i don't know the answer to that, but i always thought their early rhythm section [Jeff Ament (b), and Jack Irons (dr)] was the best thing PJ had going, if not one of the best in the biz

Question for Viceroy: If we post a 2 disc comp, can we just post one long list or do we have to break it up into 2 80-minute lists? The reason I ask is that I can't easily fit the songs on 2 CDs in the order I have them (ie, chronological). Do I have to rearrange them or it is ok to just post the whole thing as one list? I probably should have asked in the original thread but I notice everyone's posting CD1 and CD2 separately.

[If anything just listen to the vocals at 1.40 after the second guitar solo in 'Hound dog' (the studio version - on vol. II): is he out of breath or has he gyrated slightly too far from the microphone when he sings "they said you was high class, well that was just a lie"? I still think it's a breath thing 30 years after first hearing it, but it's still to this day the closest corroboration in my head to seeing something in 3D.

I've never heard a Modest Mouse track before, but I like "Birds VS Worms" and look forward to listening my way through more of nicky lofi's compilation.

Elvis is a brilliant idea. Someone was talking about Jacques Brel and Scott Walker on the nominations thread - elvis is kind of that: long career, fragmented catalogue, no idea where to start. This whole exercise is made for that sort of artist imo.

This times out at just under 80 minutes. It’s the entirety of the Jefferson Airplane folder I keep on my hard drive, minus “Don’t Slip Away” from Takes Off (a reluctant omission) and “Third Week in the Chelsea” from Bark (a good song left off somewhat less reluctantly).

I’m not trying to be provocative or make some lame point by omitting “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love.” They’re both fantastic. The problem is that they’ve been played to death--on radio, in movies, in commercials. Classic-rock radio decided long ago that these are the only two songs that the Jefferson Airplane ever recorded. In forty years of listening to the radio, the only other thing I’ve ever heard by them is “Embryonic Journey,” exactly once. As someone who loves so much of what they did, this is very frustrating.

“Miracles” is great too, but I’d have to leave something off to make room for it, and it would also open the door to a different time. I like keeping the time frame at 1965 to 1974, from LBJ’s highwater mark to Nixon’s resignation. The cover art was a struggle. Great image, ugly text.

I might have to make that Beatles Greatest Hits album Ismael Klata. I've never really listened to every Beatles song. I would play my parents old vinyl records a long time ago. I don't remember much besides the regular hits. Also I should give The Byrds a whirl. I'll have to make that EP of yours. I'm not familiar with much of The Byrds to be honest.

I considered doing a second disc of other artists' tracks that Louis Philippe either wrote or produced, but it's just too daunting a task for me at the moment. Seek out the Siesta Records compilations Algebra Spaghetti and Simultaneous Ice Cream (both of which he produced) if you're into '90s revivalist sunshine pop.

fyi:

• The Border Boys track also appears on the compilation Crépuscule for Café Après-midi 2, and the Arcadians' only album was reissued as Let's Pretend in the '90s. they're the same band by two different names.

• "Telephone Box" also appears on the best-of collection Claret.

• An earlier version of "Fires Rise and Die" appears on the album Appointment With Venus, but it's not as good because it has an awkward trumpet solo in the middle, and it doesn't have Louis's daughter reciting a passage from a French translation of a Jonathan Coe novel, hard-panned from left to right and back again until the fadeout (no really, this is a good thing).

"You're Welcome" (possibly from a radio session?) seems to only exist on slsk. I think I hear Louis amidst the harmonies, but maybe that's just confirmation bias. It could be the fuckin Wondermints for all I know.

Not really. And it's actually three different dudes--a guy named Matt Chamberlain for the Ten-era stuff, then Dave Abbruzzese
for Vs. and Vitalogy, and he was replaced by Jack Irons from some incarnation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for No Code. Then Soundgarden's Matt Cameron took over, and he's still with them. The rest of the original Pearl Jam line-up has always been the same.
