I'm putting together my beach boys comps and am having an existential fanboy crisis over whether to put in "Girl Don't Tell Me" over "California Girls". Everything else is pretty much set. It's basically impossible to justify but I really want to do it.

* Finally got around to doing this and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I download Rundgren's complete discography about 4 months ago and slowly started dipping into all his LP's, having previously only heard 'Hermit Of Mink Hollow'. I would now consider myself to be slightly obsessed with his songs. Genius isn't a word to be used lightly, but the amount of brilliant production, chord progressions, hooks and melodies is undeniable. My interest kind of trailed off after Hermit....there are some decent tracks from later albums, but overall they pale in comparison to his best period (1970-1978). I sequenced it in a build up and release way, that avoids having too many ballads in a row and hopefully sustains interest. Also, some tracks kind of compliment & bleed into each other (e.g the cymbals and synths of 'All the Children Sing' flows nicely into the style of 'The Night The Carousel Burned Down' . Mainly, I just wanted to make a decent introduction to Todd Rundgren, thus the inclusion of obvious tracks like 'I Saw The Light', 'Hello It's Me' etc. Anyways, have a listen and see what you think.

Yeah, excellent work on the 'lab, Pillbox. Kudos in particular for not doing it chronologically, which is the obvious temptation but not very Stereolab-esque (cf. Switched Ons 2 and 3 and the Oscillions box), and for the way you deal with the millstone that is Jenny O.

Including a track by Turn On is my only quibble. A separate "Stereolab side projects" best of / anthology is surely called for! ;)

The Yo La Tengo compilation is terrific. I would replace Untitled with Nowhere Near since From A Motel 6 is on the other disc and is a better version of the same song, but I made a playlist and have been jamming it most of the week now and I'm loving it. Nice work.

What's the point of leaving out the best 5-6 years of the band??

Okay, well I don't agree that those were necessarily the best years. But the point of dealing only with the second half of their career was because I feel that a lot of it was/is rather unfairly maligned.

Maresnest - much respect for your eternal love of XTC, but I gotta say I'd have significantly different picks from the albums. 5 tracks from Mummer, just 1 from The Big Express, and 7 from Skylarking? That seems unbalanced, I guess you're down on TBE but it's my all-time fave. Tracks you didn't pick that I'd substitute:

Funny that I think of Unrest as a band that put out 2 or 3 albums (not technically correct, but that's how it feels) and yet they seem awfully hard to reduce to one CD. No major complaints with the compilation (well, maybe the absence of She Makes Me Shake Like A Soul Machine) but it's still missing a fair amount of stuff I love.

Hey Gerald, you are right about the balance issue. On choosing, the idea of balance didn't come into it at-all for me.

If I had given myself a another track per cd I would most likely have included 'Seagulls Screaming' and 'Train Running Low On Soul Coal'

It does give the impression that I may be down on TBE, but I do dig it's many charms.

FWIW Red Brick Dream (a TBE b-side) is my favourite XTC song of all time.

I've noticed that the songs I leave off are often the ones that stay stuck in my head days after finishing a mix--in the case of Unrest, "Lucifer Rising."

I began working on Kraftwerk but felt awful because I couldn't really imagine anyone enjoying my mix - there's nothing on there that will surprise existing Kraftwerk fans (I like a lot of their older semi-rare stuff but it doesn't really flow on a mix very well with their more well-known electropop stuff), and it doesn't really serve as a very good intro for non-Kraftwerk fans because my fav songs by them are pretty predictable - you could probably go to allmusic.com and look for the songs with checkmarks by them and do just as well. I listened to a working version of the playlist and just felt like shit so I stopped.

I gave up on Microphones/Mt. Eerie because, after not really listening to his stuff for a couple years, I realize I loved the way they sounded sitting by myself in my car on the roof of my lol college parking garage, hilariously stoned and poofing out battie smoke through a doob tube, more than it sounds to me today after working for the man all day. When I was in <3 with the microphones I used to be able to bike out to a trail and walk around in the woods and lay in the middle of some guy's field all day without anyone bothering me or caring that I was gone. Now I'm stuck in the city, bummed out, etc, and the music doesn't really transport me to a different place so much as painfully remind me of good times that I can't get back to anymore. /emo So I quit making that one as well.

ZS i'd be really interested in seeing both mixes. I've only dabbled in Kraftwerk and know nothing about Microphones/Mt Eerie, so can only be curious. Isn't the key to this that you just throw out what you like regardless of whether it's sequenced well or rare or well known? I'd love to see/hear your window onto those two if you still feel up to it :)

I did just that for Kraftwerk and in the end it didn't do much for me aside from a few obvious things I already dug. They're a very difficult band to anthologize.

Yikes, that cover's quite big, which only emphasises how bad I am at doing that sort of stuff. Damn.

The first side is meant to be the darker, proggier stuff, and the second is supposed to be lighter and poppier, which is why it's so Slapp Happy dominated (also, a lot of it still isn't poppy at all, ha). Also, I unabashedly love Everybody's Slimmin', even though it is incredibly stupid.
