There was also a great lady in her 50s in my hometown who ran a headshop that also sold "goth accessories." Smoker's croak, still eyeliner doodles on her wrinkled face. She only liked two bands, though, Alice Cooper and Cradle of Filth. Half the stuff she sold was band merchandise, but only of those two bands, and then just drug stuff and Slave Labor Graphics comics and glitter. I think more stores should be run like this.

Aging seems to suit the goth aesthetic better, plus goths seem to naturally gravitate toward domestic bliss. It's a reasonably gender-mixed subculture.

but hey wait, i dunno about this. relative to west coast US, doesn't sync. cuz punks here is gender mixed and also domestically inclined, with the marrying and baby-making, etc. moreso than goths, who often seem to exist in semi-isolation, only ever seen out shopping with their moms, etc.

I don't mind the full-on Quadrophenia theme party look so much as the Liam Gallagher/John Harris haircut discussed upthread. I think I have a bunch of mates who are basically aging mods/Northern Soul dudes but in a tasteful way maybe?

Shd've maybe worked in "dudes who look like they wanna be Ian Brown or Richard Ashcroft" somehow.

Mods of any age, obv. Ben Shermans seem like more of a skin thing, tho. Aging skinheads shd be separate entry although maybe the aging mod look is sort of the skinhead retirement plan.

There was a mod who worked at Domino's Pizza with me back in 98 or whatever. He had one of those re, white, and blue target stickers on the back of his car. He was a total snob about ska and I couldn't have a convo with him about even the Toasters or the Pietasters or anything.

Anyway, as far as the aging thing, punx all the way.

Older punk dudes are usually quite endearing, mods are insufferable regardless of age.

See, the whole "mod" look is something I could 'carry off' but it's nothing I want.. (no desire to own a scooter, parkas were always a red herring, and it was always about looking good at age 20, not looking "mod" at age 50).

older moddy dudes i have encountered often have gd taste knowledge of jazz/soul/modernism in gen, whereas i once got dragged to a rezillos reunion show by ageing punka friends and it was one of the worst nights of my life (also gold blade in support ugh)

I encounter a lot more aging punx than aging mods, but most aging punk dudes are A+ would hang out with again, so them.

Sort of realising if I actually dressed like a punk I would probably qualify as an aging punk dude now though...

I have it on good authority that Charlie Harper from UK Subs is the best aging punk dude in the world, and that John Robb is a pain in the hole.

the old mods round my way, afaict, are sort of on the fringes of the Cardiff City hooligan cabal without being actual 'Soul Crew'

Nah my answer last night was mostly a factor of having to type on my little phone keyboard, really aging punks prob have the best outlook on life and are the nicest to be around. Pretty much if you survived the era and have moderately got some of your shit together, are drug-free, etc, a mellowed-out punk sounds unbeatable to me.

Mod dress ages really well on its own, though -- the sillier parts not obv but suits & tailored leisure stuff are always going to look good/feel good.

Still got his hair so it would be hilarious if he went for the Weller cut - but then he's an original mod and not a saddo Jam fan so unlikely.

(xp) Funnily enough, one of the few times, after I first moved to London, when I was excited to see a celebrity in the flesh was when I saw Mick Jones in an M&S Food shop and, I must admit, I did kinda follow him around for a few minutes.

When me and my girl were at the Velvet Underground gig, we were trying to get ice lollies out of the vending machines at the back of the hall. We succeeded, and turned back to watch the band, and right there was Mick Jones and some of his friends. Man, he was thin!

There's a guy in his 40s who's regularly on my bus to and from work who convincingly wears the Ben Sherman shirt / jeans / work boots / parka combo. I think a lot of that is because he has a buzzcut rather than a Wellend or similar hairstyle. Although today he was wearing a Liam bucket hat, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that this was entirely for practically as it was very sunny and hot today. And I could hardly criticise his choice of headgear as I was wearing what my work colleagues refer to as a 'fishing hat' ie a repeatedly folded/crumpled up and sweated through khaki number from M&S.
