I really dug the final shot. Took it to be "Alright, so - if you took zombies out of the equation, what would be really cool about there being no people around?"

I will admit that this made the zombie apocalypse look incredibly appealing to me.

As a sidenote can I just...we were talking to a couple of friends about "Walking Dead" this weekend, they hadn't seen it but they kept saying "Well, if it's scary then I won't watch it. I like funny zombies."

Zombiests.

Actually I think they meant more they like Shaun of the Dead over something like Dawn of the Dead because there's humor but still. Zombies are cool. Don't they see?

I have to be for real here for a second: I am not watching this shit on Sunday nights anymore. My brain gets going too much with this show, and I never get a good night sleep. All thinking about "Did I lock the back door?" and "What if Rock Carrying Zombie says 'Fuck a Door. I'm a go straight through the picture window.'?" and "If there is a zombie apocalypse, do I go towards downtown LA, the desert, or the mountains? Because fuck the west side."

For me, the disturbing thing about a zombie apocalypse is not the zombies themselves, since they are massively improbable. What's not so improbable is the breakdown of every institution created to protect citizens from complete meltdown and Lord of the Flies shit. Who needs zombies when our power grid is so vulnerable and outdated?

kenan, Monday, 8 November 2010 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Everything about a zombie apocalypse is cool. I would be fine if a reincarnated version or another dimension version of me gets to be part of such apocalypse. I don't think there is any way I'll stop watching this show at this point

4.7 million viewers for the second episode. AMC has renewed it for a 13 episode 2nd season.

Daaaaamn. That's a crazy number for cable.

Very happy to see them deviate from the funny books, even if it wasn't a great episode in itself.

Last shot is the freedom-porn of most post-apocalyptic fiction, innit? Aside from the vampire-zombies of I Am Legend, I thought Will Smith's life looked pretty nice (at least for a short time).

Really, I thought Will Smith's life in that movie was depressing as shit

Kept expecting a zombie to pop up from the back seat.

Does the guy playing Shane remind anyone else of a young Fred Ward?

Running around Time Square hunting deer, chilling out to some Bob with your awesome German Shepherd. I mean, yeah, the complete lack of human companionship would be rough after a while - but for about a month having an entire city to yourself would be A+++++++.

Didn't like the way capable, tough, non-stereotype black guy Tyreese in the comic seems to have become ham-fisted stereotype 'T-Dawg'

The guy is ham-fisted, I mean.

I didn't even put that together. Is Tyreese in the group from the start of the comic or do they run across him later? Maybe the real Tyreese will show.

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Monday, 8 November 2010 23:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Maybe I'm wrong--I just checked the comic, and Tyreese and his group of survivors don't turn up until issue 7 or so.

Stereotypes aside, I can't see them trading a badass former NFL player for a chubby dude in a Kangol.

my favorite moment in the comic is around like issue 40 when he literally has rick scream "ITS US! WE'RE THE WALKING DEAD!"
hahaha please tell me this actually happened!

lol that guy being named 'Tyrese' always bothered me, way more than T-Dawg possibly could :peers into kirkman's brain and notices he has never met a black man ever:

the dialogue and yeah the ring stuff was just clumsy as hell throughout this episode. apparently some of the upcoming episodes aren't written by darabont, and I hope that becomes the trend, because I was cringing my way through this last one.

Clay, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 01:37 (thirteen years ago) link

tyrese is yet to come.
i am continuing to hope for better dialogue
do not think i'll be seeing that anytime soon
just want to get the show on the road and get past some initial character deaths really

"Dead Set" was IFC's 5-ep zombie series that just aired -- zombie plague as reality show, or reality show as zombie plague. Not as arch as that description makes it sound -- works both as social comment and straight horror movie. Well-acted, well-written, well-done.

Technically it's from 2008: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Set_(TV_series)

oh yeah, so I just learned. Also apparently the writer, Charlie Brooker, is famous if you are from England.

I spend so much time watching tv shows that I don't watch a ton of movies any more, not like I used to. And it's not because the movies aren't good. It's just I can't *not* watch my tv shows.

This. I also don't listen to much music anymore. :-(

Re: The rock-using zombies from upthread, Romero's zombies got progressively smarter. In "Night," one zombie can use a rock. By "Day," Bub the zombie is trained to use a tape recorded and figures out how to use a gun to kill Capt. Rhodes (whom he then ironically salutes). In "Land," they can use guns and become organized.

This second ep was OK but did go by fast. Not sure what to make of the freshly added racist, or the fact that he was left behind handcuffed to that pipe with a hacksaw nearby a la "Mad Max." Wasn't it Chekov who said something about a hacksaw in the first act? Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if racist dude makes another appearance, either alive or dead.

BTW, I love the gore effects in this, but the gore sound effects suck. They're all cartoonishly "squish crunch squish slop squish." Greg Nicotero needs to recommend a better foley guy.
