blueski -- Good catch! I stopped following them after the late 90s. I meant to browse Output Transmission in particular -- but didn't follow through.

I'll toss in Lemonsoul (with Elbow's Guy Garvey) too. To be honest, I don't know timings for those bonus tracks; might need to drop one or both to fit on a single CD.

I’m Gonna Lose My Way and You’ll Lose Yours: The Jefferson Airplane 1965-1974

1. “Free Advice,” Great Society (7-inch, 1966)
2. “Runnin’ ‘Round This World,” Jefferson Airplane (7-inch, 1966)
3. “Blues from an Airplane,” Jefferson Airplane (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, 1966)
4. “Come Up the Years,” Jefferson Airplane (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, 1966)
5. “J.P.P. McStep B. Blues,” Jefferson Airplane (Early Flight, 1966)
6. “Today,” Jefferson Airplane (Surrealistic Pillow, 1967)
7. “Embryonic Journey,” Jefferson Airplane (Surrealistic Pillow, 1967)
8. “The Ballad of You & Me & Pooneil,” Jefferson Airplane (After Bathing at Baxter’s, 1967)
9. “Won’t You Try,” Jefferson Airplane (After Bathing at Baxter’s, 1967)
10. “Saturday Afternoon,” Jefferson Airplane (After Bathing at Baxter’s, 1967)
11. “Martha,” Jefferson Airplane (7-inch, 1967)
12. “The House at Pooneil Corners,” Jefferson Airplane (Crown of Creation, 1968)
13. “The Other Side of This Life,” Jefferson Airplane (Bless Its Pointed Little Head, 1969)
14. “It’s No Secret,” Jefferson Airplane (Bless Its Pointed Little Head, 1969)
15. “We Can Be Together,” Jefferson Airplane (Volunteers, 1969)
16. “Mexico,” Jefferson Airplane (7-inch, 1970)
17. “Thunk,” Jefferson Airplane (Bark, 1971)
18. “When I Was a Boy I Watched the Wolves,” Paul Kanter & Grace Slick (Sunfighter, 1971)
19. “Sea Child,” Hot Tuna (Burgers, 1972)
20. “Alexander the Medium,” Jefferson Airplane (Long John Silver, 1972)
21. “Genesis,” Jorma Kaukonen (Quah, 1974)

This times out at just under 80 minutes. It’s the entirety of the Jefferson Airplane folder I keep on my hard drive, minus “Don’t Slip Away” from Takes Off (a reluctant omission) and “Third Week in the Chelsea” from Bark (a good song left off somewhat less reluctantly).

I’m not trying to be provocative or make some lame point by omitting “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love.” They’re both fantastic. The problem is that they’ve been played to death--on radio, in movies, in commercials. Classic-rock radio decided long ago that these are the only two songs that the Jefferson Airplane ever recorded. In forty years of listening to the radio, the only other thing I’ve ever heard by them is “Embryonic Journey,” exactly once. As someone who loves so much of what they did, this is very frustrating.

“Miracles” is great too, but I’d have to leave something off to make room for it, and it would also open the door to a different time. I like keeping the time frame at 1965 to 1974, from LBJ’s highwater mark to Nixon’s resignation. The cover art was a struggle. Great image, ugly text.

(I found some of the nudge-nudge, wink-wink instructions on the previous thread a little confusing. So: nudge-nudge, wink-wink, if you are interested in a physical copy of this, click on my name and follow the money.)

I make no secret that I consider OC to be the greatest band in the world right now. I love every song here.

Gone for the epics there I see

gone for the best stuff! Compilations w/bands like Magma are weird, because any of their best work does the job of demonstrating what is great about Magma. Yet, two discs of their best stuff seems both redundant and woefully inadequate. see also: Stereolab, Free Design, Can, Cardiacs

if you order now, the bonus disc is:

1. "La" Dawotsin
2. Mekanik Machine
3. The Last Seven Minutes
4. Spiritual
5. the entirety of Wurdah Itah
6. Soleil d'Ork

I might have to make that Beatles Greatest Hits album Ismael Klata. I've never really listened to every Beatles song. I would play my parents old vinyl records a long time ago. I don't remember much besides the regular hits. Also I should give The Byrds a whirl. I'll have to make that EP of yours. I'm not familiar with much of The Byrds to be honest.

