you want to see the set three times just so you can watch a different dude each time.

ha this is incredibly OTM from when I saw them, also from a few feet away - I kind of alternated between them like five minutes at a time

This site already seems as unruly as a Marnie Stern record (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 08:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks a million EIII!

two months pass...

Oh my god, just heard this tonight and I'm pretty sure this immediately catapulted into my top ten for the year. Holy shit.

I've been trying hard to like this record but somehow it just doesn't click.
I'm sure it might be fun to see them perform live tho.

theyre in london with borbetomagus next week. pissed emeralds arent playing as well but what the hey

straightola, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 15:01 (thirteen years ago) link

record is still doing it for me. probably my favorite from 2010? i just want MORE -- they should definitely do a live album. Chasny seems to be putting out a collab with the lady from Magik Markers early next year ...

tylerw, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 16:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes, a live album would be fantastic. Especially since I missed them with Major Stars at the Empty Bottle earlier this fall.

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 21:28 (thirteen years ago) link

there should be a Rangda/Major Stars/Cave Drag City psych rock revue. and they should play in my backyard, preferably.

tylerw, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 21:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Your backyard would then be a particularly great place to be! That would be a stellar lineup.

I hear more than a little Grateful Dead in "Plain of Jars", and I mean that in the best possible way.

Got stuck working till super late so had to give this a miss last night, pretty pissed off. Anyone make it to the gig?

straightola, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 11:40 (thirteen years ago) link

last night was refreshing. chris corsano is a very dynamic drummer live.. it's good to see something that can be just as mesmerizing when it's not so loud all the time. sir bishops guitar playing was blazing!

emeralds were perfect, they played drones for 15 minutes and progressed into a couple of 'does it look like i'm here' songs. i almost fell asleep.

jumpskins, Thursday, 9 December 2010 07:50 (thirteen years ago) link

saw them a few days ago & it deepened my appreciation of the album a lot, but the live show is the perfect article I think; they have amazing range and at moments it was just fucking serene, esp while spacing out w/ eyes fixed on corsano's head, blank except for glow in the dark ear plugs. seeing him get better&better is one of life's pleasures.

ogmor, Sunday, 12 December 2010 13:27 (thirteen years ago) link

one year passes...

from SRB's Facebook: "RANGDA (Chasny, Corsano, Bishop) will be playing a handful of east coast shows in late Feb before recording a new record. Details will be announced soon."
Still <3 this record, can't wait for a new one.

This news just made my afternoon!

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

aw hell yeah! so glad this wasn't a one-off.

now if they would only play the West Coast...

sleeve, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

Hope Virginia makes this list, really wanna see these three live. Any one of them alone worth a night out and then some.

grandavis, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah. Corsano is playing in St Louis this weekend with Darin Gray and...someone else too, I think. Too broke to make the trip, tho.

Trip Maker, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

Cool that he and Darin Gray have hooked up ... need to look Corsano's general itinerary up I guess.

Thanks! Own about 5 things with him on it, but obviously need to cast a wide net to hear it all. Mainly wanna see him live again at this point, records will happen over time.

tylerw, Thursday, 2 February 2012 20:56 (twelve years ago) link

you could fly to the Easthampton show and run up the road to Scott's store! He's a gracious host.

will he pay for my plane ticket though

tylerw, Thursday, 2 February 2012 21:55 (twelve years ago) link

Cane it for the original white tees (admrl), Thursday, 2 February 2012 23:48 (twelve years ago) link

Sheesh. I don't want to wait over a year for a West Coast tour.

townes (van smack), Friday, 3 February 2012 01:57 (twelve years ago) link

Definitely see Chikamorachi (Corsano + Darin Gray) on this tour, you guys. I saw them in Louisville and then made the trip the next night to see them in Lexington. They were that good. Astonishing, really. Don't miss it!!

They are so fun to watch live, you should go. Are they coming to Chicago? How come no one told me?!

La Lechera, Friday, 3 February 2012 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

Ahh, they are playing two NYC shows. 6 months ago that would have worked, but nothing south of there? Must be recording in the city or something. Assume there will be more shows when a record materializes.

grandavis, Friday, 3 February 2012 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

totally going!

La Lechera, Friday, 3 February 2012 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

hope some people show up to the show tonight, there's basically no one on the facebook invite.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Friday, 3 February 2012 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

If I knew anyone that lived there I would be making them go, but seems like Madison would have at least a small Corsano cult (not sure how many radars Darin Gray is still on).

Wish I could go. I imagine it is like a sped up, vibraphone-less On Filmore or something (and I really like On Filmore).

grandavis, Friday, 3 February 2012 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

It really runs the gamut. The way Darin plays, the strings on the bass are merely ONE possible sound-making source. I was up close and you can really see how many nicks and dings are in his bass from his abuse of it. At one point he was punching it and screaming. Corsano is never less than a marvel to behold - dude is probably one of the most creative percussionists of all time. This is a perfectly matched duo - super intense, super fun (a few people laughed out loud at certain points), just incredible. Go!

Jordan, your gf will dig it. My wife digs weird music, but mostly of the Kranky / Tim Hecker / Basinski variety - not so much a free jazz buff. She was super into Chikamorachi, said it was one of the best shows she's seen in a long time (and she's seen more shows than me). Go!

semi-related -
Comets on Fire just went into the studio as Ben Chasny's backing band for the next Six Organs Of Admittance record (an electric rock Six Organs album) for Drag City.
interesting that chasny wants to make an electric rock six organs record, even w/ rangda as a going concern. anticipating!
