Ned, no fair picking so many songs on a OPO thread.

Roxy is one of those groups that I can't limit myself. Simply impossible. :-)

best non-Ferry song (ie lazy lyrics by Ferry on top of instrumental showcase from the band, supposedly co-written, Ferry and Manzanera) "Out of the Blue" for sheer 3 dimmensional sheen and vroom (that's the _studio_ version on the 4th album)

where do you start and what do you reject with so much extraordinary music almost compressed into the bands first 5 studio albums ? even if "Whirlwind" features slightly silly lyrics it still rocks and rhymes -- the worst song on Siren yet probably a better song than many other bands have ever achieved

RMs self-mocking "outrage" at its own audacity and "impeccable style" seems to have gone under the heads of the American audience of the day, which set against RMs achievements is a minor outrage, more a distinguishing hallmark

also note the unique approach to the problem of bass players resulting in the correct bass players for songs and a revolving door rhythm section, not manipulated as a variable so brazenly by other bands

compare these fine albums to solo Ferry minus those same musos and i think the "musical nucleus" should have been expanded for song- writing credits purposes -- that is, the semi-co-ordinated spazz of the musicians is greater than the sum with this band, the first clear "VU influenced" band

George, I don't have "Siren" but I have heard it before, or at least some of the songs, and I can't see how "Whirlwind" is the worst. I've heard "Love is the Drug" a little too much, and somehow the lyrics are excessively specific for me to want to listen to them repeatedly. I still am not entirely sure what "Whirlwind" is about, and in this case that seems to give it an advantage over "Love is the Drug." It's kind of the way I feel about some Dylan songs: the fact that they are telling a specific story makes me less interested in hearing them again and again. There's not enough room for me as a listener.

DRM, i think "you can guess the rest" goes for both songs -- I didn't notice you'd singled out "Whirlwind" at the time I posted but in my experience it was the most catchy of the songs on that record so it burnt me out on itself; the lyrics are a little glib i think once you've dispensed with the music; and given previous unsolicited exposure "Love is the Drug" had already ceased to be of any interest to me years before i'd heard the whole album so it's hard to approach as a song as i've always been sick of it, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good song as well as being an especially good fit for Roxy Music;

but you're lucky to have not got close to having finished with "Siren" yet; how i wish there was another Roxy Music album out there that i haven't worn out, although i still listen; go and buy "Siren"; some people think it's their best, and "Love is the Drug" is conveniently first eliminated

I still say "Do the Strand", but I wanted to mention the fact that I just saw Bryan Ferry hanging out the window of an SUV as said vehicle pulled out of the parking lot of the Muchmusic building. We just happened to be doing a loop of the area on the way from Comdex to a Comdex event and BAM, there he was.

It's one of the B-sides that never appeared on album -- the import box set has them all, happily. Some of them are way goofy instrumentals!

I think I could get it down to "Virginia Plain" vs. "Mother of Pearl," but those are such differing sides of what I love about Roxy -- chaotic and glammy vs. stately and elegiac -- I cannot choose between the two.
