i don't get the "sammich" thing - like do people think it's cute, is it supposed to signify a whimsical nature? Is it that they associate sandwiches with childhood, and calling it a "sammich" is a reference to that period of their lives?

Yes.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 10 September 2010 18:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Also I guess it's how one would pronounce "sandwich" if one were to be eating a sandwich at the time.

mmm I loves me a porn sammich

talking with your mouth full is pretty rude

sarahel, Friday, 10 September 2010 19:04 (thirteen years ago) link

anyway, i think it's annoying and i am sick of it - people of all ages eat sandwiches

sarahel, Friday, 10 September 2010 19:10 (thirteen years ago) link

well it isn't helped that Quiznos now calls some of their sandwiches "Sammies", which reinforces it.

Bo Jackson Cruise Control (San Te), Friday, 10 September 2010 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe i just talk weird - but i'd say "sanwich" - not sure where the "m" sound comes from

sarahel, Friday, 10 September 2010 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I know some people who pronounce it samwidge with nothing but adult intentions. So to speak. And I only said sammich because I needed a third variation. Anyway this topic is to blame for my current sadness, as after participating I felt like having a sandwich for dinner but the shop had none. :(

I dislike most slang that is based on mispronunciation in general. also fratboys ruin ALL slang, that is fact.

Bo Jackson Cruise Control (San Te), Friday, 10 September 2010 19:25 (thirteen years ago) link

like in high school I knew a guy who spelled damn "damb" as slang. like lamb.

Bo Jackson Cruise Control (San Te), Friday, 10 September 2010 19:25 (thirteen years ago) link

oh - i have no problem with pronunciation variants due to accents - it's this faux-infantile speech (though it is mostly posting on the internet, and not actual real life speech) that is irritating. Like the way little kids talk is cute when it's done by actual little kids. But on something like facebook - it just feels like people are trying too hard.

sarahel, Friday, 10 September 2010 19:26 (thirteen years ago) link

trying too hard to what?

honestly - i think the "sammich" people that annoy me, also annoy me for less trivial reasons

sarahel, Friday, 10 September 2010 19:40 (thirteen years ago) link

i also dislike it when anybody who isn't a Cuban gangster says "mang"

Bo Jackson Cruise Control (San Te), Friday, 10 September 2010 19:43 (thirteen years ago) link

So if you stand a loaf of bread up on its side... is there just an endless possibility of bread sandwiches within? Can it be used as a motivational tool sort of like "you are capable of anything"? It is up to you to choose how many bread sandwiches you make in life.

I think Rachel Ray has a lot to do with the "sammies" revival of the late 2000s.

i dislike the term "sandwich artist". ain't difficult to make a dang sandwich and I don't care how it looks I care how it tastes

Bo Jackson Cruise Control (San Te), Friday, 10 September 2010 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link

what is a sandwich artist? is it like the person who draws little foam designs in coffee drinks? Do they do that with sandwiches?

sarahel, Friday, 10 September 2010 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link

It's a person who works in Subway, basically.

ailsa, Friday, 10 September 2010 20:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm all for job titles like "sandiwch artists" that give a little dignity.

Olde Executioner 8hundo (Eazy), Friday, 10 September 2010 20:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i'd feel a bit undignified with a job title that contains a typo

sarahel, Friday, 10 September 2010 20:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i dislike fancy or uber-pretentious job titles, even when I have them myself

Bo Jackson Cruise Control (San Te), Friday, 10 September 2010 20:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm all for job titles like "sandiwch artists" that give a little dignity.

Traditionally, the more grandiose the job label, the shittier the job.

exactly. i was a Media Specialist once when really all I did was tell someone where the crappy Harvey Danger cds were and put crap on shelves.

"Trad" instead of "traditional". It sounds like a preppy boy's name.

"ain't difficult to make a dang sandwich"

i've bought some very poorly constructed sandwiches before so i believe the opposite must exist, someone who can really save a mediocre to poor sandwich purely through skill.

yeah I have been decidedly not feeling this for some time - associate it with a fairly specific indieish sort of girl but this might just say more about the company I keep tbf
