Yeah, I've read through Vol. 11 of the trade paperback collections. Always looking forward to new issues.

Very encouraging trailer, love the McCloud-esque vibe of the horseback bit. Given that Darabont worked with the entire film crew from The Shield whilst making The Mist I bet he's got a pretty tight idea of how to direct this kind of thing too.

two weeks pass...

Can't wait for this. I've purposefully avoided the comics to avoid spoilers. Hopefully it lasts at least 3-4 seasons. Last I checked season 2 wasn't guaranteed yet, so fingers crossed.

musicfanatic, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 18:20 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm really really hyped about this; willing to give it four episodes to warm up before leveling criticism

Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 18:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Ha ha, yeah. I'm assuming it's going to be good for some reason. Probably should temper my expectations a bit.

musicfanatic, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link

hate the comic, but this seems like it'll be a big improvement

the parking garage has more facebook followers than my band (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 18:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I also hate the comic but somehow feel this will be good also.

also HATE the comic but am anticipating this

balls, Thursday, 14 October 2010 02:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Why do people hate the comic but expect this to be good? Should I not even ask?

trishyb, Thursday, 14 October 2010 04:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Like, what is it that's crap about the comic but makes you think this will be good telly?

trishyb, Thursday, 14 October 2010 04:58 (thirteen years ago) link

was going to ask

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:01 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the comic actually; not sure why everyone's agin it.
But i read the first fifty-five issues in one sitting, so...

Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:03 (thirteen years ago) link

55 issues? I assumed it was a limited run kind of thing. Is it still going? Would it provide enough material for several seasons worth of stories? I don't really want to wikipedia it in case of spoilers.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I really meant to ask, "does it end?" as in "is this series going to be 5 or so seasons of awesome shit all heading towards a conclusion or is it just going to dither on and on?"

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:07 (thirteen years ago) link

The comic's up to 76 or so issues now, and is intended to be open-ended.

buildings with goats on the roof (James Morrison), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link

walking dead comics r good, tv show might be okay if made well. one of the great things about the comic was the level of ongoing tension, even if the immediate conflict did not involve da scary zombies. it is a dark future.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:19 (thirteen years ago) link

one of the great things about the book is that it's continuously in motion. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that no one is safe; major characters die regularly. Stories don't settle into any one setting for too very long.

Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:25 (thirteen years ago) link

and yeah, there's enough material for five seasons, easy. Kirkman more or less wrote them in "seasons" anyway; his stuff is very storyboardy.

Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:26 (thirteen years ago) link

still, very curious to see how closely this hews to the comic. Anybody know what the word is on Kirkman's involvement/faithfulness to the comic storyline?

Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:27 (thirteen years ago) link

didn't find the comic particularly amazing, just seemed very standard zombie storyline. artwork was average, i thought. later eps were improved though.

have no idea what the tv series will be like, but i don't recall any other zombie tv/series other than the big brother feature (which i liked), so this might be rather refreshing as opposed to yet another full on zombie flick.

F-Unit (Ste), Thursday, 14 October 2010 10:48 (thirteen years ago) link

The admittedly small number of issues I read didn't seem to either add anything significant to zombie mythology or have particularly interesting characters.

A brownish area with points (chap), Thursday, 14 October 2010 11:02 (thirteen years ago) link

But I will certainly watch the first couple of eps at least.

A brownish area with points (chap), Thursday, 14 October 2010 11:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I read thar his rationale is not so much to add to the mythology (originally it was going to be set in the public domain world of Romero's first Dead film) as to fill in the viewer's desire to know what happens NEXT, and then NEXT, and then NEXT--how peoploe keep on living in the world post-zombie apocalypse, as opposed to the few days/weeks that a film can show.

buildings with goats on the roof (James Morrison), Thursday, 14 October 2010 11:44 (thirteen years ago) link

zombie apocalypse is a great canvas for right wing/nra/libertarian types to express their i-told-you-so-liberal-faggits wish fullment on and i thought the books veered close to this territory too often for my reading comfort.

MAX NOT FOR MOD (Roberto Spiralli), Thursday, 14 October 2010 12:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I really meant to ask, "does it end?" as in "is this series going to be 5 or so seasons of awesome shit all heading towards a conclusion or is it just going to dither on and on?"

This is my fear about the show as well...I know the comic goes on forever, shows like this don't seem to work when they are completely open ended and aren't headed towards any type of conclusion.

romoing my damn eyes (Nicole), Thursday, 14 October 2010 12:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, what makes the comic (and in turn the show) so risky is that there is no conclusion to head toward. Most of the planet is dead or undead. What resolution could possibly occur? The only thing I can think of is some sort of "the children offer hope for the future" ending, because what else can they do?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Why do people hate the comic but expect this to be good? Should I not even ask?

because i'm pretty sure kirkman has no idea how human relationships work, and everything reads like teenage melodrama. any writer would be an improvement.

Gnawing out your own brains in protest at terrible television is the new "I'm mad as hell and..."

fill in the viewer's desire to know what happens NEXT, and then NEXT, and then NEXT--how peoploe keep on living in the world post-zombie apocalypse, as opposed to the few days/weeks that a film can show.

