My sister's place is literally 10 minutes from the airport. There's no traffic at 9pm on a Saturday. I'm not gonna be some no nuts "ooh sorry sir please don't be mad at me, is $50 enough to drive me a few miles? Here's my bank account # if not."

^^^^ exactly this. It doesn't take much forethought to take away somebody's opportunity to fuck you over. It looks like micromanagement, but so fucking what. xpost to surm

I don't know if it was earlier this thread or one of the other tipping threads, but I delivered food and for a $9.75 order I'd have some people demand I go back to my car to grab a quarter to give them change for a $10 (which I would calmly and politely do). So I really have no sympathy for guys who get apoplectic over it.

With Dominos in the UK you can order your Pizza online and pay online, so you don't have to hand over any money when the driver delivers it. Saves any worry about whether you are meant to tip him or not.

I am using your worlds, Friday, 20 August 2010 18:36 (thirteen years ago) link

But do you include a tip when paying online?

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 20 August 2010 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Well you pay for the whole service! So in a way, yes.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 20 August 2010 18:40 (thirteen years ago) link

some delivery sites in the States work that way too, where you input your tip online. I wanna say Quiznos does, and I believe one of the pizza delivery giants does. I don't like it so much because I'm guaranteeing a tip when the service may suck, but then again, the word "tip" does stand for "to insure promptness" so technically it's in the spirit of it, lol.

quincie, Friday, 20 August 2010 18:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I suppose, but if I do that in the US there's an option to enter a tip amount. Not that I'd order from Dominos obv, don't wanna give out that impression.

yeah they should authorize your card, but not charge it til the driver returns. so then you can quickly go in and deduct .37 from his/her tip for not telling you to have a nice night.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 20 August 2010 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

think we can agree on the following:

1. people who tip badly for no reason other than being cheap pieces of crap are disgusting savages and it's understandable why the recipient is upset
2. sometimes unexpected shiz happens that makes normally good-tipping individuals not be able to tip properly
3. regardless of why you didn't get any tip or a good tip, acting like a gorilla on cocaine over it is not professional and never acceptable, even if one can be sympathetic to their frustration.

michangelo wuz a party d00d (San Te), Friday, 20 August 2010 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

I can agree on that. I did feel bad about not tipping RIGHT UNTIL gorilla on cocaine showed itself. It's a bit frightening when someone acts that way and they know where your live-alone sister lives.

Haha I always tip dominos guys when I pay online!

Are you meant to tip people who deliver fridges? It felt kind of awkward not to: like, I have already paid for the fridge! Delivery was included in the price! On other hand you have just carried a heavy object up my stairs? So clearly I should tip? What should I tip? £20? I don't want to tip £20? Anyway while I was thinking all this they went away again.

i had a couch delivered once and i gave them both money to buy themselves a coffee. they seemed pretty happy.

oreo speed wiggum (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 20 August 2010 21:38 (thirteen years ago) link

i avoid searches like that cuz I find entire webboards devoted to it. I had an argument online with people who claimed they didn't tip, giving Mr. Pink-level defenses of it, and this one guy told a story about how they had automatic 15% gratuity added on and he argued to take it off, and the waitress gave him guf for it, he complained, and the waitress was fired. Now obviously the waitress had no business giving him guf, but the dude was proud of himself for causing potential financial duress to someone.

I told him he was a lousy piece of shit and have stayed away from such arguments since.

michangelo wuz a party d00d (San Te), Friday, 20 August 2010 22:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I have also had the tipping-for-fridge dilemma, but the speed with which the delivery men cleared off while I was wondering what to tip them suggests they were not expecting anything, since they were out of the flat in record time with not so much as a glance at me

(think we'd had to pay for delivery when we ordered it though)

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 20 August 2010 22:23 (thirteen years ago) link

AND I have also had the pre-booked taxi costing more than the agreed price. I'd been told 30 on the phone and was going to give him 35, he said 35 so I considered just giving him 35 same as before, but in the end I think I rounded up a couple more pounds - probably below 10% but eh

think I checked the price when I got in but I was going a long way into the middle of nowhere on like a Tuesday night, so I thought it might take a while to find another driver willing to go that far. I suppose he'd come out from the middle of nowhere place, so he wouldn't have wanted to go home without a fare, so I could maybe have made more fuss, but how much fuss do you want to make as a single woman before getting into the fuss recipient's car to go through a lot of dark country roads?

I gave the two guys who delivered us a fridge twenty bucks to split. They were pleasantly surprised to get a tip, but things are a little different here than in bigger cities, I think.

Oh, I think she had plenty of business giving him guff.

