Their song is on the radio right here, right now. The guy's voice is a little too rough for me, and he does a poor falsetto, and they use this song every time something historical happend. So dud.

jesus jones? hehe.

anyways, saw once and it was great. i think they were banned from playing seattle later on

I saw them once (alongside the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion circa that first self titled record, also the one time I saw them too) and it was great. They pretty much began their set exactly the way "Liar" beings.... *complete uneasy pause of silence then* "UUUNH!*ROCK*". Also Yow denounced song requests in a complete mock campy shell of pretense..."WEEEEEEEEE HAVE a setlist!... your requests are ignored."

I wish I had seen Fishwife (from San Diego). I heard Ryan was the only man who could possibly top Yow.

Okay, I do indeed Love Music, but this is the only thing I will post on this board today, simply because I feel it so strongly. I bought Bang today (the singles comp that j0hn refers to above), and while I already have most of the material on it, it is a revelation. It is just incredible. I forgot what a strong back catalogue they have, and how close their records come to the live experience. Is there any other band around at the moment that comes close to matching the intensity and musicianship of the Jesus Lizard? If so, could you point me their way?

The first time I got truly, totally, rippingly stoned, I was listening to Goat. The love was immediate, and still it lingers.

Jesus Lizard is one of my top five favorite bands. I already told the story of nearly getting Yow's penis in my eye in another thread so I will talk about the first JL show I saw. My friends and I had met David Yow and David William Sims at a Scratch Acid show, their last tour in support of Berserker. We also saw Sims in Rape Man with Steve Albini, before the Lizard came along. Theire first record, Pure, used a drum machine, so we were expecting a Big Black kind of show. Fortunately they rolled in DC Space with a real live drummer. They played a great set to about twenty people, my friends and I sang Block Buster with Dave and then they sat around and talked with us for a while, really nice people.
The next show they were in-fucking-sane. Yow squeezing his ballsack into grapefriut sized proportions, walking on the crowd while howling into a microphone, holding 100 people at bay like a rabid lion tamer and slamming Bushmills.
I was most impressed at the band being able to play a really long set to complete perfection, while the venue went totally bonkers. My favorite memory was Yow crowd surfing and singing through the first five songs at the Metro in Chicago (longest mic cable I've ever seen), until Sims politely asked "Can we have the singer back now?"
They really were the best live band ever, not just for the antics but because they could play.

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:56 (twenty years ago) link

i used to like them a lot. i think the real reason there is no jesus lizard thread is because they never did it as well as the birthday party / zeppelin.

bob snoom, Thursday, 8 May 2003 15:03 (twenty years ago) link

I saw Jesus Lizard a few times and they were out of this world. I've seen alot of rock bands, but the guitar, bass, and drum combo (with Mac) is by far the most powerful musical wrecking crew I ever have heard. The last time I saw them with Kimball on drums and it was good, but he is a much more controlled player than Mac.

Yow is quite unique vocalist, to say the least.

I've said it before on another thread, but Duane Denison is very underrated as a guitarist. He has such a developed technique and uses it with such great effeciency. The guy flat out knows his chords.

I don't know about Zep as that is bedrock with me, but I like the Jesus Lizard quite a bit more than The Birthday Party.

Funny enough I just listened to Down again two days ago, as I'm in the midst of a cd purge. Unfortunately it didn't make the cut. I can't put my finger on why it sounded so uninvolving - I mean, it's them, doing what they do - but it really seems to lack the spark that was present on Goat and Liar.

I once sat under a stage for two hours when I was underage so I could see the Jesus Lizard. Incredible, incredible band. I was in the front, and within the first 10 seconds of the first song (the first one off Goat, I think), Yow jumped on top of me. Fortunately he wasn't naked.

Weird. I saw them at least three times that I can recall (there may be another show in there that alcohol has dimmed the memory of), but Yow never whipped it out.

