At No. 1 on Digital Songs, Bruno Mars' "Grenade" sells 559,000 downloads (up 164%) -- the third biggest sales week for a digital song in history. Right behind him this week at No. 2 is Katy Perry's "Firework" with 509,000 (up 165%) -- the fourth largest frame ever.

really happy about wiz finally breaking the top 10

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:05 (thirteen years ago) link

i have no beef with "grenade"

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:06 (thirteen years ago) link

but like oh hey, a rap song that is actually a rap song in the top 10. never thought i'd see that.

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess "6 foot 7 foot" was in the top ten last week. that's good too.

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:08 (thirteen years ago) link

but it doesn't feel like nearly as much of a huge hit as b&y does

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:09 (thirteen years ago) link

i thought it was called 6'7" but i'm seeing it listed as six foot seven foot everywhere, which kind of makes no sense

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:10 (thirteen years ago) link

the sample goes "6 foot, 7 foot, 8 foot, hut"

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:12 (thirteen years ago) link

i feel like "bottoms up" hasn't dipped below #11 for two months or something

a snooki and a killer (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:12 (thirteen years ago) link

def happy for wiz

a snooki and a killer (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:13 (thirteen years ago) link

the sample goes "6 foot, 7 foot, 8 foot, hut"

ha i can't even remember how it goes. haven't listened since that first underwhelming time.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:14 (thirteen years ago) link

and you're probably seeing it called that because that's what it's called.

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:15 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, "bottoms up" feels like it's been huge but really has just kinda been hanging there

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:16 (thirteen years ago) link

the first single cover probably threw some ppl off

a snooki and a killer (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:29 (thirteen years ago) link

ah, hadn't seen that

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:30 (thirteen years ago) link

it's sort of minor i guess but i like that it's called "six foot seven foot" instead of "6' 7"" -- the former sort of leans more on wayne's lovable playful side as opposed to generic swagger stuff

lol @ finally -- a rap song with no R&B singer by a rapper who's never had a major chart hit before rising to the top 10 about two months after the song's release is pretty damn fast.

hann am0n tana (some dude), Thursday, 30 December 2010 14:32 (thirteen years ago) link

it had been hanging just outside the top 10 for 2 or 3 weeks.

LEX: Chery Lloyd signed to Roc Nation!

the nutwasher (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 30 December 2010 14:38 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah just saw! hoping it's true, there are always so many rumours doing the rounds about x factor contestants and roc nation would have had to buy her out of the syco deal :/

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 30 December 2010 15:02 (thirteen years ago) link

will.i.am tweeted that he'd recorded a song with cher while he was in london, too

Yeah, Jordan, and others who commented, very much welcome with any contribution at all over at the dedicated k thread.

i don't see the two or so rap songs getting plays from pop stations as being a new renaissance for the genre or anything though -- rap still has an audience and might be integrated with the current aesthetic but i doubt it'll ever again be the driving force it was in the 00s

chilli, Friday, 31 December 2010 01:38 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't think anyone claimed that?

The Reverend, Friday, 31 December 2010 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link

just saying, it seems to be a popular sentiment among the fratboy demographic that wiz and kid cudi are part of a "new movement" in rap which i don't think will manifest itself in any real sense