If it does this at all well, then I will love it. I am fascinated by just how people are supposed to get by and live their lives under extreme circumstances, and the accommodations they have to make in order to have any order at all. What kind of barter springs up? What turns out to be useful? That kind of thing.

nothing in the show makes any sense. there are totally mountains in america. places where NOBODY could get to you. places where you could see people coming a mile away. but, in general, not going to the fancy neighborhoods to make camp makes less than no sense. they always have the best stuff.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 April 2018 20:40 (six years ago) link

beyond that though, the last two seasons are all about the torture of having negan around forever instead of killing him immediately which is what any sensible person would have done. they had tons of opportunities to kill him and its just kind of cruel to prolong the badness for that long. it's just dumb. it is kinda like the writers are writing the show for a really dumb audience and it wasn't like that when the show was worth watching. i mean everyone still did lots of dumb shit back then but people tend to do a lot of dumb shit. so, it made more sense then.

The show might as well be a video game at this point. A really dreary, video game.

Yerac, Friday, 6 April 2018 01:31 (six years ago) link

i liked this show but it's definitely just going by the numbers at this point and it seems that they're just content to have a zombie television series. i'm looking forward to potential expansion beyond the influences of the show and i hope it doesn't doesn't descend into utterly lame plot devices.

Fear The Walking Dead is so much better than its parent show now it's not even funny.

groovypanda, Thursday, 3 May 2018 08:04 (five years ago) link

It's a little funny, because the only thing I've heard about that one is that it's not very good, either.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 May 2018 12:39 (five years ago) link

When exactly did Fear the Walking Dead get better? I bailed at episode 1 of season 3.

Yerac, Thursday, 3 May 2018 12:55 (five years ago) link

Episode 2 onwards

groovypanda, Thursday, 3 May 2018 13:32 (five years ago) link

First two seasons were pretty ropey but season 3 was a marked improvement and season 4 has been pretty good so far.

It's no Wire obviously but is much, much better than TWD and actually has some characters I care about.

groovypanda, Thursday, 3 May 2018 13:35 (five years ago) link

i got through the first season and maybe watched one or two of season two and i'd had it.

scott seward, Thursday, 3 May 2018 13:35 (five years ago) link

This season has been interesting as there's a couple of new characters and also one from TWD.

groovypanda, Thursday, 3 May 2018 13:37 (five years ago) link

rufus and i were talking about how sad it was on the walking dead when the zombies become annoyances like mosquitoes and were no longer scary and how this basically started in season 7. just another reason why the show is so sad now.

i mean everyone still alive is good at killing them and living with them but still...they are so benign.

scott seward, Thursday, 3 May 2018 13:41 (five years ago) link

I've always thought that was one of the best takes on zombies. The Tom Savini remake of "Night of the Living Dead" I want to say even makes a big point that the zombies are easy to outrun. That's the genius of the slow zombie model: it's stupid decisions and other people that often pose the biggest problems. This show messed up by making everyone a bunch of dumb mopes seemingly unable to leave their five square miles of land.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 May 2018 13:44 (five years ago) link

I hated the characters/casting on Fear TWD (based on the first two seasons). Did everyone die? Is that why it became better?

Yerac, Thursday, 3 May 2018 14:07 (five years ago) link

There's not many of the original cast left now, yes.

groovypanda, Thursday, 3 May 2018 20:02 (five years ago) link

Does FEAR still have the guy with the amazing voice? the one whose boat they escaped on at the end of S1?

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Friday, 4 May 2018 00:28 (five years ago) link

Oh yeah, that guy was the only character I liked. ^^^

Yerac, Friday, 4 May 2018 00:44 (five years ago) link

Same here.

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Friday, 4 May 2018 02:47 (five years ago) link

He's still in the show.

Vernon Locke, Friday, 4 May 2018 05:59 (five years ago) link

This show messed up by making everyone a bunch of dumb mopes seemingly unable to leave their five square miles of land.

you can basically track the demise of the show to that episode when eugene revealed he was lying about the zombie cure. losing all hope and descending into violent neighbourhood squabbles is probably what would really happen (if they didn’t all just neck themselves — honestly who wouldn’t after all they’ve been through) and certainly cheaper to produce, but it’s remarkably boring television.

karl wallogina (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 11:13 (five years ago) link

They spend way too long shooting so many bullets and panning across sweaty faces and not enough time having normal conversations that would clear up a lot of issues.

Yerac, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 13:59 (five years ago) link

its so artless now. there is nothing cool to look at. everyone just stands around not saying anything. my fave characters have become pointless. and i figure they'll just keep making it as long as it makes money. you would think everyone in it would be so tired of doing it. unless they are all becoming insanely rich off of it.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 14:27 (five years ago) link

I think they're managing to get by

Rick Grimes has been a main character on The Walking Dead since the very beginning and while that makes Andrew Lincoln one of the top-billed cast members on the show, as of the show's sixth season Lincoln has only made around $92,000 per episode. With each episode taking around eight days to film, Lincoln's total season income would come to just under $1.5 million. However, recent reports have indicated that Lincoln may have received a raise for seasons seven and eight, bringing him to around $618,000 per episode and up to par with other cable series stars.

five months pass...

I was about to watch the last episode from last season and then pick up with the new season. From reading reviews though, this seems like a bad idea and I should just really let it go.

Yerac, Monday, 5 November 2018 13:05 (five years ago) link

I stopped watching years ago but from what hear it really does seem like this show is just a bunch of delaying until they can dramatically kill off a character from season one or two.

I don't think I've watched much of this since around season 2, but apparently it's begun its final season? Weirdly curious about how a presumably endless narrative ends. I wonder if they'll just pull a "The Birds" and have all the zombies just die (again) and end on a "what now?" note.

Never watched it but I'm going to guess that it finishes similar to the big 'lol' moment at the end of The Mist, and the main character looks at the camera breaking the fourth wall with an 'oops, waddya gonna do' shrug.