My second mix is on hold until I listen to an assload of music over and over. I have around 275 songs to choose from but I'm enjoying being choosy with them

12. Tagalong (4:31)
13. Glamour (6:13)
14. I Wish (3:21)
15. Of A Time (7:35)

I've tried to cover each of their albums equally but 6/7ths of Coalesced is on here for no reason other than it is the greatest dreampop album ever released.

The compilation closer is one of the most devastating tracks i've ever heard and i can't listen to it sober.

Louis Philippe
Fires Rise

1. When Will You Be Back (by the Border Boys) (Tribute EP: 1983)
2. On Our Last Day Together (by the Arcadians) (Mad Mad World: 1985)
3. The Orchard (Appointment with Venus: 1986)
4. What If a Day ("Anthony Bay" b-side: 1987)
5. You Mary You (él single, 1987)
6. Smash Hit Wonder (Ivory Tower: 1987)
7. Endless September (Yuri Gagarin: 1989)
8. Telephone Box (Edward Barton cover)(Edward Not Edward compilation: 1989)
9. The Metempsychosis Song (Rainfall: 1991)
10. I Just Wasn't Made for These Times (Beach Boys cover) (Rainfall: 1991)
11. Vicky Page (Jean Renoir: 1992)
12. Lazy English Sun (Sunshine: 1994)
13. Wichi-Tai-To (Jim Pepper cover)(Delta Kiss: 1994)
14. She Means Everything to Me (Jackie Girl: 1996)
15. You'll Never Catch the Sun (Azure: 1998)
16. Fires Rise and Die (9th & 13th: 2002)
17. I Knew It All Along (The Wonder of It All: 2004)
18. Lights Were Dancing on the Ceiling (An Unknown Spring: 2007)
19. An Unknown Spring (An Unknown Spring: 2007)
20. Lazy Thunderstorms (Blueboy cover)(Country Music: Songs for Keith Girdler compilation: 2008)
21. You're Welcome (Beach Boys cover) (4-08-2008)

It's strictly chronological because I couldn't be bothered to sequence it any other way.

I considered doing a second disc of other artists' tracks that Louis Philippe either wrote or produced, but it's just too daunting a task for me at the moment. Seek out the Siesta Records compilations Algebra Spaghetti and Simultaneous Ice Cream (both of which he produced) if you're into '90s revivalist sunshine pop.

fyi:

  • The Border Boys track also appears on the compilation Crépuscule for Café Après-midi 2, and the Arcadians' only album was reissued as Let's Pretend in the '90s. they're the same band by two different names.
  • "Telephone Box" also appears on the best-of collection Claret.
  • An earlier version of "Fires Rise and Die" appears on the album Appointment With Venus, but it's not as good because it has an awkward trumpet solo in the middle, and it doesn't have Louis's daughter reciting a passage from a French translation of a Jonathan Coe novel, hard-panned from left to right and back again until the fadeout (no really, this is a good thing).
an earlier version of "Lazy English Sun" appears on the album Jean Renoir, but it suffers from a lack of synthesized harpsichord and a wack drum machine beat.

"You're Welcome" (possibly from a radio session?) seems to only exist on slsk. I think I hear Louis amidst the harmonies, but maybe that's just confirmation bias. It could be the fuckin Wondermints for all I know.

:)

The Pearl Jam really is excellent, thanks. The more I hear them the more I think they are/were one of the great bands. Great drumming too, were they known for that?

Not really. And it's actually three different dudes--a guy named Matt Chamberlain for the Ten-era stuff, then Dave Abbruzzese
for Vs. and Vitalogy, and he was replaced by Jack Irons from some incarnation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for No Code. Then Soundgarden's Matt Cameron took over, and he's still with them. The rest of the original Pearl Jam line-up has always been the same.

More importantly, I'm stoked that you enjoyed the compilation!

Hopefully I will get around to actually assembling/downloading/listening to some of the playlists over the weekend, & also posting my own Stereolab & Luna comps, which will likely happen on Monday at this point.