We tipped the guys who delivered and assembled our bed and dresser. I think we gave them $10 each for three of them. I figure "delivery fee" goes to the store, not the delivery guys, plus it was hot and plus I'm always so grateful for not having to carry heavy things up steps I am very happy to tip for the service.

Jenny, Friday, 20 August 2010 23:25 (thirteen years ago) link

if I have a job that's better than the job of the person providing me with a tippable service then I think it's incumbent on me to tip that guy as well as I reasonably can without looking like a giant nuts-flexing asshole about it. this is a more religious than practical way of thinking about it but hey guess what that is how I am like as a person so it measures up. the only time I intentionally didn't tip somebody well was this cabbie who dropped me off two blocks before my destination because he didn't feel like locating the exact (easy, midtown). he yelled at me but fuckin A dude if I wanted to walk I wouldn't get in a cab.

tipping is an opportunity to be cool to another person and that is a blessing in this world imo and that is how I think of it, the end.

I tipped when I got a new bed - they brought it right into the bedroom, put it exactly where I wanted it, and affixed the headboard, so there was plenty of time to think about these things

and I did sort of mean to tip for the fridge (actually a dishwasher) too, if those guys had stopped in my flat for more than 5 seconds instead of just dumping it in the hall and leaving immediately they would've been tipped - surely anyone who thought they might/should be tipped would hang around for a moment to see if wallets were reached for? Like, just the time required to say "hi, here is your dishwasher" would have been enough

Barista Tipping: An Insider'z Guide

Please note: None of this applies to Starbucks. That is a completely different world. Those baristas generally make a living wage and have health insurance (though in exchange they have to deal with shitty coffee, music from corporate, automated machines, and orders like "16 oz white chocolate mocha half caff one third foam double syrup in a 20 oz cup")

It is generally considered customary to tip a dollar for a drink that involves espresso. It's also cool if you want to tip because you're going to be there all day, though honestly, if you even have this thought in the first place, I don't feel there's any need for you to pay for your presence, as you're probably not the kind of jerk that makes me wish you'd go home.

Reasons it's customary to tip:

Unless you're talking about Stumptown, Intellegensia, Four Barrel, Blue Bottle, etc. most independent coffee shops pay below minimum wage. For instance, someone working at my shop 35 hours a week (above average), with tips, makes about $15k a year. This is without any paid time off, sick leave, insurance, or benefits of any kind. My hourly pays for rent and utilities only (both of which are pretty cheap, as I live with four people.) I pay for the entire rest of my life with tips.

In order to make good espresso drinks with a manual machine, you really have to give a shit. This includes doing things like putting 30 lbs. of pressure into your tamp, which can really fuck up your wrist if you do it 5 days a week. You also have to pay really close attention to the milk, because it has to be hot enough to be a hot drink, but if it gets too hot (like, 1 second too hot), it will scald and taste awful. It takes time, practice, and care. I've been making espresso every single day (I go in and make myself a latte on days off) for something like 4 months now, and my espresso is just okay.

Now, I'm not trying to be a martyr here, I've actually got a setup where I can make this work pretty comfortably, and I'm not really complaining. But I have co-workers who will not eat that day if tips were bad because the money has to go into other living expenses.

Mind, I fucking hate the whole tipping system, and think it should be illegal to pay less than minimum for any reason, but not tipping people who depend on it is like taking out your anger at Citibank by punching their janitors.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 23:14 (thirteen years ago) link

FYI, if you're in the US, your employer is probably violating the Fair Labor Standards Act by not paying you minimum wage. Generally, employees who pool tips in a counter tip jar are not considered tipped employees for the purposes of the FLSA. As such, your employer must pay you your state's hourly minimum wage.

That's not an argument against tipping you, btw. I am pro-barrista tipping. Just letting you know you might be getting the shaft, wage and hour-wise.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 23:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks, though I almost always work solo and thus the tips aren't pooled. Also my employer is a nice 68-year-old guy who really does do what he can for employees, and if he were sanctioned really in any way, the place would shut down and none of us would have jobs. This is just how this industry works in most cities.

So there's me, an Australian who does not exist in a tipping culture, in a South African hotel paying the bill, and the woman says 'do you want to pay the tip with cash or by credit card?' I don't think I correctly formulated a response to that.

10-15% in Australia? That's crazy, the going rate is whatever 5c coins you receive in change and feel like dumping in the venue's shrapnel jar.

kelpolaris, Friday, 4 March 2011 23:42 (thirteen years ago) link

That's a brillint link Ned, very useful, but I agree with Jedmond in that tipping just isn't done here unless the food/service is exceptional.

Crazy high, we just don't tip. The Australian minimum wage is $15, and most adult hospitality staff will earn a fair chunk more than that.
