"18 Hours of Love" seems to be their single and is quite excellent. "Mehu Moments" is v great, too.

it reminds me of, like, a nighttime counterpart to "Get Ready To Fly" by Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve ("Mehu Moments", I mean)

The only thing I've heard is the song 18 Hours on the Smalltown Supersound comp but that definitely seemed relevant to my interests. Especially if the rest of it sounds like Hooterville Trolley (the artist that BTWS edit is an edit of)

Everywhere I look for this CD online it is like $17 :( I am going to have my local Philly rekkid shop order it in.

Unless it's unclear, the "K" and "P" in the band are Timo Kaukolampi and Tuomo Puranen, formerly of Op:l Bastards, who also collaborated with Annie and played in her live band (which explains her guest vocals on "Pockets"). They have two drummers, one who used to play with (among many others) Pekka Pohjola, and the other one drums in Aavikko and Circle. I guess the music scene in here is pretty small...

I guess I could do it... Maybe if we make a trade and you send me something back? Though you can't get it in the record stores here for any cheaper than the $17 you mentioned, CDs are pretty expensive in here.

and also, Stevie's a combination of everything I get rly, rly giddy about (Krautrock/motorik, fuzzdrone/Spacemen 3, really good electronic music) sums up most of my own "rly rly giddy" buttons

wow, "18 hours of love" is great! drumming/percussion's strongly reminiscent of circle, so it makes sense that tomi leppanen's in the band, but i'm not familiar w/ any of the other members or their pedigrees. was prepared to harrumph at stevie D's spacemen 3 comparison (cuz spacemen 3 comparisons rarely make sense to me), but i can sort of see it here. abstraction, repetition, focus & propulsion. liking "elephant man" & "mehu moments", too, though they're less strange & surprising. annie vocal mix of "pockets" almost sounds like a different band, disco element is so pronounced, but it's wonderful, so no complaints. would love to see these people live.

Yes, sounds rad. I see Timo Kaukolampi was in Motiivi: Tuntematon too, and they did one of my favourite Kompakt 12"s.

This sounds like "bands that sound like Spacemen 3" but I don't think it sounds like Spacemen 3. It's kind of like a better actualised version of 120 Days.

yeah, doesn't sound anything like spacemen 3, not at all. but the comparison still makes sense to me, associatively. as in, there's more of what i enjoy abt spacemen 3 in "18 hours of love" than in in anything the (more formally spacemen 3-like) black angels ever did.

Right, it's more elemental. You can tell this band probably really likes "Big City"

Yeah, this leans more towards the Sonic Boom/synthesizer side of Spacemen 3, which is the side that I definitely like better (as opposed to the endless guitar rock side I think is done to death) which makes me more predisposed towards them, in that I think they capture the spirit of what I like about S3 (as opposed to the more rock Black Angels)

Just listened to a couple of bits of this. Was getting a Hawkwind-ish vibe from '18 Hrs of Love' what with the spacey shit wedded to that Glitter Band schaffel stomp. Kind of sounded like Circle trying to play 'Doctorin' The Tardis'?

love spacemen 3's rock stuff and still regularly listen to the sound of confusion (nearly 25 years down the line), but yeah, i'm rarely interested in bands that recycle those sounds/ideas. not to fault the black angels specifically, but when their first record came out, a number of reviews made the comparison. i can see why spacemen 3 might be a cool/useful touchstone for that kind of fuzzy, droney guitar rock, but i always end up feeling conned.

My "does it sounds like Spacemen 3 test" is something along the lines of "Is there a VCS3 onstage? No? Then it is not like Spacemen 3. Kindly STFU." I really wish there were another go-to reference point for "bands that like the Velvets and the Stooges and play troglodyte one-chord rock in a hypnotic fashion" so people stop using Spacemen 3 as that reference point. Because I'm always disappointed.

Actually, I really do wonder if these days, if I heard Spacemen3 for the first time, if they would still be "my favourite band ever" but I think we already had a thread on that.

I'm been trying to get my teeth into this for a few weeks and it's not happening yet. Looks good on paper and has all the right moving parts but I don't know I'm not sure there's any there there. The Beak> comparison upthread is about right I think...another impeccably influenced record I dug at first but seemed to kind of lack character or something over the long haul? I'm just finding it kind of inoffensive, in the wrong way.

I dunno for me the half-dozen or so krauty/spacey tracks on the new Fall record are better at scratching this itch

hearing some: Appliance, Silver Bullit/Citizen Bird, Death in Vegas. Bit looser, fizzier, bubblier than all these though. Liking it quite a bit.

I forgot about Appliance. But then I never really liked them even though they should've pushed all my buttons. I was not quite sure whether this might be in the same category or not, but every so often it loosens up - current case in point: the rockout finale of "Pockets" - and I think, yes, this-band-is-awesome.

But if people find this is not pushing their Finnish kraut buttons sufficiently, check out Shogun Kunitoki instead (only if you'd like it more ramshackle, more live, more analogue, less dancey)

listening right now - there's definitely something rad about it - thought it'd just be str8-up kraut but there's a cool pop vibe - Mehu Moments and Labirynth especially kickin' - second half to look forward to

Not a fantastic album, but an enjoyable one - it's also exactly the right length.

Optimo Espacio remix of "18 Hours (Of Love)" is pretty epic, as can be heard on Ivan Smagghe's terrific RA Podcast.

This album is still amazing. The drums are so, so fucking good; I hope they release more material this year.