With Every Word I Say: The Shoes 1976-1997

1. “Alone but Satisfied,” Shoes (Bazooka, 1976)
2. “The Atlantic,” Shoes (Bazooka, 1976)
3. “Like I Told You,” Shoes (Bazooka, 1976)
4. “Boys Don’t Lie,” Shoes (Black Vinyl Shoes, 1977)
5. “Do You Wanna Get Lucky,” Shoes (Black Vinyl Shoes, 1977)
6. “Not Me,” Shoes (Black Vinyl Shoes, 1977)
7. “Capital Gain,” Shoes (Black Vinyl Shoes, 1977)
8. “Nowhere So Fast,” Shoes (Black Vinyl Shoes, 1977)
9. “Tomorrow Night,” Shoes (Present Tense, 1979)
10. “Too Late,” Shoes (Present Tense, 1979)
11. “Now and Then,” Shoes (Present Tense, 1979)
12. “Yes or No,” Shoes (Tongue Twister, 1981)
13. “Curiosity,” Shoes (Boomerang, 1982)
14. “Running Wild,” Shoes (Silhouette, 1984)
15. “I’ll Follow You,” Shoes (Stolen Wishes, 1989)
16. “Love Does,” Shoes (Stolen Wishes, 1989)
17. “I Can’t Go Wrong,” Shoes (Stolen Wishes, 1989)
18. “Never Ending,” Shoes (Propeller, 1994)
19. “It Happens All the Time,” Jeff Murphy (Cantilever, 1997)

Not for everyone; for me, a kind of singular and, except for their first couple of LPs, anachronistic genius within shouting distance of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson. (Calling on Thus Sang Freud for some back-up.)

The total time is about 60 minutes, not 80; like the old Pye compilations, Golden Hour of the Shoes. I’m sure I could push it to 80, but I’d have to take out some vinyl and start combing over the early-’80s albums, and I’m far too lazy. I’ll stick with the songs I used to put on mix-tapes. My familiarity with the later LPs and Jeff Murphy’s solo record is much newer, so I’m more confident of those picks. Many people make do with Black Vinyl Shoes. I think you’re missing a lot if you stop there.

(Same offer as with the Jefferson Airplane compilation above: click on my handle and take it from there.)

very good early choices clemenza, will have to email for the late 80s and 90s tracks. "Tomorrow Night" is probably my favorite for that amazing bridge.

Busy Signal, Born and Grow: The Best of 2006-2010

1. Nah Guh Jail Again (single version)
2. Born and Grow (from Step Out)
3. Tic Toc (from Loaded)
4. My Money (Money Tree) (from D.O.B.)
5. Murderer (from Loaded)
6. Picante (from D.O.B.)
7. Da Style Deh (from Strictly The Best Vol. 41)
8. These Are the Days (from Loaded)
9. One More Night (from D.O.B.)
10. Up in Her Belly (single)
11. Trading Places (Nylon Riddim) (from Greensleeves One Drop Rhythm #1: Nylon)
12. The Result (from Stand Firm)
13. Love Me Not? (from Step Out)
14. Cool Baby (from Loaded)
15. Unknown Number (from Loaded)
16. Sweet Love (Nightshift) (from D.O.B.)

Some good watching in there! I made this for a friend recently, leaving off some of his big hits (for taste), and just added "Unknown Number," which I guess breaks the no-consecutive-songs-from-the-same-album rule, but I think it works. "Sweet Love" and "One More Night" link the same video, which combines those songs in a video that brings me back to my year as a security guard in New Orleans.

Two things that baffle me about this thread:

1. Pete Scholtes knows next to nothing about Roxy Music (wha??? how on earth is that even possible??).

2. whatever thinks Elvis "doesn't get much of a mention on radio (wha???) or ILM (wha????)."

I know "More Than This" from the dawn of MTV.

No Spotify here in Canadaland either, but where possible I've linked to all kinds of YouTubes goodness. No real rationale, other than that the songs sound awesome in this order. To me, Low are a domestic apocalypse, the sound of things disintegrating on a tiny personal level, as if your toaster started crying inconsolably one sun-drenched morning and didn't know how to stop. Oh, and I also wanted to showcase their ability to cover other artists in ways that might surprise casual listeners, so spot the Neil Young, Journey, Beatles, Smiths and Bee Gees songs, etc.

A Low Collection
