To the Associates? Now that I could see...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I was listening to the Associates Singles comp today, amazing to think that the cover of Boys Keep Swinging came out a few weeks after Bowie's version.

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Speaking of Associates: reissue of original Affectionate Punch due in August

Andy Kellman (ADK), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Good thing too!

I'm on a major Associates kick this week *and* I have an idea for a new book or story because of it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:15 (nineteen years ago) link

just picked them up over my lunch hour and can't wait to dig in. very, very excited. as an FYI to the Amurrican ILMers, Best Buy is actually the cheapest brick and mortar store i've found them at - $22.99 a pop.

jonviachicago, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

This is so great. I hadn't listened to Faith in such a long time... It sounds perfect. That long fade out at the end of All Cats are Grey is the most beautiful music I've heard, or nearly.
Funeral Party is still boring though...

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:15 (nineteen years ago) link

$22.99 a pop.

ouch. oh well, got paid today!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Woohoo. $19.99 each at Easy street ... just called 'em. on hold for me until the end of the day. EEEEEEE!

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:21 (nineteen years ago) link

22.99, bah. *ponders* There are other stores, though, hmmm

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Skipped out at 2:15PM EST here in Boston USA and all three new reissues were already *sold out* at the nearby location of a fairly respectable and sizable local chain. I am somewhat amazed by that. But can't say I am disappointed to have to make yet another trip to the record store.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:37 (nineteen years ago) link

so i am going over what rare stuff i already have and think ill go with pornography but man i wish i had the $$ for all of them

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Ahh just finished listening to the Faith stuff. Nothing mind-blowing on the 2nd disc but it's interesting to see how the album could have taken a very different direction. The unreleased songs would have fitted nicely on say The Top. Charlotte Sometimes must have been an afterthought cuz it sounds as muffled as it did on Standing on the Beach. Part of the charm, I guess...

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:27 (nineteen years ago) link

GROUSEGRIPE. Just a couple more hours...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:41 (nineteen years ago) link

OMGWTF - the demo of The Hanging Garden is the best thing ever

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:10 (nineteen years ago) link

*dances about in frustration*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:10 (nineteen years ago) link

It has suddenly danwed on me that IdealCopy is shipping these to me and I won't get them for another week. BASTARDS.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

See, there's a reason I'm just going to store, slight extra cost be damned.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:28 (nineteen years ago) link

all the reissues are $18.97 each plus free shipping at Deep Discount CD .

don weiner, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:36 (nineteen years ago) link

They a spinoff of DeepDiscount DVD? Or vice versa? Not bad, it has to be said (but what's tax I wonder).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, but do the give you a NEAT POSTER???

(Also, when did Rob Thomas turn into Sinead O'Connor?????)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:40 (nineteen years ago) link

The few, the proud, the bald.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago) link

so how does that version of forever sound, compared to the one on curiosity? and all mine, as well, if it sounds different?

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 00:50 (nineteen years ago) link

YES THEY BELONG TO MEEEEEE

Going to listen to these one a night. 17 Seconds sounds really grand with this remaster, I must say. Into the bonus disc now -- hearing the Cult Hero songs with such crispness is quite a treat.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 03:00 (nineteen years ago) link

"Speaking of Associates: reissue of original Affectionate Punch due in August"

this is the greatest news of the year!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 05:14 (nineteen years ago) link

It's another version of Forever (from 81 whereas the Curiosity one is from 84). It's OK as such but I prefer later versions
All Mine sounds pretty luch the same. Most of the live cuts on the Faith reissue are also taken from Curiosity.

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:29 (nineteen years ago) link

argh!

*runs to amazon*

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:38 (nineteen years ago) link

thanks baaderoni :)

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah, the giddy pleasure of recognizing the foundations of Let's Go to Bed, under layers of Porn guitars, on the last track of the 2nd disc...

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I like how the booklets show the Transformation Of The Look over those years...the lipstick appears...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:20 (nineteen years ago) link

See, not all that many of the Disc 2 tracks jump out at me and say "you must listen to me immediately or your full understanding of your favourite band EVAH will be damaged..."

If I were to buy one of the three albums first, I'd go for Seventeen Seconds simply because it's, umm, my favourite Cure album; but the extras don't look all that. Details please, and a compare-and-contrast would also be handy!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Have I mentioned that I hate all of you? (That poster better be fucking magical.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, Faith and Porn extras are both divided in demos/unreleased songs/live stuff.
Comparison and contrast:
1-live stuff, I'd take Porn since as noted above most of the live cuts on Faith were on Curiosity. Plus you get All Mine, which is pretty much urgent and key
2-demos, nothing too special, EXCEPT the psychedelic Primary and a slowed down Hanging Garden, which are both must haves.
3-unreleased songs, pleasant but average goth fare on Porn, Top-like fun extravaganza on Faith

concluding remarks: Carnage Visors

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:30 (nineteen years ago) link

The MAGICK poster!!

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

ok, me shut up now, yes?

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:35 (nineteen years ago) link

haha yeah, having Carnage Visors on CD for the first time almost swings the pendulum decisively towards Faith on its own!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:36 (nineteen years ago) link

is this worth getting, as an import to the uk?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I enjoy the 17 Seconds extras without immediately thinking 'revelation' but a number of them are perfectly fine treats -- the Cult Hero tracks of course (including the live versions!), but the alternate "Three" mix is enjoyable and the live in France tracks good. Sadly, by Smith's own admission, what would have been possibly killer demos -- the original solo-at-home demos for a number of the songs, recorded straight after coming off the Cure/Banshees double-act tour -- have been lost. :-(

I've been enjoying all the liner note info with stuff I'd either missed or never knew, such as that info. For instance, Smith says the reason why "The Final Sound" segues into "A Forest" that way is because while it was supposed to be a long instrumental, the tape ran out and Mike Hedges didn't tell them that because they were on such a tight budget they couldn't afford an extra one! Sounds great of course, I love happy accidents.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:41 (nineteen years ago) link

i think this is what Baaderonixxxorzh was trying to post:

http://idealcopy.american-data.net//Merchant2/graphics/00000001/large/MUCure-3Pack01.jpg

if that's the actual poster, it's rub.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:44 (nineteen years ago) link

ARGH THAT IS PRECISELY THE PACKAGE I AM WAITING FOR "IDEALCOPY" MY ASS MORE LIKE "TORTUREYOUWITHSLOWNESSCOPY"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:44 (nineteen years ago) link

about a year ago i went through the trouble of recording my carnage visors and curiosity cassettes onto CD's. oh well...

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Er, should I mention I just started listening to 17 Seconds again here at work...?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think I had already had something very similar to this when I used to hang long boxes on my bedroom walls...

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahah, uh oh, 1989 Ned to thread on that score...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Mind you, at least you could hang some longboxes up as opposed to, I dunno, those horrible plastic bubble things...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

oooh, that deepdiscountcd link above is tempting. my local tower has these for approx $28 (incl tax) which is just ridiculous.

it seems to me that the big ilm cure heads really dig these so far...i still have to ask, are the liner notes, remastering, and extra material really worth it?

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:14 (nineteen years ago) link

i should add that 17 secs and faith are among my fave cure albums.

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd say it's totally worth it, but I'm that way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:21 (nineteen years ago) link

i knew you would say that, ned!

i have to say that i am glad they are digipaks.

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:35 (nineteen years ago) link

In relistening to the 17 bonus songs now they're already starting to nestle in stronger. I especially love the crowd cheering "FRANK-IE!" at the end of the Cult Hero live cuts.