And yes, Liar is great, which is probably why Down seemed comparatively lackluster.

one of the top 10 live shows i've seen. yow was soaked with sweat and the crowd passed him over their heads all the way to the back of the club (Tramps RIP). he was screaming in the mic the whole time. the noise and charge was fucking *huge*. sigh.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 9 May 2003 16:30 (twenty years ago) link

That show I described was at a place called the Czar Bar. Used to be on Division near Damen, back when that area was, uh, significantly less populated than it is at present. It was this average old neighborhood bar adorned with beer posters and the like, owned by this older polish guy that some enterprising hipster must have convinced to allow rock shows on the weekends. Mainly lots of smaller local bands played, but I remember seeing touring bands like God Is My Co-Pilot and even Beat Happening there. Liz Phair actually played there a bit when she was starting out. Anyway, the place was fairly small hence Jesus Lizard playing under an assumed name, as it could never accomodate their usual fan base. Too many people showed up anyway and it was kind of a mess. I'm pretty sure that was one of the last shows the old guy allowed there. I think it closed in like '94.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 9 May 2003 16:53 (twenty years ago) link

i remember that club. was too young to get in at the time, but i remember going past there several times. used to live just up the street, near Damen and Irving. :)

janni (janni), Friday, 9 May 2003 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

I saw them at a Chicago club called Crowbar once, it was their opening weekend or something and they wanted the Lizard. Great show, right around new years I think, just before Lash came out.
Metro had them as part of their big celebration week dealio, too. The had Helmet friday and JL Saturday with Quicksand Laughing Hyenas as the openers (not sure who opened for whom). Massive bruises but sooooo worth it.
A guy was smoking a joint near the stage and Yow says "Oh, is that a marijuana cigarette?" the guy was like, dude have some and handing to him. Yow held it with his finger and thumb, sniffed it and then flicked it to the back of the hall and said "Ooops."
The whole place busted up laughing. This illustrated a crucial point "Never let that muscular little troll touch ANYTHING you value."

Yow contributes a live version of Roger Miller's "One Dyin' & A Buryin'" to the Pine Valley Cosmonauts "Executioner's Last Songs Vols 2&3", which came out fairly recently. Very good it is too, reminds me a bit of Johnny Thunders' solo stuff.

i've been listening to the jesus lizard every day this week

'monkey trick' is such a thumper of a song. builds up to a massive, terrifying climax without you even realising it, then the last 40 seconds or so is sonic bliss for the initiated.

i love the way the band has recurring, hook-based riffs in their songs. adds dimension and focus to the vocal carnage and waywardness. fuckin tight rhythm section too.

It was released on vinyl only for Record Store Day, limited to 2000 copies and only for sale in independent stores in the USA. Precursor to the rest of the remastered (by someone from Shellac that isn't Albini I believe) reissues that will be out from September.

Haven't seen the revitalized JL. Missed em at the Cap Hill Block Party (Seattle-area summer thing) a few months back, just cuz I hate the crowds and fenced-in feeling. From Perfect Sound Forever btw:

But these guys were never meant to be The Lizard indefinitely and now with them gone forever, I can settle into the comfortable assurance that my favorite band will never disappoint or embarrass me. They will never pull a Bauhaus and reform to cash in after a slew of questionable projects fail to bring long standing success for individual band members. This ain't gonna happen because there are probably less than a few thousand hardcore Jesus Lizard fans left in North America and that number probably dwindles every year. Good. This band is what used to pass for a hip rock critic's wet dream back when music writers were expected to be more adventurous than putting all their money on the goddamn White Stripes. So I will enjoy them in happy solitude and I don't care if you think it's ridiculous posturing to champion a band based on their inaccessibility. I will tell anyone to their face that Cheap Trick are an incredible band and at their prime. THOSE guys could fill entire stadiums with hysterical teenage chicks. Big deal.

