegan & Sara album instead. I have a feeling I might end up regretting that.

The second album really was terrible. Happy to hear she's back on track with the new one.
― Kitchen Person, Friday, 3 June 2016 17:23 (seven years ago) link
yeah, the press release implies things were not good re the time of the second album, hence the whole folk singer blues groove, whereas this is back to the synths, and happy grooves.
― mark e, Friday, 3 June 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link
am I the only person who really likes the second album

Newest album hasn't been reviewed too favourably (57 on metacritic), but I'm finding it a more-than-passable 2016 Sky Ferreira substitute

"the river" and "chills" are essentially the same song though

So this is the bar now, eh?

Following this thread I went back to the first album and found it... average which is a surprise since I really liked it at the time.I guess that's what ageing does to you (or to an album) !
