Haha, I quite like 'put that in your pipe'. It sounds charmingly old-fashioned to me.

― Pinktits, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:17 (thirteen years ago) link
in the 90s there was this spate of people saying goodbye or leaving a party by saying "it's been real... and it's been fun... but it hasn't been real fun.." like for NO REASON other than they thought it sounded clever but it just made them sound like dicks

what I hate is how I say some of the things mentioned on this thread without thinking, because I am old as hell, and don't even realize how annoying they are - even to me. this thread helps me purge certain things from my vocabulary. Deadpan "good times" being one of them.

whenever someone says "good times" like that, it makes me want to sing the theme song to the Good Times tv show - sometimes I do, esp. the "temporary layoffs" lyric
― sarahel, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 19:44 (thirteen years ago) link
I can't think of the "temporary layoffs" lyric without the following "easy credit rip-offs" lyric.

People's choice of ironic expressions tends to inadvertently reveal things about them imo.

― Not the real Village People, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 23:52 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah Hurting, it was also weird because they didn't actually mean what they were saying - but the temptation to reuse this stupid joke was just too irresistable. it's similar to the trap that subeditors can fall into of being unable to resist making a pun or joke in a headline, which subtly alters the meaning of what they're saying and ends up misrepresenting the substance of the article underneath it.

Most of these are still in use. I'm tired of the phrases "I'm just sayin'", "You mad" and all tired-out forms of the word "hate".

A comedian friend of mine once complained about other comedians' use of the phrase "So that happened" as all-purpose filler between jokes. It was interesting because, even though I'd never really noticed it before, I could see how it could become fairly endemic (and thus annoying) within that particular culture.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 15:27 (thirteen years ago) link
I use "correct" all the time, esp over the phone, and esp with things that might cost me extra money like dealing with messed up utilities or business deals or w/e. Because a lot of the people on the other end may not speak English so fluently and it just seems clearer, more definite than "right" or "yeah" and less likely to be in any way mis-interpreted.