curmudgeon, Sunday, 22 November 2009 17:57 (fourteen years ago) link

The other night Yow commented on how DC was usually the pretty happening show and Baltimore was kind of dead but this tour it was completely the opposite. Said something about "Baltimore's the new LA, DC's the new San Francisco". The Baltimore crowd was nuts for 'em too, kids flying everywhere, cheering "like they're seeing Bruce Springsteen", plenty of crowd surfing. Yow spent a lot of time floating around in the audience. And it never let up, even through the 2nd encore. Towards the end of the show Yow said something like "Thank you. In all seriousness, thank you." in a kind of uncharacteristically sincere way. It was nice. The band got a hero's welcome and I think they appreciated it. Never got to see these guys the first time around, but I can't imagine the older Jesus Lizard is inferior in any way.

circa1916, Sunday, 22 November 2009 19:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Curmudgeon you are right, we need to review the press some time, maybe I am wrong. I just hate how these great bands get forgotten, it's not like everyone has to like them or send all nineties bands on some corny reunion tour, but this was a great band and they did have detractors in my neck of the woods, like, "they're hostile because they don't want to be huge rock stars" and this kind of crap. I don't see what the point is, they were a formidable band and all they focus on is the singer.

I'm glad people are enjoying the shows!

seem to recall them getting all kinds of respect in the 90s from the mags that covered indie & punk stuff, especially circa goat and liar. even the mixed reviews for the early stuff were mostly hedging on whether or not they were quite up to scratch acid's snuff. they got to be about as popular as i could ever imagine them getting, given the inbuilt obstacles, and the love as we still is still strong.

saw em at the 9:30 for goat (i think?) - amazing show and packed to the rafters. then a year or so later at the cat's cradle in NC w blues ex. even better. maybe one of the best shows i've ever seen and i only say maybe because i had so many drinks.

There was an ambulance outside of Metro after the Friday show. Someone said it was for Yow but I thought they were joking. Metro twittered on Saturday, "David Yow lives. The Jesus Lizard will play Metro as scheduled tonight. 12:51 PM Nov 28th." Anyone know what happened? The way the old little fucker exerted himself both at Pitchfork and that night, I was kind of worried he'd drop dead of a heart attack or stroke!

A bunch of my friends don't "get" J-Liz. It's taken me nearly 20 years to accept that unfortunate fact. One is even a fan of McLusky/Future of the Left. WTF!

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 3 December 2009 19:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, and not only are they just as good, they actually are BETTER than they were in the late 90s! Which is understandable, when a band gets toured ragged for so many years in a row, to return a decade plus later rejuvenated. Same thing with The Pixies on their reunion tour a few years back compared to a dismal show winter 90/91.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 3 December 2009 19:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Apparently, David was crowd-surfing during the second encore on Friday night and was dropped by the crowd, falling a good 7 feet hard to the floor. He got up and back and stage and attempted to finish but was visibly in pain and the show was ended. I guess enough people had left by the second encore to leave the crowd thinned out enough for this to happen -- a shame (also, what lame-os)

I didn't go Friday but went Saturday. He was singing from a stool for a lot of the show, but did get to prowl around a bit and even dove from the stage once or twice -- but definitely NOT the usual manic Lizard show. Still, it was bizarre and worth it just for the sight of Yow perched on that stool... Plus the band is still totally amazing. Just could not believe how awesome Mac's drum solo was at the end of the set

Or maybe it was Jesus Jones' fault, everything else is.

Part of the irony here is that Bruce was playing Baltimore the same night, to a sold-out arena. It seemed like Yow was bemused/amused at the corollary. And yes, the place was packed and people were going nuts. Shame to hear that the D.C. show was underattended.

The guy who played in between them and openers Double Dagger, can't remember his name, was on some kind of cosmic drone trip. Guitar, drumset, and sampler, with long vibrating vocall-less compositions. Perhaps a fuck you to the fans who came expecting all aggro action?
