Me on Love and Rockets, the album

I need to hear this.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll have to dig up that interview again. ;-) But IIRC it's Alan Moore as well, unsurprisingly.

But then again, on the downside, Motorcycle

DOWNSIDE? That's a great song! Loud as fuck.

I need to hear this.

Yes you do.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I think yours is the only even semi-positive review I've read of that album, though. Otherwise I would've gotten it ages ago.

Is Earth, Sun, Moon not actually one of their best, then? Maybe that was the wrong album of theirs to start out with.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, but that VIDEO.... Sigh. OK, I know the bloke who did it as well, but it's still inexcusable. I'm sorry, it had nice guitars, but Daniel's weedy little girlyboy voice going "meeeeee and my motorcycle" was just pathetic. I did a helltape which mashed that and The Motorcycle Song by Arlo Guthrie together.

x-post. The one you want is [[Express]] - I got the reissue recently and my god, what a gorgeous psychedelic mess of an album. Lovely.

We might force K8 to change her name to Marie. (kate), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, but that VIDEO....

That, I agree, was substandard.

I like Earth/Sun/Moon a lot but it is easily the calmest of their albums, and less kaleidoscopic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, we used to call Earth/Sun/Moon "Waiting for the Floyd". And I don't mean that in their Lucifer Sam-covering way, I mean baaaaad Floyd.

We might force K8 to change her name to Marie. (kate), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I rather liked Earth/Sun/Moon. And "Love Hysteria" is just shit.

Also, David J relinquished his claim to being the best Bauhaus alum when he released "For Bauhaus Lovers," which is a legacy cash-in if I've ever seen one.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I am going to JW this thread until you all admit that David J is the coolest.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:27 (eighteen years ago) link

if we're really talking solo work, I think love and rockets have the edge but only slightly. mind I didn't listen to anything past the self titled record. so it probably evens out since murphy's put out a ton of junk since holy smoke (possibly including holy smoke)

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:29 (eighteen years ago) link

but I guess the best rockets and tones songs beat the best murphy songs so ash wins

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Fuck "Slender Fungus" for ruining what is essentially otherwise a 100% strike-rate output for ToT.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:33 (eighteen years ago) link

What the hell is wrong with you? "Slender Fungus" is completely goddamn brilliant! I will never understand the hate for a song with one of the weirdest percussion tracks ever set against soothing chants.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:34 (eighteen years ago) link

"Slender Fungus" is how I'd describe a lot of Tom Petty.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Slender Fungus is how I'd describe Paris Hilton

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:39 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost...well, that too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:40 (eighteen years ago) link

"So Alive" is as bad as "Motorcyle" is great....which is fucking considerable.

so alive has the worst opening lyrics of any song ever

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll always have fond memories of "So Alive" because it and "Love Song," both chasing each other up the pop charts, were placed ad infinitum by my local Top 40 station around Bobby Brown and Roxette.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:42 (eighteen years ago) link

It sounds like an approrpriate song for such a title, which really can't be a good thing.

I must tap you gently on the head with a brickbat.

Picking "Motorcycle" over "So Alive" is evidence of senility and/or encroaching deafness. "Motorcycle" is a painfully stupid, embarrassing train wreck of nonsense that is about on par with the worst of Justin Timberlake in terms of "rank pile of shit"-ness.

Anyone with sense is going to pick "????" off that album.

Daniel Ash in a heartbeat. Peter Murphy has never really interested me away from Bauhaus.

Dan (Motorcycle: The Worst L&R Song Ever Recorded) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:51 (eighteen years ago) link

I dare say that "Cry Me A River" by same is also a quadrillion times better than "So Alive".

It's not that the lyrics of "Motorcyle" are anything great -- it's simply THAT huge fucking guitar sound. So unweildy and massive and great -- that you can't appreciate it only underscores your (typical) failure to understand that which rocks.

Anyone with sense is going to pick "????" off that album.

Do you mean "Jungle Law"? It's fucking brilliant.

Daniel Ash in a heartbeat. Peter Murphy has never really interested me away from Bauhaus.

I like quite a bit of Murphy's solo stuff, but sort've lost interest circa Holy Smoke.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:57 (eighteen years ago) link

that you can't appreciate it only underscores your (typical) failure to understand that which rocks.

