I'm gonna go ahead and initiate the backlash in response to the msgboard hype. If we can go ahead and have this back-and-forth and get things settled before it's actually released, that would be just great, super

wait, the whole album leaked?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:20 (thirteen years ago) link

just two-thirds

markers, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:21 (thirteen years ago) link

good idea. you start the backlash and, by the time the album comes out, we'll be ready for the counter-backlash. voila: album of the year.

Z S, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm sick of this new album, anyway.

i hear "cee-lo green (the soul machine)" has a new song that's a surefire hit. i'll listen to that instead.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

can't believe I have to wait thirteen days to hear this

markers, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:29 (thirteen years ago) link

"Hipster" as prerogative. (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 21:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Listened to it again. It's immediately captivating AND a grower. HAHAHAHAHAHA.

SourPatchCorpse, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Let me just go ahead and say that if pitchfork hates this, then I like it, and if they like it I hate it, and either way it's lame that anyone cares what pitchfork thinks

Z S, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 22:24 (thirteen years ago) link

p4k loves it. i hear it's going to get a 10.0.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not even past the first song and I'm already like

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 23:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Z S, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 23:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Z S, are those the eyes of a positive or negative reaction?

SourPatchCorpse, Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:09 (thirteen years ago) link

for the first song, extreme positive reaction. I just finished the album, and overall I enjoyed it more on first listen than Microcastle (which I ended up loving after a several plays - it usually takes me a few). I had already heard Helicoptor and Revival, which would have been two standouts, so the reaction was a little more muted than it would have been otherwise.

But man, that first song ("Earthquake") is outstanding!! I can't even really wager a guess on whether or not it would appeal to fans of deerhunter/atlas sound's older stuff, but it tickles my fancy in all the right spots, kinda reminds me of MBV in a way that isn't overly derivative, just awesome.

Z S, Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, Earthquake is not only a great tune, but an excellent opening to the record.

SourPatchCorpse, Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:33 (thirteen years ago) link

"desire lines" is a perfect encapsulation of what deerhunter does well. the break at the 3 minute mark and those lyrical guitar lines that elevate ever so smoothly...

oscar, Thursday, 16 September 2010 02:34 (thirteen years ago) link

is that Lockett singing on "Desire Lines"?

Z S, Thursday, 16 September 2010 02:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Really loved his solo album (as Lotus Plaza), and his turns at the mic for Deerhunter (Agoraphobia, Dot Gain is his song, etc)

Z S, Thursday, 16 September 2010 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i fuckin love "agoraphobia" and tbh i didn't know it was lockett singing it until someone pointed it out to me

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 September 2010 02:45 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah agora and dotgain are faves of mine. i think i may just dig dudes voice/sensibility

oscar, Thursday, 16 September 2010 02:47 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i was really surprised when i read that lockett was behind 'agoraphobia'

J0rdan S., Thursday, 16 September 2010 02:48 (thirteen years ago) link

if he records another lotus plaza and tightens things up a little bit (I love it but it makes you drunk to listen to it, everything is so fucking fuzzy) I predict a minor classic. dude's got skillz

Z S, Thursday, 16 September 2010 02:48 (thirteen years ago) link

("it" = his first album as lotus plaza)

Z S, Thursday, 16 September 2010 02:48 (thirteen years ago) link

(u find this jordy?)

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 September 2010 03:00 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, thx

"Basement Scene" is my fave right now!

Btw both "Desire Lines" and "Fountain Stairs" were first previewed last year in a live Lotus Plaza lineup:

this album is great! will buy this in two weeks time.

Bee OK, Friday, 17 September 2010 02:14 (thirteen years ago) link

many people listen to the live feed? bits of it were quite good but i kept logging off then going back an hour later to see it was still going. 4 and a half hours in the end.

he mentioned Ben Allen's son doing the recording of one of the songs onto tape. I'm pretty sure he said it was 'Memory Boy' which is pretty damn good for a 16 year olds first professional recording.

du mein bestie (micarl), Friday, 17 September 2010 09:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Revival is a wonderful two and a bit minutes of psyche-pop perfection and after a couple of listens my impression is that Halcyon Digest is another fantastic Deerhunter album that will be on the walkman for a long time. Microcastle was a bit of a flawed gem but that is what I like about the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound albums, they are always seem a bit uneven but contain moments of startling brilliance that probably wouldn't happen if they didn't continually push on with every release as they have done so far.

This Mortal Kombat (diamonddave85), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:07 (thirteen years ago) link

not huge on this album, it has some really nice sounds/production but the songwriting is really repetitive. kinda dig it in the background but it's not one of my faves of the year.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 20 September 2010 15:10 (thirteen years ago) link
