it still exists?? what ever happened to everybody calling it boring, tho?

oohhh weennnddddyyy weennnddyy what went wrrrooonnnnggg (kelpolaris), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:04 (thirteen years ago) link

fader's front of book is pretty take it or leave it & their 'reviews' sort of section is oftentimes good but sometimes it carries over a bit too much of that voice that they have on their blog -- "we're listening to this in the office and talking to each other and don't know much about it but it's cool!!!!" -- but i usually find the feature writing to be really good & the artists they cover personally align w/ my own tastes so

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Apparently people stopped calling it boring the same time they stopped buying it altogether. xp

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:06 (thirteen years ago) link

well iirc they solicited reader donations not too long ago

"but the tendency was to edit writers' personality right out of them."

it definitely read like it!

I get sent Decibel in the mail, which is always fun. The new issue with Iron Maiden on the cover seems to be missing Scott's noise column, but looks like there a new columns about vinyl releases and about new albums my metal bands with women singers, ha. (Didn't get sent any issues for a year and a half since moving to Texas, but they mysteriously started coming again last month, weird.) And for some reason I also get Relix; I think what happened is that I was getting Paste sent to me because they wanted me to write for them (which I never did), and when they folded they started sending out Relix to subscribers instead. Relix is less horrible than I would have guessed, to be honest, but it definitely goes into the recylcying bin a lot quicker than, say, Texas Highways, much less Cooking Light. (Latter was an Xmas present from my inlaws, and always has a couple recipes worth trying.)

i always buy the mags i'm in!

I used to, but I am jaded now.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:07 (thirteen years ago) link

paste also stopped paying their freelancers in order to keep putting out new issues. always a smart business plan.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:07 (thirteen years ago) link

^ yeah, just heard about that. Shitty.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:08 (thirteen years ago) link

xp meant "there ARE new columns about vinyl releases and about new albums BY metal bands with women singers"

xhuxk, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:08 (thirteen years ago) link

anyone ever read brn (beyond race...magazine? kinda bizarre title, no?)?? flipping thru it at barnes & nobz today and an advert says you can suscribe for...whatever you want! (a la radiohead's in rainbows). you gotta follow the link to the website... i go there, search for 20 minutes, and find no avail. WHO THEY TRYIN 2 FOOL

looool that's an abomination

i'll have to flip through a Fader next time I'm in the bookstore -- at least to check out the features

markers, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:17 (thirteen years ago) link

xp Really? Excellent. I'll look closer for it, next time I'm in the bathroom.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:18 (thirteen years ago) link

i realize "free content" is the wave of the future when it comes to staying in business for another sad few months, but shouldn't you advertise it as such when you assign the pieces?

strongohulkingtonsghost, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Apparently Paste is following the late-period Creem template, when it comes to freelancer pay.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:20 (thirteen years ago) link

But at least Creem back then had the courtesy to file Chapter 11 first, before they made not paying freelancers official.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:21 (thirteen years ago) link

in all honesty, does anyone here actually like paste? i have friends who recommend me the mag, but all i read online is that they veer heavily towards adult-folk-contemporary-alternative (bon iver, etc, bullshit). not big on metal, but that's far too down the spectrum for me tambien.

Paste = "Morning Becomes Eclectic" in print.

It's been a snore from day one.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Have all you Decibel subscribers already received the new issue (Iron Maiden cover)? I'm still looking for it.

Brad C., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:24 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah I got it a few days ago

Sarge, always keeping it positive

I wonder how much they could've saved if they didn't bother including the stupid cd every issue. Does anyone know how much the labels paid to have their artists featured?

I would subscribe to The Wire if it didn't cost so much for ppl living in the US

skyscraper sucked, and i say this as someone who wrote for it. blender was fun when it started and was all over the place w/ reviews.

also, i'm way late in saying this, but: CONGRATS COWBELL JESS

"i always buy the mags i'm in!"

blech

Gives you access to a bunch of back issues too.

Neggin' you crapative (NickB), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 21:28 (thirteen years ago) link

i heard the wire doesn't send those.

I get 'em (physical and digital). But I've been contributing since 2002 and have written something like a half dozen cover stories (and two others that I think should have been - still kinda chaps my ass they chose Mark Stewart over Bill Dixon). I don't know if less frequent contributors get free physical copies. I suspect not.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 21:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Paste's original tagline was, "Rock'n'roll: It's not just for kids anymore." I wrote in my updated piece: In its February 2010 issue, the cover story was the contentious "Is Indie Dead?" The piece was disappointing, and the conclusion seemed to be sort of an update of their editorial statement. Yes, indie is dead, and they seem to want to align themselves more towards the Rolling Stone market. Subsequent issues focused on prime time TV, film directors, festival guides, and Tilda Swinton. Rock 'n' roll, it's not for Paste readers anymore.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 22:21 (thirteen years ago) link

My piece on magazines was from 2006, before Blender and Harp folded. What's next to go? I'd guess Filter or Paste.
― Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Maybe I should stop predictions. I hate for any magazine to go, really.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 22:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Less than 24 hours and you killed Paste. Can you predict something awful about Perez Hilton next?

miccio kurihara (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 22:26 (thirteen years ago) link

i still love tape op, though not as much as i used to. it certainly helps to be a recording geek, but you don't have to be, as a lot of the band and producer and engineer interviews can be quite revealing even in non-geeky areas. it also helps to be a fan of either indie or classic rock. but, that all said, it's a very well done zine, and you can subscribe to the print version for free, which is a nice touch.

Whatever happened to URB, it had hip-hop and dance in it.

They have a site, but I haven't seen a print issue in ages. I guess they are strictly digital. I like their way of thinking, though.

The Fader is published by a PR/marketing agency, doncha know.

And The Fader and Pitchfork have some kind of strategic partnership. Which could mean anything. Probably advertising/marketing pooling, but who knows these days. Ah, well.

jaybabcock, Thursday, 2 September 2010 01:14 (thirteen years ago) link

The Fader and RCRD.LBL are two arms of the same agency, but whatever. I like about 75% of what both of them are pushing.

i don't even buy magazines anymore. and i've never lived without them in my life! i dunno, i'm busy. plus, there aren't any good sources near me for magazines. no borders or newsstand kinda place. so i do without. the book store around the corner carries ugly things though. which is really nice of them. the turn it up in brattleboro sells mojo and a couple of others. but i never get them. mojo covers never captivate me any more! they used to have great covers.

scott seward, Thursday, 2 September 2010 01:36 (thirteen years ago) link

No matter who publishes it, I have seen some interesting pieces on dancehall and South African music and slightly obscure US rappers in Fader. Things I wouldn't see in any other Us publication available on newstands.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 2 September 2010 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link

United States that it is, and not in US magazine either (is it still published?).
