pretty sure they're conflating the later mayor character with the dude on the roof and he'll BE FOLLOWING THE SURVIVORS oh shockers

That'd be a bummer, though I understand if the show needs a proper villain to hang around. Though really, the COUNTLESS FLESHEATING ZOMBIES should be good enough.

"men can be worse than zombies" is a continuous law in the kirkman books

Zombie stories totally need human villains! Zombies are more a background enviornmental threat and context than an actual villain.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if racist dude makes another appearance, either alive or dead.

honestly it hadn't even occurred to me but i guess a lot of the potential fun in a show like this is that human characers can recur as zombies later on, i like that idea.

i guess "the real enemy is OURSELVES" is an inevitable theme in stuff like this but i was bummed that they laid it on a bit thick in the 2nd episode

deej otm (some dude), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 16:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd bet he's coming back alive. That was a Significant Hacksaw.

So you guys didn't see the "scenes from next episode" bit then.

i fast fowarded through the credits and my remote decided it didn't want to stop for the preview and i was like oh okay i don't need to know anything about next week anyway

people who've read the comic - is there any reason to expect anything from this show (twist, detail, situation, anything) that hasn't already been done in a popular zombie movie?

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean other than having no music soundtrack until the closing trip-hop number right before the credits.

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 16:37 (thirteen years ago) link

turns out it was all a dream

I have no problem watching them smear zombie guts all over themselves but a line like "if I ever find my family I’m going to tell them about wayne" really makes me cringe

I have no problem watching them smear zombie guts all over themselves but ruining the edge of that ax by chopping up a zombie on a concrete floor really made me cringe.

Kerm, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 16:44 (thirteen years ago) link

croupier: um, sorta? some of the zombie rules are fun. some of the character relationships in the macro sense are cool. the jail setpiece is interesting. don't expect quantum leaps; what sets this apart from zombie movie standards is that uh it's really long

a pun based on a popular ilx meme (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 16:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i was afraid of that

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

if yer really curious, there's compilations of the book readily available or single issue cbrs all over the internet

In any case this is powers of ten better than Rubicon and is thus far the most fun horror tv show i've seen.

would be awesome if a couple episodes ahead the sheriff goes back to his tent for a moment of peace, looks around, and opens up a scrapbook he's been compiling filled with the driver's licenses of all the zombies he's killed.

omar little, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link

and then when he finally reunites with his family they spend long nights by the fire, paging through daddy's scrapbook of dead zombie licenses

death panel of the mods (Edward III), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link

meanwhile shane has a similar scrapbook of all the women he's slept with who have dead husbands.

omar little, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:13 (thirteen years ago) link

some crossover there no doubt

Zombie Chekhov's Significant Hacksaw (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link

it is pretty brutal isn't it? thought them smearing guts all over themselves and hacking up that body was pretty full on for tv...

i've been dreaming about corpse mutilation on tv for years now

Anyone who saw the, uh, bathtub sequence from Breaking Bad S1 will know that AMC isn't shy about gore.

Simon H., Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Can anyone confirm/deny that this is only a six episode season? I'll be super bummed if it is. Need something to watch on Sundays to fill the Breaking Bad void.

Darin, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Confirm, it's six eps.
Did not know this: "The series is completely shot on 16 mm film."
That's kinda rare these days, right?

Women should be way more offended by sub-Sex and the City (bad enough as it is) vibrator talk than any 'can't turn off the light' metaphor.

Gukbe, Monday, 15 November 2010 04:11 (thirteen years ago) link

dopey dialogue aside, this looks like a good six episode/issue arc; ep 3 was an improvement on ep 2 for my money

forksclovetofu, Monday, 15 November 2010 04:18 (thirteen years ago) link

It went quickly despite very little happening. Been watching Boardwalk Empire after this in the previous two weeks, but switched the order around this time and the Walking Dead didn't come off as well. :/

Gukbe, Monday, 15 November 2010 04:20 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, the ladeez scrubbing clothes and giggling about vibrators was ugh. still really enjoying this despite the occasional cringe-inducing scene. it goes by quickly, i find myself a little bummed when it's over.

I'm still an ep behind but the hacking up zombie & covering themselves with gore scene was lol gross.

haven't seen the third episode, but watched the second last night. disappointed at the absence of: inventive special effects, interesting characters, the sorts of things i like paying attention to. dull as dirt, grodyness of wiping oneself down with rotting guts aside.

naked human hands and a foam rubber head (contenderizer), Monday, 15 November 2010 06:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't expect the characters to get any more interesting in the third episode.

I think I'm done. A good survival story requires someone to root for and I really don't care whether Racist Guy, Sexist Guy(s), Woman Who's Cheating On Her Husband, Woman Who's Being Beaten By Her Husband, Or Woman Who Likes Mermaids makes it.

lindseykai, Monday, 15 November 2010 15:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I missed the first episode, but after watching the most recent two last night I'm totally pumped about this show. Love that it's only 6 episodes this season, too.

Ratings actually up on last week to 5.1 million. Skewing male significantly, with 2.1 million of the 3.3 million demo being of that gender.

I wish the zombies had eaten officer-wife-cheater and Mrs-Husband-cheater when they were screwing in the woods.

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:17 (thirteen years ago) link

however now we know that she wasn't really cheating because she was told her husband was dead! not sure i like that explanation, though, since it makes shane less of a sympathetic character and more of a clear villain.

omar little, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:19 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm loving this. Most of the complaints are pretty valid, but this show's still entertaining the hell out of me. Shane's shaping up to be the most interesting/sympathetic character, which is kind of surprising.

KyleP (Princess TamTam), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:22 (thirteen years ago) link

there is still time for doggy style sex in the woods with zombies running rampant throughout.

Mark Chmuras Hot Tub Crime Machine (chrisv2010), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah that didn't sit well with me either omar... I hope they don't go the route of making Shane an unambiguous villain like in the comic. That line felt like it was stuffed in to remind the audience that this is a bad guy

KyleP (Princess TamTam), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:24 (thirteen years ago) link

"screw the zombies im taking you balls deep"

Mark Chmuras Hot Tub Crime Machine (chrisv2010), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:25 (thirteen years ago) link

What's going on with Shane's nose? Is he an ex-boxer?

I just started reading the comic. Dialog is pretty dire...but I'll hang

"my inlaws live in Atlanta...that's only a 5hr drive from here. That's probablywhere my wife went"

I'm going to shoot in the face

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Lol Chris i love how easy it is to get you to work blue. It's awesome.

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i can sort of see the lack of nuance people complain about, this isn't mad men or breaking bad, and yet i have found each episode exciting from start to finish. i guess it works the plot tension well and it's got good drama and action. character wise i agree nobody is entirely sympathetic, but the group dynamics are interesting.
