the kid = Carl, which is a hilarious name for a kid and the only thing i consistently lol at during this show

yeah who the hell names anyone Carl.

i dunno, i just find it amusing for some reason

or Russ

Rick's a big Aqua Teen Hunger Force fan? Hmm, probably not.

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Just taken in context with the rest of the show it portrays the wife as submissive and not necessarily strong, but again that's largely due to lazy stereotypes and lack of development thus far.
Seriously, this is otm. Also Rick has this obvious macho thing going on and that kid is always like DADDY and you cannot tell me that they are doing anything out of the ordinary wrt gender stereotypes here

i'm not saying it's offensive, it's just boring

― The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, November 17, 2010 12:17 PM (4 minutes ago) Bookmark

Do you really need some crazy grand guignol homo orgy to not be bored by something? I bought into the reunion scene, emotionally I mean. Couldn't help but think about when I was a kid and how sad I'd get when my dad was gone for weeks at a time on business ):

KyleP (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

what's your problem?!
no, i don't -- i just find stereotypes this broad kind of boring

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

A child being excited to see his presumed-dead father... what a snooze of a stereotype!!!! Wake me up when they're done with all these shitty HUMAN EMOTIONS beep boop

KyleP (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 18:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Dude, the characters are stereotypes, the story thus far zombie boilerplate. You want some HUMAN EMOTIONS, read "The Road." This is short-cut, broad-stroke television, through and through, as short-cuts/broad-strokes is what gets viewers. But if you look at past serialized shows, sometimes the writers don't bring their "A" game until season 2, as if they're not willing to get totally invested in a story that may get canned after a mere 6 eps. So yes, stereotypes and boilerplate are a problem, but they're not a real problem unless they keep up through the next season. Keeping the books in mind, I suspect they thankfully won't.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 18:29 (thirteen years ago) link

TamTam, I don't think anyone's dumping on you specifically for having an emotional response to the father/son relationship. Lechera's talking bigger picture, and isn't into the stereotypes of the show in general, not just the father son but the whole pot o' zombies.

Let's all take a step back for a second, maybe?

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 18:32 (thirteen years ago) link

and its only a tv show....

Mark Chmuras Hot Tub Crime Machine (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Tamtam, you can have an emotional response to whatever you want, but that doesn't mean that (1) i need to have one or (2) that if i don't, i am a gigantic superfreak.

taking a step back seems like a good idea

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I was just needling The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera) for the purpose of humor, I thought all my really exaggerated misrepresentations of her/his arguments got that across, sorry. "and that kid is always like DADDY" is still a weird thing to call the show out for. Should he have met his dead dad with an icy stare and dryly said "hello father"? And you literally were calling for a pagan orgy earlier, but now it's just "oh I don't respond to stereotypes"? C'mon.

A salient point was raised earlier. If this camp of survivors knows how bad it is in Atlanta, why the hell are they still so close thereto? It didn't seem like there were that many zombos in the town where the story initially started, right? Wouldn't something like that be smarter than right outside zombo central?

Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 19:41 (thirteen years ago) link

lol "zombo"

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I think they were staying far enough away for safety, close enough for Glenn & crew to go to town for supply runs?

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, clearly they're about to move, what with the "wow, a zombie near camp!" epiphany.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 19:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually, that's one thing that did niggle at me a little... would the supplies you get in downtown Atlanta be any better than what you'd get at a suburban Wal Mart? I feel like probably not, especially for their needs.

Onigaga (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 20:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Hah, maybe they'll all eventually wagon train to Bentonville, Arkansas!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link

A long time ago I happened to be kicking around "last man on earth" story ideas at the same time I was working at a grocery wholesaler. The warehouse-exploration possibilities were pretty ripe for terror.

