I can let it slide with bureacratic stuff I guess - it just sounds like you're setting yourself up as a judge: "correct, well done. You have positively aligned with my own opinion."

I don't know, I guess! I suspect that one-syllable words are easier to mistake? I'll have to think about it.

I don't know that it would occur to me to use it like that? It's mostly for confirming factual information. Some of the phone calls I've been through with Dish Network about suspicious charges, I'd do anything to make sure my records were 100% correct.

i'm with Laurel here. Only use "correct" like that in the situations she described.

i knew a funny, loud girl who used to say "correct" when good songs started playing, in a really deadpan way. this sounds like a real annoyance, but i liked it about her

she also was an indie girl who wore a comical moustache at times, and an aspiring music critic. basically she is everything ilx makes fun of embodied into one human, but she was great!

the thing about most of these phrases is that there's always a minority of people who actually use them in a non annoying way

please describe to us these people who say "foodie," "om nom nom," "food porn" and "i just threw up in my mouth a little bit" with style and flair

i do really really hate "foodie". it's just like....why would you use such an embarrassing label for yourself. instead of just saying "i really like cooking" which actually starts a conversation. or do people say "foodie" to imply that they like spending loads of money on meals out or going to markets all weekend, or dismissing inferior and inauthentic sushi bars or whatev...

"foodie" almost as bad as foodies

Sarcastically saying "ya think?" as a sort of sarcastic "no shit."

I also hate this, which I see ALL the time in Pitchfork reviews and Videogum and the like:

Starting the second part of a thought about a person/musician with "Dude" instead of "The dude".

Something like:

"Bonnie Prince Billy puts out a lot of albums. Dude is prolific."

That drives me crazy.

And speaking of Stereogum and Videogum (and I've seen this on other sites/blogs as well), I fucking HATE how they use the phrase "you guys" in their headlines as part of a kind of "hey, we're all buddies on the internet" casual thing.

This, I think. Feel like it's not really about cooking - more like 'gourmet' for ppl who think saying 'I'm a bit of a gourmet' would sound preposterous.
