I need to check the Boston threads for restaurant suggestions.

main thread we've been using lately is this one: Boston -- Classic or Dirty Water?

eight months pass...

I like this thread more, and have been finding it useful in preparing for my forthcoming trip - to Boston.

ooh, when?

arriving - tomorrow. I am my beloved's plus one at a spelling bee for grown ups.

although I am hoping that due to some mix up she will be competing against ten year olds.

WELCOME!!!

haha awesome

we have Wagamama now, it's only a couple of steps until we teleport into the UK

Dreaded Burrito Gang (DJP), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 17:36 (thirteen years ago) link

ho ho, next thing you will have bars where you don't need to tip.

The New Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 17:38 (thirteen years ago) link

If there is anything amazing happening in Boston over the next few days, let me know. I am kind of tempted by either Fiery Furnaces or Holly Golightly on Saturday, but we will probably just stuff our faces in the North End or something.

The New Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

hmm, by Saturday I'm going to be off in the woods getting shitfaced, so I dunno what's going on this weekend

Dreaded Burrito Gang (DJP), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link

it turned out that I just spent my time eating food. Nom nom nom.

My beloved's team came second in the spelling bee, after failing to correctly spell "tatterdemalion".

and hi iatee, welcome to my hood

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 May 2011 13:41 (thirteen years ago) link

that looks good and cheap but google says it's 1.5 miles and I'm not sure I can convince the girl to walk that far before eating. is there a bus that goes down mass ave and then cambridge st?

iatee, Friday, 13 May 2011 13:52 (thirteen years ago) link

thanks cad, I've actually never been here before! taking any cambridge suggestions, we were just gonna wander around. (friend is gonna give us the pro tour sat/sun but works today)

iatee, Friday, 13 May 2011 13:56 (thirteen years ago) link

re: bus i don't think so. if you cut over to beacon st. there may be a bus that goes down to inman but not sure what the frequency of that would even be.

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 May 2011 14:01 (thirteen years ago) link

weekday brunch is sadly infrequent around here :(

since you've got a beautiful day you could definitely go down and walk along the river and stuff. in harvard two places--shay's and charlie's kitchen have good outdoor areas for getting a beer or some food.

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 May 2011 14:04 (thirteen years ago) link

is shay's any good, CAD? I've never been. There's a great, cheap, weekend brunch at Gaslight but it's a bit of a hike – but it's the only way I'll ever be able to afford getting inside that place.

ignore the man behind the parentheses (remy bean), Friday, 13 May 2011 14:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Gaslight? Where's that?

Yeah weekday brunch is tricky.

OHHHH! Hop the train to Kendall and go to The Friendly Toast! They have great food and it's cheap. The service is shit but it's worth it. There is brunchy stuff on the menu that is available all the time.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 13 May 2011 14:28 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaha, the service is slow more than shit, and that should be much less of a factor on a weekday. friendly toast is still the #1 place i would recommend in the boston metropolitan area. and yeah, very close to the kendall T

shay's is amazing but not really because of any "features" it has--same six beers on tap, same three guys working the bar, super cozy and mellow atmosphere, etc. it's just cool because it never changes and because you can kick it on the patio or the steps in good weather.

walked to s&s (stuffed for the day) then MIT and now we're on a patch of grass next to the Charles. so far so good! prob gonna head back to harvard square after. such a nice day.

Enjoy!

two months pass...

Tomorrow I'm going to be staying near the Lechmere T in a strange-looking Holiday Inn right on a highway. I'll get there around 7pm. Is there an East Cambridge scene?!... any nice/friendly area I can walk to around there just to check it out/have a couple of drinks and some food, or should I get the bus to Cambridge proper if I want to do that?

ljubljana, Sunday, 31 July 2011 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

you're about a 1/2 mile from a bar called atwood's that i've never been to but have heard good stuff about. you're also about a mile from kendall square which has a bunch of bars and stuff.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 31 July 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

Not the greatest area of town, you'd probably want to go to Central, Harvard or Inman for a wider range of culinary choices. Within a mile of your hotel, my favorite place is Atwoods.

Ljub - how long you in town for?

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

Just one night. Mail me if you're free to fap! Guess I could go anywhere central-ish from airport and then head for the hotel after.

ljubljana, Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

and thanks for reccs all.

ljubljana, Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

go to harvard square for cheap walky-aroundy foodstuff. what're you in the mood for?

remy bean, Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

Just somewhere I can enjoy walking and taking in what's around - more walking and dropping in places for a drink than sitting in one place, not too bothered about type of food.

ljubljana, Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

So sounds ideal!

ljubljana, Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

Aw L, sadly I'm not free tonight. I hope you do have a nice time though. Everyone's recs here are good. Harvard Sq. would probably be the most interesting since you only have one night. :)

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Monday, 1 August 2011 10:38 (twelve years ago) link

I will head to Harvard Square. I'm getting the overnight regional back to DC, because I need a v late flight back (evening thing to go to) and none exist, and was being a cheapskate about an extra hotel night, and anyway wanted to try the train. No berths on that train, so got a bus class seat and plan on tipping it right back and deploying blanket. Is this foolish? Costs about the same as a flight. Suspect I would have been fine 10 years ago doing that but now....

two years pass...

I'm gonna be there this afternoon/tonight for a friend's art show, near Boston Common? I have lived in mass a year now and this is the first time I been to Boston.

What are some fun ways to kill the afternoon? I like record stores, book stores, walking, art. I know driving there sucks, but any parking recs? Also I guess I might need a coffee shop to get an hour or so of work done...

Thanks!

maybe/whatever/so what/boring (admrl), Friday, 11 July 2014 14:14 (nine years ago) link

if you can live w/paying for parking, use the boston common underground garage imo. from there you can walk through the public garden and get to newbury st., which will have what's left of our book stores and record stores. trident books and raven used books are both worth poking around in. newbury comics is the only record store around there (actually there might still be one used record store across mass ave. near boylston, i haven't been over there recently).

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 July 2014 14:32 (nine years ago) link

Thanks. Yeah, I'm fine w/paying, so long as it isn't extortionate. I might check out the ICA too, but maybe it's not close at all? I have no idea of the size/orientation of this city.

maybe/whatever/so what/boring (admrl), Friday, 11 July 2014 14:58 (nine years ago) link

ICA moved to the waterfront area, it's not very close to that stuff anymore

ciderpress, Friday, 11 July 2014 15:00 (nine years ago) link

yeah ica is not close, if you park where i recommended you could take the red line from park st. to south station and either grab the silver line or walk abt 15 minutes, not sure if that all fits into your schedule.

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 July 2014 15:02 (nine years ago) link

It does! Awesome.

maybe/whatever/so what/boring (admrl), Friday, 11 July 2014 15:09 (nine years ago) link

CAD's got it covered, nothing to add other than WELCOME and HAVE FUN

though if you decide to walk from South Station and you're going down Congress St, consider leaving aside some time to pop into Drink (348 Congress, basement level underneath Sportello; opens at 4 PM)

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Friday, 11 July 2014 15:57 (nine years ago) link

^^that is some strong advice, especially if you pop in between 4 and 5. you'll have the bartenders full attention and it's pretty relaxed.

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 July 2014 16:06 (nine years ago) link

So I guess I kinda washed up in Beacon Hill? There was parking and a grabbed it and here I am. Seems fancy, feel like I'm in some posh part of London. Lots of dogs being walked and I feel underdressed.

maybe/whatever/so what/boring (admrl), Friday, 11 July 2014 20:50 (nine years ago) link

Beacon Hill is one of the fanciest rat warrens you'll ever see