Could have sworn in this past ep when womenfolk were chatting about what they missed most, one said "texting." Coffee maker/texting/vibrator pretty much covers it, though.

re: sex argument - having sex in end of the world scenarios isn't uncommon

dirty southern assholes and the cowboy policeman seems to be the atmosphere of the show so far... it's different than other zombie shows/movies that I know of and I like that the show has this extra layer of above zombie apocalypse stuff. but I can see myself being sort of disappointed if the sexism gets worse or continues to pop up at least once in every single episode. it's more prevalent than racism at this point. it wouldn't be so bad if it was limited to only a few terrible people - which is why I'm hoping that Shane isn't going to be betrayed anymore sexist than he already is

meanwhile I do hope that Carl's character gets developed some more because he has favorite potential. some other characters might have potential as well but I'm not really seeing it yet

I don't think the main guy is going to become much more of a character than the straight-man hero type (with little flaws here and there to humanize him). He is going to be kind of boring in that way. the tough decisions he'll probably eventually have to make will build up his character and make him more likable. and he'll probably get some bad ass kill scenes as well

if next week's episode is anything like the preview then we'll be back to zombie survival mode which will undoubtedly be enjoyable. throw in some good special effects, cinematography, sets, zombie makeup, creepiness and badass kill scenes and I'll be set. it doesn't take much for me to enjoy zombie apocalypse stuff

Life! The Story of Life (CaptainLorax), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

One did indeed say texting. Which I would miss, but not nearly as much as the whole "safety and not having to worry about getting eaten" thing. Yeesh.

Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

A lot of these post-apocalyptic survival questions (rural vs. suburban vs. city for supplies, etc.) are what I wish the show were going to deal with. The comic has done a shitty job of it, I was/am hoping the longer form of a TV series might do better.

"Eventually I hope he gets an eye-patch, too."
lol, it happens to the main meanie in the comic!

BTW the zombie lynch mob in this episode was kinda upsetting? Like just for a second you're like "aw, poor zombie just wanna eat a little venison; why you gotta beat him like that?"

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, it took them an awful long time to dispatch the zombie. So maybe they were enjoying it?

re: sex argument - having sex in end of the world scenarios isn't uncommon

No doubt ... if the world is ending. But when the world has ended and you've survived solely on speed, strength and wits? And sudden, horrible death can be around any corner? Anyway, small matter. Why do I seem to recall the Shane/wife thing in the comic being slightly less than fully consensual?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 22:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the overtone in the comics is that she's just fucking him because he's become the protector, not because she's enjoying it (as she appeared to be during the fifteen seconds of missionary before doggie)

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 22:57 (thirteen years ago) link

er, 'fucked him' I don't remember the comic ever saying it happened more than once

Pretty good episode, IMO.

Hah, yeah, I'll say.

Didn't dig that episode as much... was kinda WTFing at the vatos the whole time. Stuff like the opening scene... I get that it was just stuffed in so we'd care when that girl died, but the show hasn't really earned scenes like that since we don't know or care about the characters... I couldn't even remember the names of the sisters.

Yeah, I don't really have a problem with them wanting to focus on the human drama - can you think of any great zombie story where that wasn't one of the most important elements? - it just has to be well done. I just didn't buy into it so much in this episode.

Onigaga (Princess TamTam), Monday, 22 November 2010 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link

in a perfect world, i think six episodes of the sheriff finding his way to the family and then a full season of "life in the encampment" woulda been the right way to go, but everything I read leads me to believe they had this set up to cut bait if it was a ratings disaster so they likely needed to rush out a solid one shot storyline for DVD resale in worst case scenario.
My hope is that, now that they have solid ground underneath them and a lot of potential storylines old and new to move into, that they take their time and build up characters and explore relationships and GET BETTER WRITERS
clearly we've got the "what do i do with the body when i know it's going to turn" and the inevitable return of merle on the horizon but if we can

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

put the survivors on the road to the prison or the farm, put merle down or elevate him to a boogeyman either way and get moving into season two, I'll be looking forward to better storylines ahead.
