However it is, to my chagrin this reminded me of that annoying Phoenix song that's impossible to banish from one's head after hearing it:
"(boop boop) "Everything is everything" etc etc
I wish I hadn't read this thread

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:51 (nineteen years ago) link

The vocals are male and the sound is sorta dirty south.
Sorry about that thea.

one year passes...
It's been another year and I still can't fucking ID this song.
HELP HELP HELP.
I really need to know. I have some kind of fucked up memory of Stone Gossard (?) from Pearl Jam (???) onstage in a live perf. video and that chorus is still stuck in my head. Impossible to google.
HELP HELP HELP.

Mark G, Thursday, 4 June 2009 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Wouldn't the "google leads me nowhere" mean there's a lot of misheard words? So some of those lyrics aren't right. Let's see...

http://www.mp3lyrics.org/m/mack-10/do/ ("everything is everything" would have to be "do the damn thang" for this one, no Fleetwoods or chickens) ?

Not Youngbloodz
Definitely not Trae and 3-6.
This would've come out between 90 and 94?

pending echeques (forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 June 2009 01:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Pretty sure those lyrics are right. Pretty sure stone gossard was in the video or at least on stage for a live version. I want to say it's Outkast. It's not outkast. This has been bothering me for five years.

pending echeques (forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 June 2009 01:34 (fourteen years ago) link

i do like that youngbloodz cut tho'.

pending echeques (forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 June 2009 01:37 (fourteen years ago) link

OK, next time someone interviews Stone Gossard, we all know what the first question is going to be.

Mark, Friday, 5 June 2009 02:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Is it Baby D, Slammin Cadillac Doors?

dad a, Friday, 5 June 2009 02:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Nope.
It really did sound like an Outkast track, not bassy at all.
I can actually sing the song in my head and it sounds like Sleepy Brown is singing. The cadence for the chorus is:

Everythang is Everythang
It's all good
In my drop top Fleetwood
Rollin' through the hood
Everythang is Everythang
(garbled garbled), it ain't
Nothin' but a chicken wang
Shawty do ya thang

I mean, I couldn't very well have made that up can I? I remember googling five years ago to find out what the fuck a drop top fleetwood was, cuz I don't know car culture so I don't think I would guess my way to that. Maybe I dreamed it.

Don't be too sure.

A while ago, I dimly remembered a Dylan style take off of "Ilkley Moore baht at", but all I could find was Bill Oddie's version which was a take on Joe Cocker's style. About a month later I remembered. It was me, one drunken evening...

Find Stone's email address (or info@pearljam dot com or something) and ask him? Promise to donate $50 to one of his charities if he answers?

StanM, Friday, 5 June 2009 14:50 (fourteen years ago) link

OK, live performance on TV with someone from Pearl Jam on or near the stage: does this 1992 Lollapalooza lineup help?

Main Stage: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Ice Cube, Soundgarden, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pearl Jam, Lush

Side Stage: Jim Rose Circus, Sharkbait, Archie Bell, Porno for Pyros, Basehead, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, Sweaty Nipples, Arson Garden, Seaweed, Seam, Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E., The Look People, Stone Temple Pilots, The Vulgar Boatmen, Truly, Skrew, Tribe, The Authority, Samba Hell, Café Tacuba, Rage Against the Machine

StanM, Friday, 5 June 2009 14:56 (fourteen years ago) link

no, it was on MTV in the early 90's; in-studio live show as i recall though I might be crazy. I guess Boo Yaa Tribe is a possibility?

Just to be sure: which one of these people was it? (you said bassist and Gossard upthread, but those are two different people)

http://www.earyago.com/sites/dmeyer/_files/Image/pearl%20jam.jpg (big pic)

(first three: Stone Gossard (glasses), Mike McCready (used to be blond and a lot heavier, has some kind of bowel thing), Jeff Ament (sometimes seen with goatee, hat) )

hugging used to mean something (call all destroyer), Friday, 5 June 2009 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link

It was a one time watch over 15 years ago; I remember it being Stone, but I'm honestly not sure. Might be a false part of the memory, might by Ament. Mostly I remember the song.

pending echeques (forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 June 2009 17:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Not your answer, but it's clear that Gossard loves being the rap king of Seattle.

http://www.fivehorizons.com/archive/articles/gp0794.shtml

Q: Steve, you've played with a lot of different people. What's the key to working with different personalities?

STEVE: I like to think I'm versatile enough to mix into any situation. I should be able to, I've had enough training.[Laughs.] I've played behind all different types of male and female singers and groups. I've gone from one extreme of playing jungles with 50-piece orchestra to doing Booker T. & The MG's with three other guys. I'm a very commercial guy, I love to listen to the radio. This Ace Of Base is driving me crazy. I can listen to it all day long.

STONE: You're not into the new Snoop Doggy Dogg, though?

STEVE:[Frowns.] I don't think so.

STONE: "Gin And Juice," the baddest groove in years. Lately I don't listen to rap that much but I did when NWA, Public Enemy, and Ice Cube came out. That's probably where I got my funk grooves... My playing is either second generation via Jimmy Page ripping off black artists, or it's rap grooves that are sampled from the '70's and '60's.

The first time I ever heard Outkast was when Stone Gossard played "Ain't No Thang" on the radio when I was 14.

"Alright. That was - that was Weapon of Choice and they're out on Loosegroove records, which is a label I'm starting here in Seattle. And right now we're gonna listen to something else - we're gonna be playing some more Loosegroove stuff later in the night - but right now I really feel like we need to go to Atlanta and play some Outkast. This one goes out to Dirk and Lonnie. See ya."

I know I might be late but I too have been trying to figure out who sings that song for almost the past 10 years. I first heard the song maybe my sophomore or junior year in high school. It went like "Anything you wanna do, it's all good ridin drop top fleetwood thru the hood, everything is everything....(something,something) nothing but a chicken wing, shorty do your thang". To me it sounded like Jazzy Phae was on the track singing that hook. So I too would like to know & I'm a big music head...been that way since birth. But um yeah the hook keeps playing very clear in my head & it does sound like a down south song similar to Tela's "Bring em out" song.