That which rocks is usually synonymous with that which sucks.

Dan (For Reals) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Do you suck rock?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I am not a crackhead, no.

Dan (Just Say No) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:13 (eighteen years ago) link

YUMMY SUGAR FROSTED CRACK.

I disagree with Dan on the worth of "Motorcycle" but I like me the big riffs, as Alex notes. But I do highly agree with Dan on the worth of "So Alive."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Ehh...I guess. I just had a hard time believing that the same cats who recorded "So Alive" also birthed brilliant stuff like "Stigmata Martyr" and "Swing the Heartache," etc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

So what's wrong with variety? Besides, the whole point of Bauhaus WAS variety. "Mask" the song would have been nowhere near as good if that shockingly beautiful acoustic guitar line hadn't appeared out of nowhere towards the end.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll tell you what's great: "No Big Deal."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Hehehe. Yes. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:45 (eighteen years ago) link

"No Big Deal" is extremely overrated even if it is catchy as hell.

Dan (Truth In Advertising) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think I've heard the song in 15 years.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:57 (eighteen years ago) link

"No Big Deal" is extremely overrated

Not NEARLY as overrated as "So Alive".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 November 2005 21:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I think the important thing to recognise here is not whether or Pete Murphy is fractionally > Daniel Ash in any particular respect; or indeed whether David J's haircut is significantly > Kevin Haskins' trousers; but the fact that Bauhaus >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> absolutely anything that any of it's individual members have ever been involved with either individually, with other people, or in any combination other than Bauhaus, ever.

""Slender Fungus" is completely goddamn brilliant!"

Heed Ned well - for he speaks with great wisdom and perceptiveness.

"You'd describe Tom Petty as a shining ball of meat?"

Well, maybe not: but I've long had my suspicions that he sucks the toes that linger round your feet - and indeed, I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that has kissed a fish inside a stolen jeep on at least one occasion. Possibly even more often than that.

According to jazzbutcher.com, which is pretty reliably complete, David & Kevin were conspirators, but not Kevin.

Anyway, Ash - no doubt. Pete is a clown.

THE BUBBLEMEN PWN ALL!!!!

On planet girl, we go for a whirl... etc. oh yeah, best spin off ever.

Daniel was never involved in the Jazz Butcher. David played on a couple of albums and tours, I think Kevin did one session at least. But usually drums were played by Owen P. Jones (Apparently they woke up one day and found him living in their house "ask him if he plays drums!" said Pat "But he's got a beard!" protested Max. "Well, tell him to shave it off, and he's in," replied Pat - goes the story) and guitar was played the stupendously fantastic Max Eider.

More talk about the stupendously fantastic Max Eider, who shits all over everyone mentioned so far.

when something smacks of something (dave225.3), Friday, 4 November 2005 12:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I wouldn't go THAT far.

However, Max Eider does rule, and "Drink" is the best song ever about the joys of sweet alcohol.

"Falling apart in bars
I like to suffer for my art
Just one more before we part..."

(For the uninitiated, imagine this being delivered and sung in the kind of light-hearted, breezy 30s jazz that Eric Idle specializes in for his Monty Python songs.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 November 2005 12:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Soul Happy Hour is the best song ever about drink.

when something smacks of something (dave225.3), Friday, 4 November 2005 13:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Clearly the only way to settle this is to have a FAP where we play nothing but drinking songs and then proceed to get drunk.

four years pass...

Any deeper thoughts on the Daniel Ash solo discography? I mean, Coming Down sounds alright enough (if not a patch on anything Love and Rockets released before their last couple), but I can't find much use for Ash's next two solo albums. And it's not for lack of trying, either -- I'm a pretty big fan of Bauhaus (obv.), L&R, Tones on Tail, Dali's Car, Peter solo... just can't get into the Ash solo stuff very much.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 25 February 2010 19:00 (fourteen years ago) link

peter solo = give me Love Hysteria and Deep and that's all I'll ever really need

Tones on Tail > Bauhaus and I think I appreciate daniel ash's role in bauhaus more than peter murphy's so I have to go with daniel ash here.
