"free" is an overstatement; gamesharing lets you get PSN stuff for 1/5th of the price (i.e. Steam sale rates). for instance, on my current share group I'm paying $7 total for Pac-Man CE DX, Spelunker (sadly not Spelunky), and Dead Nation.

Can everyone in the group play these games at the same time?

yep - the only exceptions are Warhawk (although the expansions can be shared), GT5 Prologue, and Final Fight: Double Impact for some reason

three weeks pass...

IMPORTANT MOVE REVIEW

So I get this thing. Controller takes the best part of three hours to charge. Fine. Then I plug the camera into the FRONT of the PS3 and already my nicely balanced setup looks like a kids' bedroom. Then I have to find a place to stick the camera that's not taken up by the 3D sensor or the Wii sensor, and because the base is so narrow and the cord sticking out the back is so thick and stiff it won't stay straight. Whatever. So I stick in the demo disc and select Tumbler, and it tells me it needs to install the game before it will let me play. 725 Mb later it wants to install a software update as well.

The 3D mode in Tumbler is inhibited slightly by the reflection of the giant blue ball in the screen, which is so bright that it also prevents me seeing which button is which on the controller. Press the X button? Duh, okay. The game itself is not too bad, and quite effective in 3D. Control is tighter than the Wii but unacceptably laggy.

Beat Sketcher is shithouse. If you want to click a button on the screen you've got to either jump in the air or virtually slam it on the floor.

EyePet told me to clear away furniture and distracting objects, and to make sure the room is not too bright and not too dark. I don't know why I need to know about Sony's sensor problems, but okay. Then it told me by unskippable video how to set up the Move which is already set up, plus demanding that I place the camera at knee height (I thought MS was the only company to make stupid sensor demands) and angled toward the floor. Right now it's telling me to touch the floor with the controller, and when I do it insists I'm lying. Having been stuck in this loop for five minutes I have had enough and am putting it back in the box.

I've heard that Kinect is much, much better than Move, if you're just comparing the two.

everything about Kinect from the name to the marketing campaign to the actual device itself is indefensibly asinine

downloaded Sonic Adventure, 'cause I thought it would be like a basic Sonic game (really don't know my Sega history, other than the awesome single disc collection) - thought it would save me popping in the Sega disc if I wanted to play Sonic - fired it up and gahh - what a piece of crap - not fun at all - money wasted... Metal Slug was worth every penny, though.

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 23 December 2010 14:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I have the fondest memories of Sonic Adventure from 10 years ago. Not sure why. You routinely fall through gaps in the scenery and die, you can't control the fast characters even in very spacious landscapes, what you're supposed to be doing is not clear, etc etc. If this indeed was the quality of the first round of Dreamcast games, it's no wonder the thing crashed and burned so quickly.

So it's still worth $7 for the trip down memory lane (and to avoid the hassle of finding and unpacking the DC) but wow. Think twice. If you've never played it before and are not extremely curious, stay away.

The breads are OK but the the crumpet freaks me out (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 23 December 2010 20:00 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, it wasn't that great even back then tbh. it should be lumped with the other more forgettable DC launch titles like Dino Crisis

cancelling lovefilm, selection of available films is just shit. even when you find one on the website available to 'watch online' half the time it turns out to be pay-per-view and not streamable on ps3.

yeah I'm doing that, I'd rather spend £6 a month renting a film from the PSN store and it being a film I want to watch right now and not some random pick off a list.

if you could spend your credits on online films but the list of watch online films is sub par.

I have demons souls. I don't know what else to get.

not yet, but it's coming and it's coming soon. personally since I actually have a job and GameFly I'm way more excited by the prospect of installing support for new video codecs/region-unlocking on DVDs/ripping games to the HD rather than play from the disc.

Demons souls is so so good but insanely hard. I'm at the point where i keep running away back to the nexus every time i get a decent amount of souls because the threat of dying is completely overwhelming. Getting a bit boring because i'm killing the same fifteen skeletons over and over and running away but can't bring myself to venture forward. Such a wonderful opressive atomsphere.

So excited abt god of war 3 and uncharted 2 but the postal service is an absolute disgrace, shoulda had them days ago.

Is there any heavy rain love on ilg? Really loved fahrenheit or at least the first half hour of it and i'm assuming heavy rain is the same but better?

toastmodernist, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 11:33 (thirteen years ago) link

thre's a thread for it - i think the consensus (which i share) is that it's a flawed but very entertaining game. i think it's totally worth playing - for the mood, for the unique controls, for the "wtf will happen next" feeling.. i got hooked on it, in that "just one more episode" wire type of way

a list of PS3 games which can be played with a fightstick (not including actual fighting games):

- Pac-Man CE DX
- Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
- NBA Jam
- Tetris

to be continued

The Playstation 3 is currently a game system which now runs a gang of emulators:

http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2011/01/10/homebrew-and-emulators-appear-on-ps3-what-will-sony-do/

not dicking around w/ haXoring until there's a way to automatically disable the game list reporting (which is apparently how Sony gonna gitcha), but if this means I can play MAME on my TV with my joystick I am alllllllll for it

FART MAGNET STUDIOS IS SCREWING US AGAIN!!!1!1!!!1!! (jamescobo), Monday, 10 January 2011 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah totally. If I can get it running MAME maybe I'll actually have a reason to turn the thing on now and again. Cos that list of exclusives definitely isn't going to do the job.

Looking forward to XBMC for PS3 actually. And it'll be nice if somebody hacks PS2 compatibility back into it.

- Last Guardian
- SoC and Ico HD
- Uncharted 3
- Beyond Good and Evil HD

Those are 4/5 games right there that I'm going to buy sight unseen when they come out

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 10:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I never liked BG&E very much but it's good to see it finally cop some recognition to meet its reputation. Never played SoC and only spent 10 mins with Ico so particularly pumped for those.

i've never played the uncharted games. played the demo of the first one once and just kept on getting killed (n.b. i am not a noob), lots of my friends swear by them though, so maybe i should give them a shot.
