Mark s, why does your mother call you mark s? Does she have another son called Mark, so she has to somehow make distinctions between you?

There are people at the fringe of most political or philosophical or intellectual movements who see it as their bounden duty to free the world of error (defined as disagreement with any view held by themselves). Such people can loosely be called 'fundamentalists'. Whether Christian, Marxist, Thatcherist, chauvinist, feminist, leftist, rightist or any combination or all or none of the above, they are all equally arrogant, narrow-minded, bloody-minded, self-righteous, self-delighted, precious, obsessive and boring and to be beaten off with water-cannon if they approach you. They should never under any circumstances be allowed to run any organisation, including (especially) a country.

My old boss was like that. he had this unnering knack for working out how to wind people up. I wound up going back to & taking over thee family business, b/c I got really close to beating him hard 'till he dropped one day, and that just doesn't do, I think. People like that are DUD.

i thought this thread was going to be about trolls that live under bridges :(

minna (minna), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

trolls who live under bridges are like the king-hell originators of exactly this behavior! "before you cross you have to [impossible task]! and you smell!" jack: "arrrrrggghh!" troll: "heh heh" In the stories it seems like jack always outwits them somehow though. i mean the best way of dealing w/it you would LAUGH IN THEIR FACE, but jack's road always had to go right over THAT bridge....

All me and my brothers and sisters did growing up was poke each others' Achilles heels bcz we lived out in the country and had nothing else to do but argue about who got to play Dragon Warrior next and for how long.

Real-life trolling = used to happen to me often with the son of Robert Lowell, who appears to mostly hang out in bars and try to argue with people about socialism (he once called me a racist for saying that, while I admired a lot of Scandinavian social-democrat type governments, they did seem to be having a little trouble adjusting to immigration)

nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 14:24 (fifteen years ago) link

^^ that was kind of idiotic, really, in that I said "yeah, the one thing that suddenly makes their commitment waver is immigration," so Lowell goes "oh, see, so you're just a racist then." !!

abstract
In two online studies (total N = 1215), respondents completed personality inventories and a survey of
their Internet commenting styles. Overall, strong positive associations emerged among online comment-
ing frequency, trolling enjoyment, and troll identity, pointing to a common construct underlying the
measures. Both studies revealed similar patterns of relations between trolling and the Dark Tetrad of
personality: trolling correlated positively with sadism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism, using both
enjoyment ratings and identity scores. Of all personality measures, sadism showed the most robust
associations with trolling and, importantly, the relationship was specific to trolling behavior. Enjoyment
of other online activities, such as chatting and debating, was unrelated to sadism. Thus cyber-trolling
appears to be an Internet manifestation of everyday sadism.
