Yeah, I don't see why anyone would want a Zune - either get an iPod or get a cheaper player. Zune is as expensive as the iPod, larger, and has no major advantages and several disadvantages.

I got to play with a Zune last Thursday night at some party they were throwing in Hollywood. They're pretty neat, but they don't work with Macs. You can tell they put a lot of effort into making the user interface as simple as the iPod's, but without copying it.

They do have an advantage over the iPod: you can send songs and pictures from one to another. Granted, the chances of two Zune owners ever being in the same place together are probably slim, but I could see the fun-potential in sending goatse to random strangers.

Why would anyone in their right mind buy one of these? Surely it's going to be full of awkward and badly-designed filters to stop you playing illegal downloads/anything from a record label owned by Sony?

Also, it's got a stupid name.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 November 2006 09:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Songs are play count and/or time period locked when transfered

Yeah, three times and/or three days, which sort of sucks but it's probably MS' concession to the big record labels (in addition to paying Universal $1 per Zune sold). I guess it's fair though, to at least have the full song to hear like that. If it was good enough to own you could always buy it. If the song stinks, you're not going to care if it disappears. They didn't have a demo of the Zune software, so I don't know how that is, nor do I know how good the bundled headphones sound (most likely crappy).

naus (Robert T), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Plus! Doesn't play anything that you might have bought from Rhapsody or Napster! After all the propaganda about how the iPod and iTMS need to be compatible with other MP3 players, Microsoft aren't even compatible with themselves...

As a side note, I never realized that Alanis Morissette had a song called "Doth I Protest Too Much?" - I'm surprised that this grammatically incorrect allusion to Shakespeare didn't provide even more fodder for the relentless mockers of "Ironic."

I saw one of these in a bar recently as well. It was not super user friendly (in the dark), partially b/c I couldn't tell which way I was supposed to be holding it, vertically or horizontally, so that the wheel was in the correct direction to fwd through songs or whatever. Also, there was a bad Paul Oakenfold video preloaded on it.

Crazy Zune Marketplace pricing scheme Posted by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes @ 7:25 am

Digg This!

One of the key selling points of the iPod (I'd go as far as to say that it's the unique selling point) is that the iTunes store is easy to use. In fact, it's very simple to use. I'd hoped that Microsoft would follow suit with the Zune Marketplace. It didn't.

Apple Matters takes a look at how the Zune Marketplace works and here's how they summarize the process:

The 5 Step Plan To Fill Your Zune With Legal Music
1. Create a free Zune account
2. Register a valid credit card
3. Buy “points” from MS
4. Scratch your head as you try to figure out why you need to buy “points” to buy songs. Why can’t you just use standard American currency? Doesn’t Microsoft accept the Dollar anymore? 5. Say “screw it” and go buy an iPod

The Zune points system works as follows:

$5 = 400 points
$15 = 1200 points
$25 = 2000 points
$50 = 4000 points

For those just wanting to buy a few tracks, it's going to be an pain in the rearThis means that a Zune Point is worth 1.25 cents and a track is priced at 79 Zune points costing 98.75 cents (so ultimately it is cheaper than the iTunes store ;-). So you have to pay up $5 before you can buy a single song. From Microsoft's point of view, that's a good thing because it means that people keep on coming back, but from the point of view of the customer it means giving Microsoft a minimum of $5 for a single purchase.

The points system is also a clever way of hiding the real price of the tunes. It'll be easier for Microsoft to add one point to the cost of a tune that it will be for Apple to add a single cent to the price, even though both would take the price of a track up to the $1 psychological barrier. (Which sounds cheaper to you - 79 Zune Points or 99 cents? 80 Zune points or $1?). It also means that you almost always end up with spare points, spare points that you won't want to waste.

Microsoft's reason for using points is that they can also be used at both the Zune Marketplace and the Xbox Live Marketplace. That might be good for Xbox Live Marketplace users but for those just wanting to buy a few tracks, it's going to be an pain in the rear.

Just saw the BIG ROCK stage setup in downtown Seattle this morning waiting for my bus wondering "WTF why is this happening on the worst weather day of the year?"

Looks like the band Secret Machines is doing a free show at Pine and 4th at 12pm, right when the worst weather this year in Seattle will start.. (heavy winds, heavy rains)... barely anything on top covering the stage. If you hear of members of the band Secret Machines getting electrified due to water/power shorts, you heard it here first.

Are you talking about Westlake Center? That is a Zune promo thing? I assumed it was just one of those random concerts that go on there. And the weather this morning has actually been the best we've had in a while, IMO. Still not exactly outdoor concert weather, but that's the price Microsoft pays for an Xmas launch.

I couldn't tell which way I was supposed to be holding it, vertically or horizontally,

It works both ways. Vertically for music, and horizontally for video. The controls (volume, etc.) reorient themselves accordingly.

My thoughts are that the Zune, while a passable iPod imitator, will suffer under the weight of MS' own ineptitude.

"As 'Black Friday' approaches and consumers line up for the Playstation 3 it looks like Zune has become an afterthought. Despite months of hype, opening Zune sales are only so-so. While Zune did reach the top 10 on Amazon's Top 25 list for electronic product sales on its first day, it quickly fell below the top 15 and continues to drop. Six separate iPod models now outsell it as well as SanDisk's e250 player. In-store sales are not much better."

I agree that the Zune is kind of lame. My excuse for having one is that they were selling the brown ones (and only the brown ones) for $100 at Radio Shack. Much cheaper than the comparable 30GB player from Apple. The software kind of sucks - I use a LAME encoder to rip music and MP3Tag to edit the tags - but the player itself seems to work fine.

o. nate, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, and I also disable that dumb wifi song-sharing feature, which only drains the batteries.

o. nate, Friday, 25 April 2008 19:37 (sixteen years ago) link

the software that comes with players always sucks tho, to be fair, up to and including itunes. creative's app is the worst, unless you count rhapsody (tied to sansa i think?).

I"m probably the only person here that has one of these and uses it regularly. It's an 80 gig Zune - the red one with the larger screen. Never used any of the wifi, video, radio, sharing, social bullshit or anything. As a basic mp3 player, it's good. The software is pretty bad, the tagging and all that stuff is slow as hell and doesn't work properly. The headphones were bad - the fabric coating on the wire used to rub against your clothes and send a scraping noise into your ears. I got rid of them almost immediately. The machine itself is nice, the screen and the interface is good, and I can't believe it's still working after 3 years. I'd rather have an ipod but this thing just keeps going.

so this lives on in software form only.
you buy (or get given one !) a windows phone and suddenly you have no option to use windows media to x-fer music over onto the phone.
instead you have to install zune.
which after a few settling in issues, i have come to like ..
but still, why the break from windows media, as given i use an old school low spec xp laptop, i would much prefer to use wm as its easy on the memory ..
