"Dead Set" was IFC's 5-ep zombie series that just aired -- zombie plague as reality show, or reality show as zombie plague. Not as arch as that description makes it sound -- works both as social comment and straight horror movie. Well-acted, well-written, well-done.

I spend so much time watching tv shows that I don't watch a ton of movies any more, not like I used to. And it's not because the movies aren't good. It's just I can't *not* watch my tv shows.

Re: The rock-using zombies from upthread, Romero's zombies got progressively smarter. In "Night," one zombie can use a rock. By "Day," Bub the zombie is trained to use a tape recorded and figures out how to use a gun to kill Capt. Rhodes (whom he then ironically salutes). In "Land," they can use guns and become organized.

This second ep was OK but did go by fast. Not sure what to make of the freshly added racist, or the fact that he was left behind handcuffed to that pipe with a hacksaw nearby a la "Mad Max." Wasn't it Chekov who said something about a hacksaw in the first act? Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if racist dude makes another appearance, either alive or dead.

BTW, I love the gore effects in this, but the gore sound effects suck. They're all cartoonishly "squish crunch squish slop squish." Greg Nicotero needs to recommend a better foley guy.

That'd be a bummer, though I understand if the show needs a proper villain to hang around. Though really, the COUNTLESS FLESHEATING ZOMBIES should be good enough.

Zombie stories totally need human villains! Zombies are more a background enviornmental threat and context than an actual villain.

honestly it hadn't even occurred to me but i guess a lot of the potential fun in a show like this is that human characers can recur as zombies later on, i like that idea.

i guess "the real enemy is OURSELVES" is an inevitable theme in stuff like this but i was bummed that they laid it on a bit thick in the 2nd episode

i fast fowarded through the credits and my remote decided it didn't want to stop for the preview and i was like oh okay i don't need to know anything about next week anyway

people who've read the comic - is there any reason to expect anything from this show (twist, detail, situation, anything) that hasn't already been done in a popular zombie movie?

i mean other than having no music soundtrack until the closing trip-hop number right before the credits.

croupier: um, sorta? some of the zombie rules are fun. some of the character relationships in the macro sense are cool. the jail setpiece is interesting. don't expect quantum leaps; what sets this apart from zombie movie standards is that uh it's really long

would be awesome if a couple episodes ahead the sheriff goes back to his tent for a moment of peace, looks around, and opens up a scrapbook he's been compiling filled with the driver's licenses of all the zombies he's killed.

and then when he finally reunites with his family they spend long nights by the fire, paging through daddy's scrapbook of dead zombie licenses

meanwhile shane has a similar scrapbook of all the women he's slept with who have dead husbands.

Anyone who saw the, uh, bathtub sequence from Breaking Bad S1 will know that AMC isn't shy about gore.

Can anyone confirm/deny that this is only a six episode season? I'll be super bummed if it is. Need something to watch on Sundays to fill the Breaking Bad void.

It went quickly despite very little happening. Been watching Boardwalk Empire after this in the previous two weeks, but switched the order around this time and the Walking Dead didn't come off as well. :/

yeah, the ladeez scrubbing clothes and giggling about vibrators was ugh. still really enjoying this despite the occasional cringe-inducing scene. it goes by quickly, i find myself a little bummed when it's over.

I'm still an ep behind but the hacking up zombie & covering themselves with gore scene was lol gross.

I had just finished dinner & felt a mite queasy after that

haven't seen the third episode, but watched the second last night. disappointed at the absence of: inventive special effects, interesting characters, the sorts of things i like paying attention to. dull as dirt, grodyness of wiping oneself down with rotting guts aside.

Don't expect the characters to get any more interesting in the third episode.

I think I'm done. A good survival story requires someone to root for and I really don't care whether Racist Guy, Sexist Guy(s), Woman Who's Cheating On Her Husband, Woman Who's Being Beaten By Her Husband, Or Woman Who Likes Mermaids makes it.

I missed the first episode, but after watching the most recent two last night I'm totally pumped about this show. Love that it's only 6 episodes this season, too.

Ratings actually up on last week to 5.1 million. Skewing male significantly, with 2.1 million of the 3.3 million demo being of that gender.

I wish the zombies had eaten officer-wife-cheater and Mrs-Husband-cheater when they were screwing in the woods.

however now we know that she wasn't really cheating because she was told her husband was dead! not sure i like that explanation, though, since it makes shane less of a sympathetic character and more of a clear villain.

I'm loving this. Most of the complaints are pretty valid, but this show's still entertaining the hell out of me. Shane's shaping up to be the most interesting/sympathetic character, which is kind of surprising.

there is still time for doggy style sex in the woods with zombies running rampant throughout.
